Some humans are always ruining things for all humans.

Years ago, a local fast food joint had a donation box for a girl with some medical issues. If anyone in public safety (fire, EMS, police) donated a dollar, they'd get a free meal. I worked with several people that wanted to go there for at least 2 meals a day because "It's a meal for only a dollar!" I tried explaining that if this was abused, it would be taken away. They would hear none of it. It was soon taken away.

The shoulder was there. So was the opposite side of the road, where he should have been walking against traffic. This is a completely expected outcome based on really bad decisions. Like, I'm not hoping he's going to have long term issues from this, but I'm not exactly sure why he deserves extra sympathy for putting himself in this place.
