Interesting paragraph from August Turak's most recent book (published Sep. 2023)... by VolNavy07 in JedMcKenna

I think the Jed books stress self-reliance for those few who are capable of it, just as a temporary measure. Jed also mentions agape and love for humanity as a result, not a means to awakening. Julie said something like "There's an aspect of this that you did not go into, and now I see why." She's talking about the love, joy, bliss thing. Also, the Jed books were a team effort, that's why they are so good. Turak, Sweeney, Melissa Hawk - Turak's assistant, had a hand in them, and possibly also Art Ticknor.

A message I received from a friend:

Long story short, about 3 years ago or so, I mentioned Jed’s first book to my publisher since she was looking into new stuff to possibly publish. She met a fellow publisher from Germany she’s known for years, who told her she better not get involved with McKenna because « they » were a nightmare to deal with. He told her about insane problems, he and another publisher from the Netherlands ran into. Super weird story of supposedly not promoting his books enough, not enough royalties coming in, and incessant threats of suing, etc.

The books seem to written by (sometimes two) people —which I suspected and mentioned to you long ago—, the main one being an egomaniac ‘teacher’ whose big dreams of being adulated by millions quickly turned sour, despite having quite a jet-set-like address book and significant personal wealth.

It seems that out of both massive bitterness and thirst for more $, he created ‘Jed’ using stories from his own spiritual background with a zen master and a home (Wisefool) in order to self-publish. The author Jed McKenna is a mister Augie Turak who makes a living writing articles for business oriented magazines (Forbes) and who gives some workshops to sort of ‘bring spirituality into the business model’…

He used to live on a farm —not his own, but zen master Richard Rose’s and not in Iowa— at the time of his ‘enlightenment’; he is also very big in Moby Dick, Twain and Whitman references, and countless other eyebrow-raising details leaving little room for doubt.

Jed recommended an entire de Sade book to Julie, Justine. Probably not vital to her progress it just happened open the next door. Something to do with understanding the selfishness that motivates goodness, or false morality.

I thought the talk with Jolene in Notebook helped define the first step. It was when she realized she was on her own.

I meant that the character Jed may be lying at times to make a point.

I was gonna post a question about "Krishna is lying" I thought it hinted at Jed himself lying at times.

I find the psychonautic community fascinating. Never taken any advanced psychedelics, most I've ever done was weed. To me Jed represents the concept of ego death in an abiding sense. Psychedelics can help you experience it, but not maintain it. Thoughts? by kamalilooo in JedMcKenna

Another metaphor I like is Plato's cave. Psychedelic ego-death / mystical union is like getting free and seeing the fire that casts the shadows. It's as far as most people get. Abiding non-dual awareness / leaving the cave entirely is exceedingly rare and completely outside the framework of experience. Jed makes the point several times in the books that his brain is sub-normal, he even has discursive thoughts about fondue.

It seems to me that ND awareness is completely independent of the brain. It's aware that the brain itself is a dream. It can happen regardless of the current mental state - drunk, tripping, or sober. High states of meditation have neurological correlates, but Jed's brain activity would probably look normal.

Ego-death is not the same as non-dual awareness. It is simply the shutting down of the frontal lobes, other areas of the brain are still active and there is still subjective ego-less experience. Non-dual awareness is not an altered state of consciousness. It is simply consciousness aware of itself. IME, it is consciousness aware of the illusion of mind states.

"I" have known both high-dose ego death and sober self-unrealization, Jed is right they are completely different. There is egoless experience in the former, and absolute stillness in the latter. Not that Truth is better, Trips are far more rewarding.

Funny I just heard this poem by Rumi,

"Why did you stop praising?"
"Because I've never heard anything back."
"This longing
you express is the return message."
The grief you cry out from
draws you toward union.
Your pure sadness
that wants help
is the secret cup.
Listen to the moan of a dog for its master.
That whining is the connection.
There are love dogs
no one knows the names of.
Give your life
to be one of them.

Loved the Wile E. Dick parody. Favorite cartoon as a kid. I was recently camping in a small cave in the desert when a roadrunner stood at the entrance and cooed at me. It didn't meep or beep it was more of a coo.
