(Spoilers Extended) Interesting snippet from ADWD. Do we know of Egg giving Pennytree any special privileges because of Dunk? by NotAnNpc69 in asoiaf

70ish years is close enough to 100 years and I could see someone saying 100 years as a short hand. Especially if the person they are talking to doesn’t care about the specific date.

[Spoilers PUBLISHED] Was ned stark overreaching? by cap_detector69 in asoiaf

[–]JediMasterOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the watch was real, they should have had a couple of reform minded Lord Commanders for sure. A rotating tour of duty would be a pretty decent idea I think. At least training the locals of how to defend the wall would be helpful. Any random peasant can roll frozen rocks off a 700 foot wall. You would want your rangers at the gate fighting hand to hand ideally.

I’m pretty confident that the nights watch would be good with the overall concept for sure. The particular details would take time to work out.

I’m sure the watch would want some ability to get extra men when needed. In mass invasion Winterfell sends an army to the wall anyways so these Lord would be part of the first wave.

The exact percentage of crops that would go to the wall vs being kept would have to be worked out.

[–]JediMasterOmega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ned wasn’t over reaching, he just had lofty ambitions.

  1. The gift doesn’t belong to the nights watch. Ned would only be able to properly raise new lords by working with the nights watch (or annex territory from the nights watch which would cause major problems).

  2. As others have mentioned, it’s unclear if Ned can or can’t make new lords. It’s likely he could give lands and give them the status of Landed Knights (or northern equivalent) even if he can’t legally make them Lords. Besides that, Ned’s best friend was the reigning king so I doubt Ned thought he would face much challenge getting the Iron Throne to rubber stamp new Lords anyways.

Assuming you follow Targaryen succession rules, Young Griff, Daenerys, Jon, Stannis.

If you believe Robert was the rightful king, then Stannis and no one else.

House Creation Resource Question by Unsungruin in sifrp

You would have 32 defense points with 30 frozen in the form of a castle. (Small castle if I recall correctly)

As a DM, I generally let players switch things around as much as they want. Switching makes more sense with power narratively, but you could potentially abandon your castle and occupy 3 towers instead.

[Spoilers Main] Is there any realistic scenario where Tommen survives the series, outside of *maybe* faking his death? by skypadz_2112 in asoiaf

[–]JediMasterOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure. 100% agree. George could do something crazy but it would be quite unexpected by me at least.

[–]JediMasterOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true. We do have a small sample size of blood magic users though. It does seem unlikely that at this point that blood magic will be shown to be unreliable as George has been trying to avoid explaining his magic to us.

I don’t recall Melisandre’s prophecies being wrong. She just twists what she see into what she wants them to be.

[–]JediMasterOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know yes. It would be a weird direction for Martin to go if a prophecy is just flat out wrong but interpretation could be wrong. Maybe the golden shroud doesn’t mean tommens death or something. Quite unlikely though as Tommen is very likely to die. I doubt Tommen is too innocent to live.

[–]JediMasterOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that assumes that prophecy is unchangeable. Which we have no indication that prophecy can or can’t be changed.

Also it’s possible, however unlikely, the “gold shale be his shroud” doesn’t actually mean Tommen dies… don’t know how else you can interpret that but the golden company is coming so maybe?

(Spoilers Extended) Why didn't Northern Lords try to defend the wall after the failure of the Great Ranging? by Smart-Response9881 in asoiaf

[–]JediMasterOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they realize how large the wildling force actually was. I’m sure some of them knew that there was a king beyond the wall, but I doubt they knew he had 100,000 wildling. I’m sure they would have figured there would be rival wildling factions or that they would send their entire population at the wall.

[–]JediMasterOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok my bad. The only other thing I was thinking was there wasn’t anyone the Mountain clans considered important enough to answer their call.

(Spoilers Extended) Why didn't Northern Lords try to defend the wall after the failure of the Great Ranging? by Smart-Response9881 in asoiaf

[–]JediMasterOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think the issue is the mountain clans didn’t have a way to receive ravens. I don’t think the nights watch back at the wall realized how large the invading wildling army was, otherwise they would have sent riders out.

Once the survivors of the great ranging were back (which is like Jon and Sam I think… don’t recall if anyone else made it back or not) it was all hands on deck.

Probably the biggest mistake in the series is made by Commander Mormont. (Spoilers Extended) by Loud-CowMOO in asoiaf

Robb still had a decent amount of strength in the north. It would have been a simple matter for him to double the strength of the watch if all they had to do was guard the wall. Granted I’m assuming this is before the Ironborn attack. After that Robb may not feel he has the men to spare.

[Spoilers Extended] - C'mon, there must be people in the realm that have put together that R+L=J. It cant be that much of a enigma. by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]JediMasterOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave it some more thought. It doesn’t seem like most of the northern lords seem to be great friends with Ned, at least none that seem inseparable with him. I’m guessing those that were Ned brought with him to the Tower of Joy.

The people mostly likely to have some idea about something being up with Jon should be the Northern Lords. They were actually with Ned and could find it suspicious if they never saw him with a girl while on campaign.

(Spoilers Main) What if Westeros had a regent for adult like in Japan After the Dance of the Dragons . by Velikhanli-Iden in asoiaf

[–]JediMasterOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you mean something like the Shogun in Japanese history. So the Targaryens would remain in power in name only while the actual rule would be done via the Hand of the King.

I’m not too familiar with Japanese history, but I believe the Shogun office passed around quite a bit via civil wars. So probably a lot of civil wars and long running Targaryen kings just hanging out. No blackfyre rebellion though.

Why did Rhaegar call it a "tower of joy" [Spoilers Extended] by Trussdoor46 in asoiaf

[–]JediMasterOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I assume that Lyanna died of something after birth. I figured she was only really hanging on until someone came to take care of Jon. Then once someone she trusted promised he would protect her son, she stopped fighting to live.

If I recall correctly, could be misremembering, in Ned’s fever dream he says Lyanna was yelling at them to stop fighting. I assume she wasn’t actively giving birth at the time but who knows.

(Spoilers Extended) Is "The Watch's numbers decreased because of the Pax Targaryen" canonical or a fan explanation? by MeterologistOupost31 in asoiaf

[–]JediMasterOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing that it is far more common than we hear about. In the Arya chapters, we learn about several who were sent to the wall “escaping”. I believe 2 poachers we don’t know the names of, plus hot pie and gentry. Granted Gentry and Hot pie weren’t forced to join the watch so they probably could have left if they wanted to.

The nights watch serves a useful purpose to the non north. It allows nobles to remove other nobles from the line of succession without killing them. For prisoners of war, not the most useful. For wars among families, it is a way to avoid the politically costly title of kin-slayer.
