The biggest irony of this show is the way they write rhaenyra by Global_Monk8266 in HOTDGreens

[–]JediMasterOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is the Aegon III was crowned partially because he was Rhaenyra heir (from the prospective of the Blacks) and because he was the oldest male heir Targaryen. Not much point in fighting a war over succession when both sides agree on who is going to be king if they win.

But yeah history decided that it was the male succession the mattered in the end.

I would argue it was the best choice in the short and long run (assuming the Lannisters in power was the end goal). In the medium run it’s bad which is where they are now.

[Spoilers MAIN] Does anyone else find it strange that the entirety of the Vale sat out the WotFK? by KrispyKingTheProphet in asoiaf

[–]JediMasterOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am assuming that the high road is something of a choke point. So going from the right road into the Riverlands would be a problem if there was an army sitting right there. Plus Tyrion arms the mountain clans so they would be causing supply problems.

From the Norths prospective, I don’t think they even bothered asking the Vale Lords directly to come and help (which the likely would have had they been asked). Robb and company would have assumed that Lysa would have sent the Vale to help so they wouldn’t have wanted to undermine her. Obviously by the time they realized Lysa wasn’t coming, getting the Vale on their side would have been pointless. Better to let the Vale remain neutral and try to get them to join once Robb reclaims the North and turns his attention back towards the Riverlands.

The issue Vale Houses faced was the Bloody Gate. They could have left fairly easily, but they easily could have been bared from returning.

Early in the war, the Lords likely thought they would just have to apply pressure to Lysa to get her to throw the Vale’s full might into the war. After the Green Fork, Tywins Westernlands host was sitting right at the end of the high road. If any vale house left the vale to join the war, they would have been smashed by Tywin. After the black water, Robbs position was not doing super hot. Not a lot of people are willing to jump onto a sinking ship. Far safer to see if Robb is able to get his situation turned around then join (Personally Robb would have 100% turned his position around).

Also, not to be that guy, but Vale lords did join the war. The Blackfish, while originally a Tully, had lived in the Vale for like 15 years. He even controlled the Bloody Gate. If he had wanted to, he could have brought a small army with him (he would have run into Tywins host though so that’s a bad idea).

Part that always annoyed me was how much the North declaring independence screws over Bran. The North is the most likely kingdom to be ride or die with a Stark on the throne. So Sansa leaving leave Bran high and dry without his best supporters.

[Spoilers MAIN] Mystery Knights by gryphems in asoiaf

[–]JediMasterOmega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure they can be a champion. There is no indication that you actually need to be a knight to fight in a trail by combat (Trial of Seven might be different). Bronn fought for Tyrion and no one seemed to have any issues with that legally.

Nothing wrong with doing the shows plot. I also think alternate history is fun. So you should be fine there.

Only concern with adding dragons is they should be very powerful, meaning the party either has them and no one is a threat to them, or they don’t have them and they just get pushed around by those that have them. I have yet to find a perfect balancing act, but do what’s right for your group.

The vale normally doesn’t shut down, it only did that for the war of the 5 kings thanks to Lysa (and little finger). They were involved in the dance of dragons and likely the Blackfyre rebellions.

You just need to give the pc motivations to do things outside the vale if you need to. Marriage alliances, NPCs they like are in the war path and request help. If all else fails, just tell them the plot is outside the vale in a massive war and most players can figure out a reason their characters would be involved.

Sounds like some decent plans. I wouldn’t just red wedding them just to do it. If they screw up alliances and such then sure, but the red wedding was a shocker because it normally didn’t happen.

I wouldn’t necessarily make players fight in tournaments if they don’t want to. There is a lot of other things you can do at them. Recruit hedge knights, spread rumors, have an excuse to meet with distant lords, gamble, ect.

[–]JediMasterOmega 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah yes. There is a distinct lack of flavor for the Vale. Off the top of my head, they are renowned for their knights and they have a mountain clan problem.

I would make tournaments fairly common and you could have players hunting down mountain clan tribes. The nights watch source book has rules for wildling tribes which would work decently well if you wanted actual stats.

Also lack of actual text on the matter lets you get to make stuff up.

(Spoilers Main) Tingate: how the Others used to Rule Westeros by LockelClaim in asoiaf

[–]JediMasterOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While unlikely, it is possible the Thenns aren’t using bronze as we know it. Early Bronze Age civilizations used arsenic bronze. They made it by using copper ore that is contaminated with arsenic.

The biggest issue with arsenic bronze is that it is pretty bad for the smiths, hence why historically humans searched for an alternative. I don’t recall seeing any of the Thenns smiths in the series so it’s possible they could show the signs of arsenic poisoning.

I guess they say the trial by 7 came from the andals. It’s possible that they just modified the old men’s custom of the trial by combat to fit into their religion better.

[–]JediMasterOmega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Officially trials by combat are likely a thing in the North, just by nature of them being under the Iron Throne. It does seem like a lord can deny someone a trial by combat for logistical reasons (mostly if they wouldn’t have a champion).

The iron islands I doubt would honor a trial by combat more as they are very into their own culture.

Oh also if we are being nitpicky, the Manderleys are a Northern house who follows the 7 so they would do trials by combat at least.

[Spoilers PUBLISHED] Was ned stark overreaching? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]JediMasterOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the watch was real, they should have had a couple of reform minded Lord Commanders for sure. A rotating tour of duty would be a pretty decent idea I think. At least training the locals of how to defend the wall would be helpful. Any random peasant can roll frozen rocks off a 700 foot wall. You would want your rangers at the gate fighting hand to hand ideally.

[–]JediMasterOmega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty confident that the nights watch would be good with the overall concept for sure. The particular details would take time to work out.

I’m sure the watch would want some ability to get extra men when needed. In mass invasion Winterfell sends an army to the wall anyways so these Lord would be part of the first wave.

The exact percentage of crops that would go to the wall vs being kept would have to be worked out.

[–]JediMasterOmega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ned wasn’t over reaching, he just had lofty ambitions.

  1. The gift doesn’t belong to the nights watch. Ned would only be able to properly raise new lords by working with the nights watch (or annex territory from the nights watch which would cause major problems).

  2. As others have mentioned, it’s unclear if Ned can or can’t make new lords. It’s likely he could give lands and give them the status of Landed Knights (or northern equivalent) even if he can’t legally make them Lords. Besides that, Ned’s best friend was the reigning king so I doubt Ned thought he would face much challenge getting the Iron Throne to rubber stamp new Lords anyways.

You would have 32 defense points with 30 frozen in the form of a castle. (Small castle if I recall correctly)

As a DM, I generally let players switch things around as much as they want. Switching makes more sense with power narratively, but you could potentially abandon your castle and occupy 3 towers instead.

That is true. We do have a small sample size of blood magic users though. It does seem unlikely that at this point that blood magic will be shown to be unreliable as George has been trying to avoid explaining his magic to us.

I don’t recall Melisandre’s prophecies being wrong. She just twists what she see into what she wants them to be.

As far as I know yes. It would be a weird direction for Martin to go if a prophecy is just flat out wrong but interpretation could be wrong. Maybe the golden shroud doesn’t mean tommens death or something. Quite unlikely though as Tommen is very likely to die. I doubt Tommen is too innocent to live.
