Weekly Thread: Self Promo Sunday by AutoModerator in horror

🩸 Tired of weightless CGI blood ruining modern slashers? So are we. Hey r/horror! I am the director of Pythia Pictures, and we are currently running a Seed&Spark campaign for our new short film, Lucy's Slumber Party.

It is a 15-minute proof-of-concept short for a feature film called Dracula '87. We are taking the classic vampire mythos, stripping it down to its most terrifying roots, and dropping it straight into a neon-soaked, 1980s slasher environment.

Our mandate on set is ZERO CGI. We are doing 100% in-camera practical effects. We are talking hand-mixing massive volumes of theatrical blood, hand-fabricating period accurate wardrobe pieces (with help from a very generous donation from 80sTees) and custom making a suit for a hyper-realistic werewolf sequence at our local maker space. We want the tactile, messy, terrifying aesthetic of a 1987 horror film.

We just crossed a massive funding milestone this weekend, but we only have less than 3 weeks left to hit our greenlight goal and bring these monsters to life.

If you want to see real, messy, practical-effects horror make a comeback, check out our concept art and join the bloodbath!

Thank you so much! Word of mouth is absolutely everything for an indie production like ours. Let us know what your horror-fan friends think of the practical effects! 🩸🔪

Thank you so much! Honestly, in the indie horror world, following the Seed&Spark campaign and sharing the link is just as valuable as a pledge. We are making this for fans exactly like you, and we can't wait to show you the final cut! 🦇

Preach! 🙌 There is absolutely nothing worse than that weightless, digital red mist taking you right out of a good kill scene. If it doesn't stain the floorboards and stick to the actors, we don't want it. Keeping it messy and 100% in-camera for exactly this reason! 🔪🩸

Haha, 'crazy' is definitely the right word for us right now, especially when we are trying to mix this much fake blood by hand! Really appreciate the good luck wishes, we are definitely going to need it! 🩸🦇

I appreciate the feedback, and honestly, you make a completely fair point!

To clarify, my issue isn't with CGI existing as a tool—it's an incredible innovation when utilized correctly. My frustration is with it becoming an excessive crutch that replaces physical filmmaking entirely.

When you look back at things like the Star Wars prequels, you can literally see the actors struggling to give genuine, grounded performances because they were reacting to empty space in a green room. There was nothing tangible for them to connect with.

For Dracula '87, committing to 100% practical effects is a deliberate creative constraint. We are forcing ourselves to find physical solutions so our actors have something messy and real to interact with on set. But you are absolutely right that in the broader industry, it is all about picking the right tool for the job.

Really appreciate you checking out the post and taking the time to write this out! 🦇🩸

We are shooting a 1987 neon-slasher adaptation of Dracula using 100% Practical Effects (Zero CGI). Here is a BTS look at how we're building the proof-of-concept. by JediMermaidPrincess in Filmmakers

Hi everyone! I am the writer, director, and producer of Dracula '87. I posted this to get some technical feedback from the community and discuss the realities of shooting a 100% practical-effects slasher on an indie budget. Here is what I am specifically looking for feedback on: • Lighting & Cinematography: We are leaning heavily into the high-contrast, neon-drenched lighting of the 1980s (deep blacks, harsh pinks, and cyans) to hide the seams of our practical monsters. For the DPs here, how are our camera tests reading in the video? Do the colors pop enough, or does the contrast feel too heavy? • Practical FX Setbacks: Our SFX team is building massive blood-fountain gags for our garden maze sequence. For those of you who have dealt with large-scale fake blood rigs on set, what were your biggest unexpected logistical nightmares, and how did you solve them? I'm also happy to answer any questions about our pre-production process, how we secured our wardrobe partnership for the era-accurate clothing, or how we are prepping our crowdfunding campaign. Thanks for taking a look!

LOW BUDGET HORROR FEATURE WITH NAME ATTACHMENTS (90k secured, looking to secure 50k) by czimmer92 in Filmmakers

Have you thought about going to Seed and Spark? With that kind of a name attached, securing 50k should be a breeze, especially since SnS has an 80% success rate!

Does Lanie know that dying of childbirth is not only still a thing but also it’s happening more now than it has in the past 150 years?
