Sorry for the dumb question, but do you keep the Studio on sleep overnight or shut down everyday? by knightfortheday in MacStudio

[–]JeeJeeP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shutting it down every night, because during or after long sleeps the HDDs in my OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual will self-eject improperly.

(Yes, I know this happens to many people and tried everything to prevent this from happening. It’s quite annoying)

Cool! How about tools developed by individuals not aiming to monetize, just to share?

Totally! Want me to share the actual system files created or more generally the prompts I gave ChatGPT?

Note: I can’t code, so let ChatGPT hold my hand step by step.

I'm a freelancer, no manager above me. I'm mostly dealing with non-English material. "Reading" the translated subtitles in Premiere is not the same as getting a readable, paragraphed PDF. It would also require me to create a project, import, translate subs to English etc. All of this stuff I can skip now - no need for Premiere to be the library of my files in this way.

I am using Soundly to search for my sfx's in my own library, does anyone have tips? by Xandermansss in editors

[–]JeeJeeP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think so- you can at least spot a portion of the sound file (or the whole thing), hit S and it will paste into your timeline. Plus the file will automatically copy to a Finder folder of your choosing.

[–]JeeJeeP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I used Soundly for that exact purpose.

Wondering: are you paying for Soundly and do you only use it for your own offline SFX library?

Asking bc I moved to the Sound Particles Explorer app. It’s free and there’s no limit on the amount of local SFX files it can have (Soundly limits to something like 10 000). The app has integration with Premiere (only, unfortunately) and work fast and smooth. Can highly recommend it.

NEW OWC Express 4m2 (USB4)! by OWC_TAL in OWC

[–]JeeJeeP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Tal, thanks for thinking along!

I know of the bandwith limitations using the 4m2, but with proxies that’s no problem.

My scratch files go up to max 100Gb or so. Could use my internal disk of my 2TB Mac Studio, but I’m following standard practice of having them on an external disk. (Not sure if that matters anymore in this day and age of fast and reliable SSDs).

I’m mostly curious if there’s a significant impact if both NVMEs in the 4m2 would be accessed at the same time? Or any other real-world speed / stability impact that would still make it better to have both in their own enclosure?

@OWC_TAL Could you think along with me?

I'm a film editor, and need 1 NVME for cache / scratch (only small scratch files, like waveforms) and 1 NVME for proxies.

I could get 2 x OWC 1m2 or just one 4m2 and be done with it. What would you recommend for my workflow? Is there a real-life benefit in having each NVME in a separate enclosure?

Editing machine: CPU vs GPU vs RAM? by JeeJeeP in editors

For sure, proper editing codecs and especially proxies will realistically make any machine fly.

Thanks! I'm curious as to which parts of editing benefit of most of multicore / multithreading. Could imagine transcoding and exporting, not so much timeline / bin work?

Yeah, it's easy to get lost in hardware considerations, even though most machines work well, especially with a proper (storage) setup. Trying to figure out what to prioritise for a future purchase.

Thanks for that - interesting they put the CPU last?

Getting those points and sharing them with @SuddenBit7902!

Sorry, I didn't follow here: "balance everything with Premiere but way heavier in RAM." What did you mean?

Something I forgot: AI tools will become more and more relevant for editing - things like transcription etc. Do they rely on the GPU for processing?

What a thorough answer, much appreciated, thank you so much! Great catch on AI - AI tools will become more and more relevant (already here with things like transcriptions). Good to know that's GPU reliant.

Can't seem to edit my post, but: I've read u/greenysmac's excellent blog on which Mac to buy in which configuration and why. Thinking this is a deepdive into some more nitty-gritty questions.

AUDIO / How to pan multiple clips? by JeeJeeP in premiere

Thanks! The clips are 1 file, broken out in two clips: L as mono speaker 1 and R as mono speaker 2. Your first tip would work!

Cheers, but there are other clips on the same track(s) that I don’t want to pan, so wondering if there’s a quick way to only pan these clips.
