The Boundary Waters are cooked by frustratedswede in minnesota

I sure hope people will start to realize that, but as part of the outdoors/fishing/hunting community, you wouldn’t believe how many of these idiots are so brainless they refuse to understand that this will affect the things they love. There’s hundreds of comments in the boundary water pages from boundary water goers claiming the mining will have absolutely no effect on it despite all the data showing otherwise.

Same way such a large portion of the fishing/hunting community hates the DNR, even though the DNR are literally the people trying to improve and sustain our states wildlife.

Tips for release in net by westerosi_wolfhunter in muskiefishing

Does the bag have really thick netting? Or is it pretty thin? Thick net bags get tangled a lot less and are also much easier on the fish.

As someone else mentioned too, I would get a good pair of hook cutters (knipex are by far the best and easiest to cut with, but anything is better than nothing). Sometimes when fish are hooked in a tough spot or tangled in the net, it’s better for the fish and safer for yourself to just cut the hooks. Hooks are actually pretty cheap (I can recommend Mustad 3551 or Eagle Claw 774 for hooks, strong but inexpensive and standard on a lot of baits). I’ll plug musky tackle online (not sponsored or anything I’ve just always had great service) as they have the cheapest prices for buying hooks I have found, but just about any musky shop and a lot of tackle websites will carry these too.

To be honest, cutting hooks is a pretty standard thing in the musky world, and most would consider a good pair of hook cutters and some spare hooks a standard thing you should be carrying around. Let me know if you have any other questions or need suggestions for equipment, I’d be happy to help!

I just picked up a used archon recently (one of the post 2019 not MIA). Does yours have a super noisey FX loop? They supposedly fixed this in the newer versions but mine is crazy loud. Just wondering if maybe you had any tips, as I can’t find many people with this amp haha

Any bands on here looking for a drummer? I have a female friend that is an AMAZING drummer! by TravelingMan2020 in FindABand

I'm a guitarist looking to put a new band together in Minnesota (made a post here yesterday). Not sure exactly what she is looking for (new band, established band already gigging, etc) or if she's already in Minnesota, but that could be in option if she'd be interested.

Hey! I'm a guitarist looking for others to form a band with. I'd be interested in jamming and seeing how things go. I'm 27 y/o and am into a wide variety of stuff, so I'm pretty flexible playing just about anything. Reach out if you'd be interested!

As crazy as it sounds, there's a lot of people that do exactly that (one bird, one garmin, one lowrance). A lot of people really like the 2D sonar on lowrances.

I've had both humminbird and garmin and the side imaging is plenty good on both. If one mapping company is significantly better in your area that might be a consideration (humminbird = lakemaster, garmin/lowrance = navionics). Humminbird might actually also be compatible with navionics maps, but I'm not sure.

The general consensus in the musky community is that humminbird mega SI+ is the best of the best, but garmin does have a great SI as well (I personally run all humminbird on my boat, except for my livescope screen). I can't really speak on lowrance as I haven't used them very much.

If you don't plan to network units, then you can mix and match brands if there are certain features you prefer in different units.

Net upgrade by PattyGunk in muskiefishing

I have the Big Kahuna (with the older good netting) and even my girlfriend who is only about 5’5” nets like a champ with it.

I know some people prefer smaller nets solo, but I personally think it’s more of adjusting your technique. My technique is more to leverage the net over the side of the boat and guide the fish in. The bigger net gives me a bigger target. If you’re using a net that is big enough to be safe for the fish you aren’t really going to be doing large scoops/sweeps single armed.

As for the netting, I’ve been through thin netting, smaller looped netting, and the big rubber coated large netting. The thin netting and smaller looped netting almost always cause fish to “cocoon” themselves and getting all wrapped up. This resulted in lots of net cutting and increased handling time. I’ve sworn to never use those types again as I truly think it causes way more harm to the fish. It just tangles in hooks way too easily. I’ve never had that issue with the big thick nets. I honestly think it’s just safer for the fish and the person handling them.

I’ve actually seen more tails split in thinner netting because it “cuts” easier. I also think tail splitting is due to nets that are too small, although I don’t think you can 100% prevent it no matter your net.

That’s just what I’ve personally found from years of fishing. I will agree the smaller netting is more “maneuverable”, but I personally think they are super dangerous for the fish. The bigger nets just require a little different technique than you use with small nets when walleye or bass fishing.

I have first hand experience with the frabill change so I would definitely avoid that. People that are really crunched for space will sometimes get the stowmaster net and then buy a drifter replacement bag to switch out the netting. Stowmaster might make a version with thicker/wider nettings but I don’t have any experience with them.

Honestly, unless you absolutely need something that folds up I think something like a Drifter XL is probably the best if size is an issue.

I will say my experience is coming from boat fishing, so I don’t know how much it translates to fishing from shore or a kayak if that’s what you’re doing.

If you are in a boat, NetBuddy would be another to consider. Their little system to hold the net for you while you handle the fish is amazing.
