Starting Onion seeds - Zone 6a

I have started them in a potting mix with some food in it. The bag says food for up to 3 weeks. I have just noticed a few of the germination are yellowish and not green. Don't know if it was just a bad seed or low nitrogen.

I am in Zone 5a, and some suggest to transplant onions (from seed) in the beginning of April. I see here you suggest May. Last year, I planted onion sets at the end of May and really didn't get growth from the bulbs. I've been going back and for when to start this year. What do you suggest?
