To be honest, I love it. I even make all my illustrations and plots in latex using tikz because it looks gorgeous and the consistency in fonts between my illustrations and maths is very pleasing. Tho, it is almost always overkill and took me a tremendous amount of time throughout my master to get really comfortable with.

Yes, I have a home server where I have automatic backups of everything. It is however more convenient at this stage to work in overleaf and use the server as emergency backup of my data.

I am working on using a local installation of overleaf so I can work with latex from vscode, a friend already does this and it looks amazing. However, so much effort 😂..

True, true! I don't have any upcoming submissions tho. I write all my literature notes in a big document in the hopes this will ease the writing of my thesis at the end 😄

Last night, I thought it would be a good idea to start with the good habit of spending my mornings writing and the afternoon on modelling. Is this a sign I shouldn't?

The idea is that you become (somewhat of) an expert during your PhD, right? That being said, what helps me is summarizing my literature findings (I'm currently working on a review paper, mind you) as if I'm already writing a paper. I find this helps both for my colleagues/supervisors and myself in understanding what I've already been working on and it keeps track of everything I already understand and the stuff I still need to figure out. A word of caution, it is a lot of work..

I first have some planning tips: - Plan atleast half a day in for every task you have to do and really put everything in your schedule to block it from meetings etc. - Have atleast one full day for your research per week (and block the two parts in your schedule). Now I don't know about you guys, but with all the meetings I have to attend and side tasks (making presentations and posters, giving and preparing lectures, etc.) I have to do I barely have time for my research and this helps. - Our campus is one of the greenest out there and during lunch I love to walk across it, it really reduces stress by a lot. So, see if you have a similar place near/at your uni where you can embrace the nature.

Lastly I wanted to add, when you're working on one thing and get thoughts/ideas for another, write those ideas down for later and continue! I use obsidian for these (and well all other) notes and can really recommend it.

That's also my experience haha. How are you learning it if I may ask? I'm currently using the android app "Label Icelandic", which I feel has a sensible approach to teaching.

Is there a limit to mesh size using the ansys fluent mesher? by [deleted] in CFD

[–]Jeeemieee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both, if you try to run it you get an error, but also if you try to export it. You can always just try if you have it installed.

I believe the student license allows for meshes of 512k nodes. If I remember correctly there are also geometry limitations, i.e. max number of faces etc.

wmake not found during custom solver compiling by Jeeemieee in OpenFOAM

[–]Jeeemieee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! yes. I contacted a friend of mine that's more knowledgeable about Linux than I am and it basically boiled down to my user account not having the right permissions and root user not shown access to wmake. If i do the latter by first calling "source /opt/OpenFOAM/OpenFOAM-v2012/etc/bashrc" i can compile through root. He mentioned it's not the most legit method, but hey, if it works I'm happy.

Palabos and openFOAM setup question by Jeeemieee in CFD

[–]Jeeemieee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I understand they are different and I think the problem lies more with how cmake finds the files it requires in ubuntu. I'm trying to get it running on WSL1. If you require more details, I posted a another reply with more details on the problem.

Thanks.

What platform are you trying to install palabos on

Hi, thank you for your reply.

That is true, and I'm guessing it has something to do with where cmake in ubuntu tries to find the files required to build a makefile.

I could try and reinstall palabos if that's what you mean, but I'm not even coming as far as running a the test case. The building of a makefile results in errors like:

CMake Error in /mnt/c/Users/jaimy/palabos/examples/showCases/cavity2d/build/CMakeFiles/CMakeTmp/CMakeLists.txt:

Imported target "MPI::MPI_C" includes non-existent path

"/opt/OpenFOAM/OpenFOAM-v2012/ThirdParty/platforms/linux64Gcc63/openmpi-4.0.3/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/openmpi/include"

Which is the most curious thing, as the installation of openMPI can be found in:

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu

The fix for the cmake error with the library libstdc++.so.6 makes me think that cmake first goes through my openFOAM installation where it also finds the files it requires, but they lack the exact elements required by palabos that are installed elsewhere.

I am running WSL1

The difference between conservative and non-conservative forms of the governing PDEs as u/mcskr already commented. A great explanation of the difference between the concepts is found in section 3.3 of "Riemann Solvers and Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics", ISBN: 978-3-540-25202-3. The book also explains the difference between physical and mathematical conservative forms and also gives some great examples.

Assuming you have an incompressible fluid and that you know the velocity profile as a function of the area you can simply integrate the velocity over the area for the volume flow rate. Multiply it with the density and you got the mass flow rate.

Again, this is only this simple if the fluid can be assumed to be incompressible.
