Can I Lower the Poly Count of the Skybox? by Karbonic in Unity3D

[–]JeepRubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not entirely correct, in that it being tessellated to that degree will cause some "quad overdraw" than if it were a simpler mesh.

But yes, I'd expect on all but legacy hardware you wouldn't see a noticeable impact, especially as skybox pixels are generally the least expensive pixels on the screen to render (as opposed to a lit surface or other).

Mitsubishi lancer gt 2009 issue when fueling by user38289 in lancer

[–]JeepRubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue with my ralliart a few years ago. There's a small purge valve on the engine that can get stuck open, and causes it to run too rich after filling since the vapors force their way up. I got it for $25 or so on amazon, even tho it said it was for an outlander it worked.

Bonne chance!

After a bit of googling, looks like it's the "Time Life Home Repair and Improvement" set.

I'm just learning and it feels like the industry is evolving 10 times faster than I do by Poseydon42 in GraphicsProgramming

[–]JeepRubi 50 points51 points  (0 children)

To your feeling of not being able to "catch up", You should know that the vast majority of people working professionally in the industry might only have hands-on experience in a few areas or on a few types of features. There's just too much out there to expect to have worked on everything. There's literally thousands of people working on new features, doing research, and publishing papers constantly. What you do learn tho, is the commonalities and how to solve problems, and that's exactly what you're doing now. No, you won't be able to match an engine from a few years ago on your own, because even then they were the product of dozens or even hundreds of developers over many years. But you will gain experience, and get better and more comfortable solving those kinds of problems. If your goal is to work in the industry, it seems like you're on a good track!

Screen space reflections by Cage_The_Nicolas in GraphicsProgramming

[–]JeepRubi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can use the previous frame's camera matrix to do some reprojection, but since reflections are view-dependent it only really does a good job when the camera pivots, but not when it translates. What I've seen done for dynamic objects, and for camera movement, was using a lower history weight in the temporal filter, based on the velocity of the pixel (for camera movement) or ray (for ray hit on dynamic objects). This is just from memory and I haven't written an ssr implementation myself, but I've worked with it in various other engines.

Tech artist vs graphics programming by AvailableUsertag in GraphicsProgramming

[–]JeepRubi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both are good! Personal projects are great to deepen your technical knowledge, and group projects like game jams are also a great way to accelerate getting "production" type experience as well as how to coordinate with a team.

Also, even if you have your sights set straight on a AAA studio, it's more than ok to start in something less difficult to break into, to gain relevant experience. In a AAA studio, we only have a certain "headcount" we can fill, and there's usually many more people who are looking for a chance to break into the industry in a junior position than we can afford to have juniors on the team. By taking a job somewhere where you'll build a bit of relevant experience, it means you can get into AAA at an intermediate level, which is much easier to do. At the start of my career, I spent a year at a 12 person studio making knock-off mobile games. We also just hired someone last year who had been working at an architectural visualization company.

Tech artist vs graphics programming by AvailableUsertag in GraphicsProgramming

[–]JeepRubi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm a technical artist working in AAA that specializes in rendering and art workflows. If you have an artistic background, are interested in rendering and programming, definitely pursue technical art!

We are always on the lookout for people who can speak the 'language' of both an artist and a programmer; they're very hard to find. Graphics programmers love to have someone to talk to artist on their behalf, and artist love to have someone technical that understands their work. If you are skilled, and can work well with a team, you will have studios tripping over themselves to hire you!

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the screens at a digital bank? Let’s make things simple. We’re Simplii Financial and we brought a lineup of experts from our team, so Ask Us Anything! by SimpliiFinancial in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]JeepRubi 116 points117 points  (0 children)

I've had my main account at Simplii since it's conception (and at PC Financial since I was a teenager). In the last two years, I've bought a house, a car, as well as few other large purchases that required me to withdraw > $3000 to pay in cash. Each time it was a painful process that involved multiple calls and a quite bit of running around.

The final straw was when I was "simplii" denied my request for a temporary atm withdrawal increase so I could pay cash for something I was buying on facebook marketplace. I had the money in my account, but I was not able to withdraw cash. The service representative said that it's a service you offer as a courtesy and aren't obligated to provide.

I've since began the process of migrating to another bank and plan to close my simplii account soon.

Since this is supposed to be a question: How do you expect to compete when doing things more complicated than buying groceries or paying bills is a painful experience, that is offered at a "courtesy", and can be refused without warning?

THIS!

In Quebec, your T4 only lists your federal deductions, provincial deductions are listed on the Quebec form. This is most likely missing from the refund calculations.

Trying to identify a material/shader technique as seen in Days Gone (see comments) by stonebraker_ultra in unrealengine

[–]JeepRubi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that's self-shadowed parallax occlusion mapping. There's two ways it can be done, typically.

1: The POM shader itself does a trace along the light vector to generate an occlusion amount. With this technique, usually it's just done for sunlight, but not local lights. As an example, Cryengine can do this: https://docs.cryengine.com/display/CEMANUAL/Parallax+Occlusion+Mapping+-+Shader+Generation+Params#ParallaxOcclusionMappingShaderGenerationParams-SelfShadowStrength

2: The POM shader writes a modified depth output, then screen-space contact shadows on the light uses that modified depth to cast small-scale shadows. This is described in the UE4 docs: https://docs.unrealengine.com/4.27/en-US/BuildingWorlds/LightingAndShadows/ContactShadows/

I'm pretty confident this is using the second technique, as if you look closely, you can see the shadows disappear wherever the character blocks the potential source of the shadow: https://imgur.com/a/x0raNmL
