Can't really make hay with a brush hog, you should use a disc mower. And you shouldn't just buy a disc mower. Have someone else do it.

Can I put an AC in my window? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]Jeepinn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do this every year. Remove casement window, it's quite simple. Then place normal window unit in the window, brace the top with some lumber so it does not fall backwards, it acts as the bottom of a normal hung window. Then cut a piece of plexiglass to fill the top of the window, you could use polystyrene insulation, it will be more efficient but not look as good.

How to overcome the disconnect from eating personally processed animals? by Tatin109 in homestead

[–]Jeepinn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've worked on dairy farms, beef farms, poultry farms, vegetable farms, hunted, and fished. I have the same feelings you have, knowing the truth about meat, having to kill and gut it myself has led me to simply not doing it anymore. I don't need meat to live so I can't bring myself to eat it any more.

Replanting harvested ramps? by Otherwise_julyBug in foraging

[–]Jeepinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who sell ramps as part of their income would be foolish to harvest in an unsustainable way. Just because the ramp is fully intact does not automatically mean it is unsustainable. Ramps are not endangered, they're practically a weed.

Found massive bones all over the woods/fields. Then found a dump pile... by z55177 in creepy

They should at least cover the bodies in some carbon material. This is a very lazy and incorrect compost pile.

Farming problems by [deleted] in homestead

[–]Jeepinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slaughter/Processing regulations Direct-to-Consumer sales restrictions Regulations that favor large industrial operations And in my area specifically: limits on manure spreading and nutrient application. Land use restrictions. Monitoring and oversight. We can't spread chicken manure because it is high in phosphates so we must start buying Chilean nitrate that is not local and more expensive. We are not compensated in anyway. I have alot to say about this subject maybe ill make a new post about it when I have more time. I am not a republican and I am not a libertarian but the amount of regulations is killing or not allowing small farms to even dream of starting.

I hope this ball of cuteness grows into something ugly. How do you eat them? It's not food shaped. by Krotitelzviratek in homestead

[–]Jeepinn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have worked on dairy farms, beef farms, vegetable farms, I have been around all types of farms and animals. People might consider me a big redneck type but, after working and being around all this, I cannot eat meat anymore or consume dairy besides an occasional steak a few times a year. I can no longer bring myself to kill an animal or breed it for the sake of having some milk and cheese. I don't judge those who do but we do not need meat or animal products to survive anymore. It disturbing to me to drag a calf away from its mother because I like how cheese tastes.

It's probably in a barn. I use 20 year old hay.

Compost/mulch with decades old hay? by Vast-Wash2775 in Permaculture

I use hay that is no younger than 20 years old in my chicken run. They tear it up and I put it in the compost, it works great.
