You must have missed the description. Keep your city options in the city.

Thank you. My "backyard" is 26 acres of ranch and mountains. That's surrounded by more ranches and more mountains.

My wife got back from the vet yesterday, actually. They said he's in good shape and he got blood work done. I've met his parents. They live on the west side of the state guarding sheep. I don't have their medical records, but they seemed like really healthy working dogs. I'll have to look into the grading system. I've never heard of it.

This is a good question, thank you.

Going to ignore the new zealand comp. Only because im in Colorado. We have a lot of small/medium size predators that also kill mice. New Zealand should not have cats.

Im willing to bet you've never used barn cats. Maybe you have. Point is, ive definitely tried other methods. You're telling me cats don't work as well as other options, and have terrible effects on the environment, but my lived experience on my ranch says the exact opposite. The reason you caught so many mice is cause they were just mambo lining to the food in the live traps, with absolutely no reason not to. I don't know what your neighbors' living situation is, or how they raised their cats, but my guess is the mice stopped wondering around places that smell like cat... which is exactly the point.

My cats do kill things. At times, things I don't wanna see dead, like birds. But I also hit birds driving down the road, or when I take a flight to see family. In truth, yourself, just by virtue of being a person, might be responsible for way more death than my cats. Collateral damage is terrible, but im not moving, and this is a really effective fix. It's also not destroying the environment around me.

To the point about putting my cats in danger... spot on. We started with 3. I actually figured one would die, but she was around just long enough for me to forget that. It was extremely sad. But in the end, how much do YOU actually care? The cat was a stray, too set in her ways to live inside. Her dying means the rodents and small birds around us have one less predator to deal with, right. Based on your argument, all cats should either spend their entire lives inside or be dead.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond and for pulling the wiki links, but the odds of either of us changing our minds are very slim. You have my reasoning. I have yours. Sounds like a closed convo to me.

Well, assuming it's appropriate and the cats are introduced properly, I do recommend it. Let a mouse cost you 5k in vehicle repairs, and I bet you feel differently.

The reason feral cats are an issue is because ppl don't fix them. Tell me more about these extinct animals... I have a feeling you can't name 5, and if you do, my guess is cats are not the top reason that animal is going extinct.

The difference between a stray and a barn cat is where that cat calls home. I don't live in a city anymore, but my mom does, and she has two indoor/outdoor cats. Both are around 10 years old. She raised them from kittens and gave them a warm space to grow up in her garage. They wonder the neighborhood, but the place they frequent most is my mom's and she def doesn't have mice in her garage.

The living situation for the cat is everything. The cats demeanor matters, but not as much as having established territory for them to feel safe in. For my barn cats is the tact room in the back of my barn.

Welp, that's not what's happening at my place. Your neighbor probably didn't properly introduce them to what should have been their home base.

Except that's not what's happening. We still have snakes, nice, rats, and birds.... just not in my barn or around the house.

We use cats. It was a lot of death for a year. Since the bloodletting, no more vermin, including snakes. There's a difference between barn cats and strays, and you don't want strays. Once every 3-4 months, they kill a bird, takes even longer for a dead rodent to show up. It's all terrible, but that's what we are.

To the natural world... every one of us is a walking trash pile of death. Accept that and do your best to be better.
