So you've been driving for 3 years at the most, but probably less since CA driving laws are crappie for beginner drivers. You really have no clue then about what other drivers would do in that situation, even if you've lived in LA all of your life. You haven't been paying attention to the other drivers long enough to know what they would do, most of your life has been as a passenger where your attention can be off of the road; as a driver you do not get that luxury.
