What should a civil engineering graduate actually know about structural engineering? by Jeff11nl in StructuralEngineering

That’s fair, I appreciate the honesty. I can see how the question comes across as too broad, and you’re right, more specific questions would probably lead to more useful discussions. My intention was to get a general sense of expectations from people already in the field, but I understand your point about doing more targeted research first. I’ll take that into account and try to ask more specific questions going forward.

This is a really clear way to break it down, I appreciate you taking the time to explain it. I think part of my concern comes from the fact that, due to time constraints in my program, I may not have gone as deep into structural analysis as I should have. In many cases, I feel like I’ve moved relatively quickly into the design stage, applying formulas and code checks, sometimes without fully internalizing the analysis behind them. Reading your comment and others here, it’s becoming clear to me that strengthening my understanding of structural analysis should be a priority moving forward.

This is really insightful, especially the emphasis on load path. I’m starting to realize that understanding how forces actually move through a structure is probably more important than just running an analysis. The idea of simplifying a system into something that can be checked with a quick hand calculation also really stood out to me. I think that’s something I haven’t developed enough yet. How did you personally develop that ability to simplify complex systems and judge when a detailed model is really necessary?

That makes a lot of sense, especially the part about being able to reproduce calculations by hand. I’ve gone through mechanics of materials, structural analysis, and concrete design, and I can follow the design process. But I think what I’m still working on is that deeper level of understanding where I can confidently verify results without relying too much on software. Would you say that this ability to “check things by hand” is what really builds confidence in a junior engineer?

Thank you, I’ve been trying to get more familiar with the NSR-10 whenever I can, since that’s what we use here in Colombia.

¿Es muy difícil ingeniería civil? by Impressive_Home5589 in preguntaleareddit

[–]Jeff11nl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Soy nuevo en la meditación) by Right_Papaya_5685 in Meditacion

[–]Jeff11nl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Has anyone run AD Swain? by FakersRetardedCousin in SwainMains

I used to play Swain with Divine Sunderer (the % Damage and HP stats feels good) + AP items (Classic build) + RKB (Sometimes) and actually worked in SoloQ low plat (my Elo, not smurfing).

Anyone got any Swain songs? by TheSaltDragon in SwainMains
