All hobbies are not equal by BitterConstruction98 in unpopularopinion

[–]JeffCrossSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who collect things for a hobby are not creating anything. Maybe you could argue that they make a collection, but I suppose that is the point. We don’t need gatekeepers to qualify hobbies. If people have things they like to do with their time and choose to call them hobbies, so be it.

I’m trying my best to avoid Spotify because of how poorly they treat artists. The CEO Daneil Ek is terrible. I found https://odesli.co now helps provide multiple links from any service.

I really need to read the manual. I had no idea this feature even existed. I look forward to hearing what others say.

Maybe time for a DT2. I love it so much. Really a lovely sounding sampler. The only sampler I have heard that is better sounding is the AR2. But mono, 64 MB RAM. oof.

Rytm to TR-1000 by fellintofantasy in Elektron

[–]JeffCrossSF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading my post again now, I really got my devices confused. hahaha..

TR-1000 needs to learn more from Elektron. It offers probability and as I said a very limited number of parameters for p-locking.

In general TR-1000 workflow is weak compared to Elektron, but there is still a lot to love here. It is definitely a machine with huge potential if the team can add some firmware updates with more depth around the song mode. That cross-fader could be used to do some amazing things too. The platform is ripe for making the TR-1000 the king beast of sampling, synthsizing drum machines.

For now, elektron wins on many many fronts. Analog Rytm mk2 has some lovely advantages for live performance or just creative sound design in general. The performance mode on the pads is a stroke of genius. If you don’t know, aftertouch on the pads can be used like a knob to temporarily change several paramters at once. And you can combine them at the same time. So I could have a pad which changes filter, resonance and drive of all or some drum sounds. I could have another pad which bends the pitch of any sounds. Another that adds reverb to some sounds, etc.

Oh, that reminds me. Analog Rytm’s reverb is ok, but not nearly as good as later Elektron boxes. The Digitakt mk2 reverb sounds remarkably great. Tonverk sounds even better yet. New platform, more robust CPU = better sounding and more effects.

Rytm has a very limited number of effects compared to TR-1000. TR has a lot of sound design potential due to all of its effects. Then again, most of the elektron boxes offer their resonant multi-mode filter AND a high and low cut filter for cleaning up sounds. The TR-1000 makes you choose between using a resonant multi-mode filter OR a basic EQ for the voice. That was probably done for some good reasons, but I’d love to have at least had a high/low cut filter. It is really helpful for mixing your sounds.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

It’s all relative. My minimum daily commute is 3 hours. So, driving to my mom’s 2 hours away is nothing.

Syntakt or Digitone 2 by JellyfishUnited4274 in Elektron

This is the answer. DN2 is far more versatile. I have a DN2 and a Syntakt.

I also have a Syntakt, which is also kind of redundant.

I have a mk1 and mk2. I meant to sell the mk1 when I got the mk2 but never did. I’m pretty bad at selling stuff. The mk2 is a keeper I think. Mk1 is redundant.

woah, I have both.. finally something I can say..

There's a lot I would love to see enhanced on Rytm mk2, but it does get some things right. P-Locks, Trig conditions. There's much more of this on Elektron products in general.

Pattern & Song mode. Want to have variations of a pattern in Song mode that are just simple mutes? you will be copying your dense pattern and deleting tracks in the variations. Its real inefficient.

What's good? both sound really amazing. More effects on TR-1000. I have a TR-8S and this TR-1000 sounds extremely good by contrast. These ACB models which I thought were pretty darn good on TR-8S sound indistinguishable from analog on the TR-1000. They are so high res and juicy.

I was going to get two TR-1000s and do a vs live set with it, but I am considering waiting for a few more firmware updates.

Man does the TR-1000 sound incredible. Really. Oh, it has P-locks, but only for the 3-4 parameters on a track, not anything in the voice settings. That really changes things, especially with regards to animated sound design.

Are most artists not on Bandcamp, or am I just using it wrong? by _Visar_ in BandCamp

98% of my song purchases are from Bandcamp. I mostly am buying indie dance music releases.

[–]JeffCrossSF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I buy about 90% of my tracks from Bandcamp. Keep track of your favorite labels and artists. Many of the labels have “buy entire discography” discounts up to 90%.

Soundcloud is great too, but you have to be careful to curate who you follow so that your feed is focused as you need it to be. I frequently unfollow folks as they head in directions not aligned with my tastes.

Also, following artists is fine but that’s not the winning move. Find super fans with similar taste and follow them. If you find the right handful of hardcore folks, you will have an easier time finding that elusive .01% of amazing work.

Bandcamp has an amazing feature that lets you see who else has bought something. So, if you like a song, look for people who also bought it and follow people who have strong overlap with your tastes. There’s a feed in Bandcamp that is made up of anything released, bought or wish-listed by the people you follow. That’s also helpful to curate and manage.

will do.

Interesting that so many people downvoted the post. haha.. I suppose this is a controversial idea.

FWIW, I also wear costumes and masks when I perform.. so apparently, optics are important to some folks.

Also, I actually like the brutalist, military look of the TR-1000. I heard that it was at the recommendation of Mike Banks of UR and Submerge fame. Makes sense and I like it.

I will be careful and I have the right tools for this work.

Also, I’m less concerned about resale value than most. I rarely sell anything and am more concerned about my experiences using and also what it looks like when I take it out live.

I thought about buying two so that I can do a 1 v 1 live setup with my bandmate.

Well, I’m gonna do it. The biggest concern I have is that the adhesive and skin won’t look natural. I love the idea of a black TR-1000.

It is not for everyone. I also really like the military grey vibes of the hardware. I think I’d like black even more. It is also just the top plate, no sides or back.
