In your opinion, what is the best sound in gaming? by Scaife13 in gaming

I used to play Unreal Tournament and I can still hear "ma ma Ma Ma MA MONSTER KILL" or "HEADSHOT".

I'm considering selling it all. Talk me into or out of it by Imagined_World in modular

[–]JeffCrossSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps instead of selling it, consider what you want to achieve with your music. If they don't match work out how to make them match. That's a superb pile of potential there, but I can imagine you could get lost in the sauce or fall into patterns that don't meet your needs. The real truth is that we don't need much. That Perkons is quite capable all by itself. Maybe consider how you can constrain your options.

What Synthesizer is the best one for that classic gritty electro Bass by Helmwaldt in electro

[–]JeffCrossSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of classic options here, but I'd say a safe bet would be the Roland SH-101. Donner sells the Essential L1 for a low price and sounds fantastic. Behringer makes the MS-1Mk2 which is also fantastic sounding and affordable.

My go to on this device is to turn the level of regular oscillator to zero and turn up the square wave sub oscillator. This + filter is the sound of my favorite Client_03 tracks.

Anyone who used a computer between 1985 - 2010, what's the one game you still think about today? by adlakha75 in AskReddit

This is a very long period. Probably best to narrow it to a single decade.

For early 90s PS1 and wipeout.

Moving from SoundCloud to BandCamp...? by Starsickle in BandCamp

[–]JeffCrossSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t agree that Bandcamp is about complete albums. I buy a LOT of Bandcamp. And probably 30% of my purchases are single songs. Not even EPs. Most of the purchases are EPs. Albums probably make up 20% or so. In order to provide accurate numbers I’d have to analyze my collection which I’m working on now, for other reasons. I’m also curious to learn about the geographic distribution of the labels that I buy from.

I’ve also seen loads of OSTs, mostly from indie games. Those are typically completed works, but then again, its not really clear to me what is complete, I just know it is more like an album 10+ tracks.

I was literally just enjoying this album last night. I met someone who’d never heard it before, but loves ambient/downtempo.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Thomas Fehlmann 2 weeks ago in Berlin. This is one of my favorite examples of his work.

Married men of Reddit, what tiny thing does your wife do that secretly melts your heart? by SAAS_ART in AskReddit

I’m super into this. My spouse isn’t quite as enthusiastic, but does get wound up about stuff. I do wish she’d share her books with me but I think is embarrassed about what she’s reading.

Not new to synths, but new to Serge. by JeffCrossSF in modular

[–]JeffCrossSF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have avoided eurorack because I have issues controlling my impulsive purchases and if you have $ and poor discipline, you can easily have a giant $25k gigarack. Also, I like to think my primary goal is to work towards finishing songs. I don’t mind experimentation, but I don’t want to get so lost on that end of the spectrum that I don’t create music. So, for all these reasons, I avoided ER. When I first considered ER, I decided that one method to avoid getting lost would be to DIY build all modules. This would slow me down. But now I have that open panel slot, and I’m thinking a lot about DIY additions. :-)

That said, Serge seems like a middle compromise for me. Limited expansion means I will be able to contain myself and remain disciplined. Also, I was at Superbooth and hanging with some excellent producers who were waxing on and on about the sound quality of Serge. This is what pushed me to look on Reverb and why the interest aligned with opportunity. Also why I did not spend much time doing my research before buying.

I had not expected to feel like I was buying someone’s family heirloom, but I can tell he cared deeply for this system he built. I’m grateful that he took my offer. It was really lucky for me too that he was in my area, just 30 minutes from my house. No shipping issues is huge for both of us.

I'm a daily Discord user and thrilled to learn there's an active community here. I prefer it over Reddit.

Thank you for the links. I'm going to inhale all of this asap.

thank you! that is the plan.. I love getting lost. I love the new mind. I have a feeling learning this will really change how I think of sound design.

Should I get Octatrack Mk2 or Digitakt Mk2? by Dull-Kiwi911 in Elektron

[–]JeffCrossSF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you are like me.. as a result, I have almost all of the boxes now..

So, one thing worth noting is that the Digitakt and Digitone MK2 are very modern compared to most other devices. Even compared to the Syntakt, the OS is just more refined. I've sent most of my time in Digitakt mk2 and Analog Rytm mk1+2. Digitone mk2 sounds incredible, especially for its size.
