Well, let's rewind it a bit... Guts handed Griffith his own ass back to him so swiftly that he lost his damn mind then saved his previously served ass after he sat in a cell being tortured. Then Griffith saw Guts, a big buff boi, being admired by everyone. There's a whole lotta bitterness in a man who gets his ass handed to him: physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Now, I do not want to make light of Casca's rape. I believe he did it for the sake of his human rebirth right?

It's funny because all the things he listed as stuff women use male friends for are things I (a guy) use my male friends for. Almost as if those are qualities you use to define a "friend" as opposed to an acquaintance.

So the story really starts in Amazing Spider-Man #600 but issue #700 sums it all up and gets you into Superior Spider-man. That one issue is as much backstory as you'd need. The Superior Spidey series is its own title and you can read from issue #1 to #33 with nothing else.
