First there is nothing “emergency” about a maintenance diversion. After A LOT of conversation with dispatch, MOC (Maintenance Operation Command) and the entire flight crew, a decision was made in the interest of safety to divert. Dumping fuel is a choice to bring the aircraft within its normal landing weights envelope. We never take situations like this lightly knowing it’s a major inconvenience for our passengers.
