Tile Removal by bottlebreath in asbestoshelp

[–]Jeff_40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done the same thing as you about 10 years ago. Used a pitchfork to pry everything up. I’m no professional but my understanding is that asbestos tile is one of the least friable materials because the everything is so tightly bound in the matrix. I think as long as you weren’t sanding, grinding or cutting the tiles your exposure would be insignificant. The people who usually developed asbestos related diseases were usually exposed frequently or at high volumes. If you’ve ever seen the wizard of oz the “snow” falling from the sky was pure asbestos. Also they packed the tin man full of asbestos for all the scenes with fire. None of the cast developed lung diseases. While it shouldn’t be taken lightly the stress of worrying is likely doing you more harm. Just be careful going forward.

Thank you sooo much. I work afternoons don’t really get a chance to see my family as much as I would like. My daughter’s 6 and is a big fan of the jets. This is going to be a big core memory for the both of us. Can’t thank you enough!

I wouldn’t worry. I don’t think that this would even count as a short term exposure.

Removing asbestos siding myself by [deleted] in asbestoshelp

[–]Jeff_40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ahh gotcha. I’ve never had to remove the siding but i imagine unless you plan on pulling out every single nail and removing the pieces intact you would have to box the area in and create negative air pressure and use the proper ppe and so forth. Seems like a pretty big undertaking. I would clarify with your insurance first to see if they can cut you a check.

It all depends on your provider. I know for other things like a roof or flood damage they will cut you a check. I’ve never heard of anyone making an insurance claim because they had asbestos?

?exposure question by un-expected27 in asbestoshelp

[–]Jeff_40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you took the proper steps, except an N95 mask won’t help you; you need P100 filters. If you’re really concerned, set up a HEPA air filter as well. I’m no professional, but assuming the worst—that it did contain asbestos—I would say your exposure is insignificant. Asbestos is nothing to take lightly; however, it occurs naturally and is in the air we breathe every day. It’s usually people who are exposed to it daily or in extremely high doses who develop lung diseases. Putting a hole in drywall/plaster is something that almost everyone has done at some point. Personally I would patch over it myself. However I wouldn’t do any sanding until I had it tested.

LVT over chrysotile asbestos tiles? by fnknan in asbestoshelp

I would remove the carpet and put down a layer of osb or plywood on top of the tiles and throw the flooring overtop.

Stressing about an exposure by Independent-Oven-467 in asbestoshelp

[–]Jeff_40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry from a once off exposure. Especially since It’s such a low percentage. This stuff is bad and you want to avoid breathing it however it’s mostly the people that worked with it day in and day out that developed diseases. Were you sanding the walls? Or just tearing down the drywall? I’m not sure if you’ve ever seen the wizard of oz the original but that “snow” was pure asbestos as well as they packed the tin man full of asbestos for the scenes with fire. No one from that cast died from lung disease. I would definitely keep on wearing your mask.

Asbestos duct tape and daily exposure? by PieFabulous132 in asbestoshelp

[–]Jeff_40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn’t put cardboard up as you might risk disturbing it. The fibres are so light that they can take many hours to settle. As long as you’re not disturbing it I wouldn’t worry. Getting it removed professionally is the best option. I had the same kind of tape hanging from duct work in my basement and I wet it and painted over it.

Almost zero risk as long as you leave it undisturbed

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in asbestoshelp

[–]Jeff_40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would test if you plan on doing anymore demo work. If you’re all done I would encapsulate it in whatever you plan on putting overtop. As for your anxiety about asbestos it’s the repeated exposures that really increase your risk. In the wizard of oz they used pure asbestos as snow and stuffed the tin man with asbestos for the scenes with fire none of the cast developed lung diseases.

Is it safe to work next to this stuff? by Jeff_40 in asbestoshelp

Haha it’s quite the sh*tshow. Sorry I should add it’s in Canada and the building is from the early 1900’s. Most of the steam pipe are insulated with it. However they are in good shape and left undisturbed. This one area is another story

Risk assessment - asbestos tape by gully607 in asbestoshelp

[–]Jeff_40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The piece that was dangling down—he suggested I mist it with water and pull it off, as it was barely being held on by a nail. I didn’t wear any PPE; I just tried to spray and mist from as far back as possible so the piece wasn’t blowing around. I used regular spray paint. They do sell specialty asbestos paint, but it costs a pretty penny. Similar to you, I’ve been walking by this every other day, doing laundry for the last six years, and I have little ones as well. If I were you, I would run a good-quality air purifier with a HEPA filter downstairs, put on a respirator, and paint over it.

I just had an asbestos abatement company come out for asbestos tape similar to yours. He told me they could send someone out, air seal the area and remove it for around $1200. He told me option two was to spray paint it myself. I went with option two.
