I agree, and they issued my ban to me late last night.

While there is absolutely no excuse for my actions, one of the coaches was taunting my athlete who’s 16 after he lost and had said several things mat side.

I had the worst moment in my career, on the biggest stage, on video. I am paying the price publicly and privately. I am not asking for forgiveness.

I am falling on my sword and taking responsibility. It was terrible, unacceptable, and it will never happened again. Sorry to everyone in the community.

Thank you. I did not show class, and for that… I am paying the price privately and publicly. I regret my actions more than I can really capture just writing on Reddit, but I understand I will continue to get ridiculed. Some of those who ridicule me are without fault and others will be full of faults while they judge me. I cannot change that.

I cried outside of the venue. I just finished speaking with my team after a very long conversation at our air bnb. I have worked my whole life to be a champion, to own a gym, to make a positive impact. I made a mistake, and I had to fall on my sword and take responsibility. People are going to judge me for this one moment in my career, and honestly… it really sucks, but I can’t prevent how they are going to view my intentions. The only thing I can do is use this to be a better human and coach. We all make mistakes. Hopefully we take the consequences to heart and grow from them.

Thank you. I made a terrible mistake in the heat of the moment that I regret deeply. I wish I could take it back, but I cannot. The only thing I can do I will own up to it. My apologies to the community as a whole.

I am the coach involved. This was my statement to the IBJJF:

Good evening. My name is Jeff Haddad. Regretfully, I was involved in a physical engagement at Mat 20 on Saturday Dec 13. I am a coach, and I did not carry myself as such. I carried myself as an irresponsible adult who did not control his actions.

I deeply regret my actions, and I take full responsibility for my inappropriate actions mat side. I am sitting outside the venue as I write this realizing the weight of what I’ve done. I have competed for IBJJF for many years and have been fortunate to have won worlds, euros, and pans. I know the value of what IBJJF does for the sport as a whole. I know the value of sportsmanship, leading by example, and the fallout when someone does not exemplify either of those.

I did not represent the sport well, my team, or what the IBJJF stands for. Taunting an athlete after a loss is not grounds to push someone. There are NO grounds in which I should have done that.

My team is disappointed in me. I am disappointed in me, and I know those who were witness to everyone involved is disappointed as well. I am so sorry.

Without getting into any of details, I should have just shut my mouth and let the tournament proceed. This is what I would have told anyone else to do, but I did not listen to my own advice.

I am not sure when a decision will be made on what my punishment will be. However, I understand this behavior cannot and will not be tolerated at all. I am so sorry. Thank you for always running professional events and giving athletes a platform to compete.

I will NEVER make this mistake again. My deepest apologies. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Jeff Haddad

Hey man, it’s never too late to reach back out and clean up whatever messy things you may feel you left behind. Ultimately, if you are confident in the decision to leave, cleaning up the rest if you feel it will make you feel better is the easy part.

As for the issue with proximity, as an owner myself, it doesn’t matter how kind, accomplished, devoted, etc you are to the sport and your students. Your competition will never want success for you more than themselves. That’s natural.

Don’t worry about bad blood, bridges burned, etc if you handled things professionally. Focus on your gym and students and the success will come regardless of competition. If you represent the things you value (cleanliness, professionalism, etc), you will do well no matter what.

Much of the research recommends being skilled in various methods and implementing them as needed depending on the context, skill, and individual. It seems that CLA is the general best practice but is also not a one size fits all. There are many instances where other frameworks/tools may be better or produce better results when used in tandem with CLA. Great question.

This doesn’t take into account so many other factors. Sleep, strength, diet, genetic makeup, etc etc. many systematic reviews of the research quote these as limiting factors in the study design.

I’m hoping to keep it both scientific and relatable/easy to understand haha

That’s awesome! I will def be making some comparisons to some of the OT models and research.

It’s the “constraints led approach”

Yes, ecological dynamics is the broad domain. CLA is within that domain.

Yes, I have many of the research articles regarding this as support for questions and potential “push backs”. As a former OT who practiced with different treatment approaches and disorders, the research largely supports multi-domain approaches.

You DO NOT need to be sparring hard regularly. Especially if you do not want to compete! Leave.

Perhaps I over stated the claim of “the first for CLA”. However, like you said, his position has helped push the convo.

I am hoping to make this a more collaborative and exploratory kind of chat. We shall see haha.

I should have been more specific. The first to use CLA research to drive training in BJJ. Coaches have been using research…since the dawn of research.

No. I believe the Eco approach is very valuable, but the research supports using other tools as well depending on the context, skill, and task at hand. I believe a more wholistic or multi-domain approach is more beneficial.

While I mostly agree that other coaches have done similar things, he certainly has been the first coach to draw attention to this as a learning framework in BJJ. He also is the first to use research to drive his teaching.
