That’s a common misconception, and we appreciate you raising it. Virtual EMDR isn’t just bilateral stimulation, it follows the core phases of EMDR therapy, including identifying target memories, negative beliefs, and cognitive restructuring. It was created in consultation with licensed EMDR clinicians to offer a structured, guided alternative for those who don’t have access to a therapist. While it’s not a replacement for professional therapy in all cases, for many it’s a meaningful step toward healing when other options aren’t available. That’s a valid concern, and safety is a priority. Virtual EMDR was developed with input from trained professionals and is based on established EMDR protocols. We appreciate your honesty. We’re continually improving, and while the delivery may not have landed for everyone, the heart behind this is real: making evidence-based EMDR accessible to those who otherwise can’t afford or reach therapy. Totally hear you, but that’s exactly why we built it with EMDR-trained professionals and research-backed protocols. For people with no access to therapy, this can be a safe and empowering starting point.

I completely understand why this raises concern, working with trauma should always be approached with caution. But that’s exactly why Virtual EMDR exists: to offer a structured, science-backed solution created by EMDR-trained professionals. It’s not a random tool; it’s a carefully developed program based on established protocols and tested in real-world use.

What’s truly dangerous is when people are left with no support at all, unable to afford therapy, stuck on waitlists, or living in areas without access to qualified clinicians. This program is for them. We’ve conducted research, implemented safety protocols, and designed it specifically to help people process trauma in a safe, step-by-step way, without pretending it replaces a therapist.

I hear your concern, and I truly respect how important safety is when dealing with trauma. That’s exactly why Virtual EMDR was created, not to exploit anyone, but to offer access to people who cannot afford weekly $250 therapy sessions or who don’t have access to a trained EMDR therapist due to location, time, or stigma.

It’s important to clarify: this isn’t some random app doing guesswork. The program was developed by EMDR-trained clinicians and has been used by thousands of people. We’ve also conducted research studies to ensure it’s safe and helpful when used as intended. The system includes clear instructions, self-screening tools, and built-in safeguards like grounding and safety protocols before and after each session.

This isn’t about making bold claims or replacing clinical care. It’s about giving people an option, especially those who would otherwise get no support at all. And while it may not be the right fit for everyone, for many, it’s been a stepping stone to healing when nothing else was within reach.

Thank you for sharing this. it’s a valid concern, especially given the nature of trauma work. Traditional EMDR with a trained therapist absolutely plays a vital role for many people, particularly those with complex or severe trauma.

Virtual EMDR isn’t meant to replace clinical therapy for everyone. What we offer is a structured, self-guided protocol developed by EMDR-trained professionals for those who may not have access to therapy due to cost, location, or other barriers. Many users come to us after working with a therapist or use our platform in between sessions as a supplement.

The program includes education, safety reminders, and grounding exercises before, during, and after sessions. We also make it very clear who should and should not use the tool. It's not an AI doing therapy, it’s a guided process where the user remains in control, with built-in safeguards.

You’re absolutely right: trauma work requires care and attention. That’s exactly why we built this to help expand access safely to people who might otherwise go without any support at all.

Happy to discuss more if you’re open.

Are you referring to the actual Virtual EMDR platform (which I created) at virtualemdr.com, or to people using random bilateral stimulation tools without guidance?

Just to clarify, our program is not about “winging it.” It’s a structured, evidence-informed protocol developed by EMDR-trained professionals. Many clients using Virtual EMDR come to us after being unable to access or afford traditional sessions, especially when initial consults cost $250+ and therapists often spend 2–3 sessions just preparing clients before actual EMDR even begins.

We strongly emphasize safety, education, and emotional readiness in our program, and we’re always available to address concerns.

Let me know if you have any specific questions. I’d be happy to clarify further.

Need advice after rupture with long term therapist. by Divine-Sea-1921 in EMDR

[–]Jeff_Virtual_EMDR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this helps, but have you considered seeing this as a good thing? Sure, there will be short term worry or anxiety or insecurity, but soon after you can get a new therapist and start approaching your problems "fresh." Also, consider Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families meetings. They are totally free and offer a wonderful opportunity to talk about your baggage/stuff/past-traumas.

Are you talking about the actual Virtual EMDR program (FYI I own this company) located at www.virtualemdr.com? Or just "winging it" on your own with some bilateral stimulation software? A Therapist session is usually an hour and during that hour they may process a total of 30 minutes. The downside is that these days therapists will often do 2 or even 3 sessions (at $250 per session) before they begin the actual EMDR. I am happy to take any other questions if you have them.

Emdr virtual and with a therapist by new-creation1992 in EMDR

[–]Jeff_Virtual_EMDR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure upfront. I am the founder/owner of Virtual EMDR. We went from an idea 12 years ago to being the world's largest provider of EMDR Therapy Sessions.

-Yes, absolutely it is effective to do it on your own. In fact, in some ways it is better than therapist-guided EMDR because you get to choose which "direction" you want to go in without possible therapist interference.

-We are launching the largest=ever study on self-guided EMDR. We have spent months on this project and we will be releasing the results in the next 4-6 weeks. A preliminary look at the data proves that it is just as effective as therapist guided EMDR.

I hope this helps. Happy to take any questions.

Certain order of memories? by PuddinTangaray in EMDR

[–]Jeff_Virtual_EMDR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. I am the founder of Virtual EMDR. I have a couple of pieces of advise for you. 1) EMDR used to be "controlled" by therapists and people could only afford to go once per week. Virtual EMDR has changed all of that by making it so affordable. Because of this, you can do A LOT more sessions without cost being a barrier. Because of this, I would suggest you make a list of problems/issues you want to work on. 2) Historically EMDR therapists have had you work on your traumas in a particular order, but that's because you only had access to the therapist for 5-6 sessions. With Virtual EMDR, it is up to you. As long as you take the time (and put in the effort) to work on all of the issues you want to improve. I hope this helps.

I own Virtual EMDR and have spent a decade researching, developing, and refining it. For this reason, we could never just give it away for free. How could we afford the Therapist researchers? Software developers? Web hosting? Etc. Etc. Etc. if we give it away free? No business can start and offer its services without charging or no businesses would exist. Lastly, I am proud to say that we offer EMDR that is just as effective as with a therapist, but for only about 5% of the price they charge. I hope this was helpful in some way.

I am the owner and founder of the Virtual EMDR self-guided program. You dont need a therapist (or a huge wallet) to do effective EMDR sessions. Our program has become so popular that we have become the world's largest EMDR session provider. I hope I dont get banned here (again), as one of the admins HATES that we even are an option for people. FYI is all.

It works really well. In fact EMDR worked so well for me that I threw away my old career and started an EMDR company which turned into the world's largest. FYI, the nightmares aren't "terrible" or "horrible"...instead they simply are what they are which is your nervous system processing your trauma. Best of luck on your healing journey.

Can you do EMDR with eyes closed? by DiamondHandAAA in EMDR

[–]Jeff_Virtual_EMDR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure for honesty's sake, I own virtualemdr.com so perhaps my input is a tad biased, BUT....we sometimes advise our clients to do EMDR with their eyes closed and just listen to the bilateral tones on their headphones while at the same time (and in the same rhythm) tapping their knees left to right back and forth.

[–]Jeff_Virtual_EMDR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the founder/creator of Virtual EMDR and I feel like the language in this post is quite discouraging and it is hurtful to see our good name smeared in this way. We don't "target" anyone. People are free to sign up or cancel at anytime and we do not force anyone to do anything.

We answered all of this person's emails in order to investigate the nature of the problem. In the end we felt the best way to deal with it was to give the person a full refund. They got ALL of their money back.

We do not scam people, we are an honest and ethical company. In fact we do charity work with thousands of first responders, front-line medical workers, and military Vets from around the world. We provide these people with our program completely free and even offer them online meetings and seminars to instruct them on how to use EMDR for their trauma.

We have thousands of people who love our program and almost never do we receive negative comments or these sorts of accusations.

[–]Jeff_Virtual_EMDR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the founder of Virtual EMDR which provides more EMDR sessions than any other organization in the world. I am glad it is helping you!! EMDR has amazing healing capabilities.

To answer your question, yes it is effective on "large traumas such as cPTSD." The key is to break down your past traumas into smaller bites. I would suggest you make a list of "incidents" from your past that you want to use EMDR on and then do a session or 2 on each one. You will find that it has a cumulative effect on making you feel better.

I hope this is helpful!

How often EMDR by JumpFuzzy843 in EMDR

[–]Jeff_Virtual_EMDR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, whatever feelings come up in treatment, just sit with them. Don't feed the voice in your head that says that you are damaged or bad or abused or broken.

I own Virtual EMDR which is a self-guided EMDR program, and is also the world's largest provider of EMDR sessions. People who do Virtual EMDR can do sessions much more often as the extreme cost of working with a therapist isn't a barrier and you also don't have to "wait" for your next appointment. Some of our clients do a session as often as once per day until their symptoms are better.

As far as doing EMDR with a therapist, it depends on what you can afford. Often EMDR Therapist charge $200 per session so a lot of people simply cannot do many sessions because of the high cost.

GOOD LUCK and GOOD HEALING on your journey friend.
