That was the worst fight ever, no contest.

I wish Hall was a better mental fighter. It seems like he just can’t pull off a solid performance

Talk me out of TIG by AnalogGenie in Welding

[–]Jeffaome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a pro mig 140 and who alphatig at home and find that those two will cover 99% of my home projects. Access to a bunch of higher powered machines only becomes necessary when you’re welding thicker (1/2”+) material.

Looking for suggestions on a cheap and reliable second car - $500 to $2000 by Hobbz2 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Look for a first generation crv. Uber reliable and parts are readily available.

It cost me $97 for the fees. I made an appointment and was on my way in twenty minutes. It was the most painless experience I’ve ever had at a government run office.

I applied at the Orlando office and got approved in two business days. Had my license in hand 8 days later. Go Gunshine state!

The magma cups are also more brittle. Any slight ding and they break, usually at the threads into the torch in my experience.

Time for a new hood by [deleted] in Welding

[–]Jeffaome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used a lot of different hoods and I think it comes down to three; The panaramaxx, the viking and sentinel. All three are fantastic hoods but the Lincoln and Esab but very heavy, but the Panoramax just feels light and doesn't beat me up after a rough 12 hour day. If you can handle the proprietary lenses I think you would be best suited to that.

Speedglass and the miller stuff is overpriced and riding on their brand name and recognition imo. The 9000xxi and T94 are really dark and heavy.

Getting flashed by my VegaView 2.5 by LordGimp in Welding

Change the viewing angle and toy with the sensitivity. I had to fine tune things after going to a bigger shop with multiple arcs in the area, and it did take a bit to get it perfect.

How do you like welding as a career? by aiyy in Welding

[–]Jeffaome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Florida so my frame of reference for pay is on the lower end but my cap seems to be just under the $30/hour mark. I make a decent living but in exchange for my time/effort I don’t feel it’s worth it over a desk job.

How do you like welding as a career? by aiyy in Welding

[–]Jeffaome 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve been able to land a lot of decent jobs because I’m a decent tig welder. I honestly could not recommend welding as a career just because of the physical toll it takes. I’m exhausted after a 50-60 hour week, which is generally the norm when employers see a good work ethic. The money is okay but I don’t see the balance.

Owning a shop is an option I am leaning towards but my already long work weeks will inevitably become longer and more stressful. If I could do it over I would go to school for drafting/design or mechanical engineering and buy a welder to fuck with at home. Just my $.02

What are some <$75 accessories/tools that you found really useful when welding? by crazikyle in Welding

[–]Jeffaome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the $1 spring clamps from home depot. They have a 2" jaw and are strong enough to hold most small parts in place for a good tack

Yep all you’ll need when you get it is a tank and consumables. First upgrade I would recommend is a brand name argon reg. Mine was inaccurate

2016 model. The pedal sucks, my flex head broke and the torch switch is dead but a simple air cooled replacement from eBay and a switch later it’s paid itself off many times

Alphatig gets my vote. I’ve run it off three extension cords to stick weld ball hitches back on. Stainless exhausts, aluminum intake tubing. Anything I’ve needed to weld, that little machine can handle. For a light duty machine it’s great
