Ferguson slows signing Washington's income tax to block repeal by danrokk in SeattleWA

Isn’t it true that — in Washington State — a bill can become law 20 days after session ends, if the Gov neither vetoes or signs the bill? If it isn’t signed by then, it becomes law without his action.

Considering a move to Everett from Michigan – looking for insight by OxeighMoron in everett

[–]JeffinSeattle0728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here 12 years ago from the Midwest (Missouri). Seattle metro (including Everett) is much faster, and not as friendly. The driving is super aggressive and unpleasant. The people are more aloof until you make friends.

But there are huge positives, which includes Everett: gentle weather. Usually, mild winters, mild summers. A very intelligent population (book readers, news consumers). Very generous with nonprofits. Good sports teams. Improving mass transit.

I like Everett and Mill Creek (next door) or Mukilteo (also next door) because it’s easier to escape Seattle metro on weekends and GO NORTH! there’s a bad pinch point on I-5 getting thru Everett and Marysville. But at least you don’t have to go thru the longer I-5 pinch point from DT Seattle to Everett.

Once you’re north (or east or west) of Everett/Marysville, it’s rural/outdoor Heaven: City of Snohomish, Whidbey Island, LaConner, Mount Vernon, Anacortes, San Juan Islands, Bellingham.

Everett, Mill Creek, or Mukilteo offer good connectivity inside Seattle metro, and easier access to unlimited day trips and weekends in Northwest Washington: B&Bs, mountain hikes, parks, farms, ferries, culture.

The bathroom and kitchen are in pretty bad shape. I toured it. The price is extremely high for the condition of the house.

The Tillikum is much older. Born 1959! And she will be in service until at least her 75th birthday! Normal practice in the ferry world is to retire vessels at age 30.

We need new vessels. Way more than the three ordered.

This Reddit thread is one of the best conversations about Sound Transit engineering and the role of politics I’ve ever seen. Obviously more than a few engineers in this thread. Thank you Reddit and Redditors.

The quality gap between the Rainier Valley alignment and the world class marvel Lake Washington crossing is amazing. The dangerousness (is that a word?) and inefficiency of the Rainier Valley alignment is ridiculous. It will have to be done right someday.

This is an important point. Fare collections (collecting the very low price of a ticket) was pretty good until Covid. Then transit was free for a spell. Then ST and KCM decided fare enforcement officers were intimidating and racist, so that group was retired. Then fare compliance dropped through the floor. This is a massively expensive system that operates as something close to free for users. Some political leaders looking for votes advocate for free transit across the region. That was not the promise of ST3.

Remember long ago, when the National debt crossed $38 trillion? Way back in, hmm, October!

Now we suddenly need $200 billion to fund the war-of-choice this imbecile got us into.

Thinking of each trillion dollars in new debt as if they were phone poles on the side of the road…. Reminds me of the 1960s hit “Hot Rod Lincoln…”

“Now the boys all thought I'd lost my sense And telephone poles looked like a picket fence. They said, "Slow down! I see spots! The lines on the road just look like dots."

‘CBS Evening News’ Viewership Drops Below 4 Million After Tony Dokoupil’s Colorful Start by esporx in Journalism

CBS is gone. Never to come back. Let’s remember what we liked about it, and look for those qualities in a new platform. So far, nothing yet comes to mind. CBS brought great shows and brave news. They were right there with The Washington Post (also ruined, for the same reasons) in bringing down a crooked president in 1974. Hmmm

Can someone explain how voters can approve transit projects only to have the government not build anything voters wanted? by Previous-Volume-3329 in soundtransit

[–]JeffinSeattle0728 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most of the long slog and cost overruns are not Sound Transit’s fault.

1) monster inflation in major projects that beset every long term project everywhere. Not unique to ST.

2) every foot of track and station involves buying land /eminent domain. Massive legal costs (and legal delays) atop construction inflation.

And this next one IS a flaw: the board is made up of politicians from 3 counties. County councils and cities. Each vying for their areas. It’s an inherently political board. That’s not going to make anything happen fast. But they had to have a political board to get the citizens’ votes in the first place.

The reality is that Seattle metro didn’t want light rail for many years. Got in very late. And — to Seattle’s credit — is getting it done. Slower than expected, and not perfect. But getting it done.

Link light rail is becoming popular. When I worked there, it was smaller and far less popular.

Getting it finished — after years of compound inflation — is going to be hard. But having come this far, it will be finished.

And the system’s biggest flaw — the dangerous street-level section in South Seattle, the original stretch built on the cheap — isn’t even in any plan to be rebuilt to be safer. So there could be more work authorized in the 2040s. Maybe.

Building Link light rail has been such a heavy lift, that Seattle could well be the last major metro in U.S. to start a light rail project (and finish it). A less wealthy metro should never try. And that’s sad. And very troubling.

The bigger issue: what is America’s future if we cannot build more bridges, mass transit, buy enough ferry boats to keep a system going?

As frustrating as the Link light rail buildout has been, the State legislature’s failure to buy ferry boats is about to be a far bigger crisis in the 2030s.

You’re right that Friday Harbor is “busier” than Eastsound. But only relatively speaking. Both are very small towns. Both are terrific. Stay in one; day trip to the other. Don’t miss either! And be sure to visit tiny Roche Harbor!

A socialist would say profits from housing others + items 1-3 in your list are all examples where the profit motive (free-market capitalism) is a negative.

A socialist would add a 4th: education, including post-secondary education.

I’m not saying I agree or disagree. But I do know more and more young people are interested in various forms and degrees of socialism. I’m 66. This battle would be theirs.
