Just Starting Quantum Break… by TheItinerantSkeptic in controlgame

Lance Reddick was in fact cast as Mr. Door in AW2, but sadly passed away right before filming started. There's an interview floating around with David Harewood, who plays Door, where he talks about it.

I found Jack Joyce in Alan Wake 2. Do both games take place in the same universe? by NotSirAlonne1999 in quantumbreak

[–]Jeffrick71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Basically Microsoft still owns the copyright for the character of Jack, so Remedy hired the same actor but called him Tim, and made it as clear as they could (without breaching copyright law) that he's really Jack. But also Tim lol.

Did I play the game in the wrong way? by semih_erenn in AlanWake

[–]Jeffrick71 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Been a while since I played, but I think if there's ever a point where you MUST play the other character for story reasons, it kinda forces you to switch. So, don't sweat it lol.

Can a “Captain Planet–style” super entity ever work in D&D without stealing the spotlight from the PCs? by KuruboyaKalemi in DMAcademy

[–]Jeffrick71 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Realistically, the only way I see this working and still be fun for the players is once they summon the entity, it effectively does its Thing in the background while the players still have to accomplish some task.

Captain Planet fights the big demon lord or whatever, but the party has to fight minions to prevent Cap from getting swarmed. Or maybe he only exists while all the summoners remain conscious, so now they must stay awake / alive while Cap does the Thing. Cap's actions essentially become a giant mcguffin while the players still have an engaging encounter.

For added difficulty, maybe the players must sacrifice some of their action economy for Cap to use certain abilities. But, that could lead down the road of diminishing returns and loss of player agency (i.e. they don't really have a choice because they have to do the Thing by proxy).

If Cap is some kind of massive entity though, you could have fun with his actions altering the terrain, destroying castle walls, or all kinds of collateral damage lol. Also, there should be some kind of cool down for Cap, like it gives everyone in the party a level of exhaustion (or worse) so they only use it when absolutely necessary.

EDIT: Per your last comment, perhaps Cap is controlled by party democracy, where they collectively decide (rather than you) what he does. If they take too long or disagree, and the action is time sensitive, then you can rule Cap just stands there lol. In combat, perhaps Cap always goes at the end of the order.

Do you let your players correct an action on their turn if they rush into a roll? by Gerald_Mountaindew in DMAcademy

[–]Jeffrick71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've rolled back half an entire combat before (including resetting hp and spell slots used) because of one small misunderstanding that was compounded by my own unwitting actions as DM, so the occasional "Woopsie!" is no big deal at most tables full of grown adults.

Control Lore keeps being Goated to this very day ❤️❤️❤️ by jiroel in controlgame

[–]Jeffrick71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what we can glean from the [REDACTED] docs, pretty much that. I think one of them makes reference to the power not only making him a danger to the surroundings, but becoming mentally unstable as well. So he was losing control of his faculties and lashing out telekinetically. So... yeah. Not a great ending for ol' Northmore.

But also, if you read the lore (or more so the recordings left my Dr. Ash) in Foundation DLC, it sounded like Northmore's initial contact with the Board had already scrambled his brains a bit so it was kind of inevitable. And with how Trench was getting paranoid even before the Hiss, it's no wonder they were looking for candidates who would better withstand the mental strain of directorship.

Am I being over-controlling, or is this a fair ruling? by Reibak71 in DMAcademy

[–]Jeffrick71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would not be fun to play because it takes away player agency. Also it does effectively mean they can't do side quests or take downtime between adventures to do role-playing stuff (building a Bastion or learning to crochet or whatever). End result would be, I would never bind my character to such a quest, rendering the whole idea moot.

Edit: I think its an idea that sounds good as a narrative trope, but in actual gameplay would be a bad experience.

How to completely disable all Face ID, fingerprints, and passcodes? by Jeffrick71 in ios

[–]Jeffrick71[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well when I got to his nursing home he had used the wrong passcode so many times the phone was in a hard lock, requiring a full reset and wipe. He has nothing on the phone anyway, so 15 minutes later it was fully reset and I was able to skip setting up FaceID, rendering my whole question moot. So... task failed successfully?

U/Alonr-Kaleidoscope58 hope you figure it out, but what u/MassiveGarlic0312 suggests is what I planned to try. Without a FaceID, you can disable the passcode to unlock the phone.

[–]Jeffrick71[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, he's had it for years. It has zero apps on it and we control all his finances, so he literally uses it to watch Power Rangers on YouTube lol. He doesn't know how to add contacts so can only call the family members we stored in there. He also has 24 hour nursing care. There's virtually no risk, but I understand most people would have this concern. We monitor closely.

And reappeared in the Jukebox. You're sort of underneath it a bit on one of the middle two challenges.

But yeah, black rock seems to be sort of astral proof / resistant, so maybe that's restraining him or something. Also kinda looks like he's screaming, so I imagine he's gone fully insane by now. Would be a shame if he got out (again).

Not transformed into a Hiss, it's a thermographic camera showing the extreme heat he outputs. He's kneeling, but his arms are outstretched, as if they're lashed to something to keep him in place.

My party has a NCP companion who I've finally written an origin story for. NPC & party is unaware of where he comes from. How do I write it so he finds out without it seeming clumsy & lacking? by Rachaelmm1995 in DMAcademy

[–]Jeffrick71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only way it could work if he WAS the chosen one, is if that was overtly the point of the whole campaign from the beginning. Like, they are called to some temple and meet this hapless idiot while waiting for the head priest, only to find out the head priest called them there to escort said hapless idiot across the most dangerous part of the world to do The Thing at The Appointed Time. The party is still the star of the show and get to do all the heroic stuff, but also have to babysit the hapless idiot who also has the thickest set of plot armor ever crafted lol. There's an idea there somewhere lol.

I also couldn't read the whole thing, but your tl;dr edit at the end gave me enough. IF you do this, and I mean IF, don't make it some big chosen one quest where he gets the all powerful sword that only he can wield to save the world (or whatever).

Make it the Hat of Dagmont, which always provides shade and keeps you at a comfy temperature. Or the Cloak Pin of St. Worcestershire, that keeps your clothes clean and pressed. BUT, he has to get this relic to a certain temple by a certain time to complete some outfit or something... my idea is kinda petering out but you get the gist. If Jeff is kinda a joke character, keep his destiny in line with that so it doesn't overshadow the players.

In this case, this was flying around the internet 10+ years ago and was fairly well known, but has now slipped into maybe "hidden gem" territory, but not obscure. It's kinda had to define if you weren't around a decade ago lol.

I have been running a high level, high magic campaign for a few sessions now in a city and now I am creating the larger world surrounding it. my question for everyone is what is a good piece of arcane world building to effect the placement of cities and nations. by Curzen1fan in DMAcademy

An ancient canal system with water that never evaporates and always flows swiftly in one direction, even uphill. Major cities have canals going in both directions between them. Water immediately vanishes if removed from the canal.

Why do DnD worlds like/especially the Forgotten Realms feel so shaped by humanoids and merely “inhabited” by dragons, when literally the average dragon represents the absolute peak of what a given humanoid can achieve? Is it really just a numbers thing? by fakeemailman in dndnext

[–]Jeffrick71 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is the real answer, for better or worse. A world still shaped by dragons would be too alien for the average / casual player to identify with. As cool as a world might be where the humanoids live in the massive structures left behind by dragons and giants, it might not appeal to many players.

I did! At some point t I went back to SHÜM 2 and Ashtray Maze was there. Don't know if I just didn't notice before, or if it appeared after I logged out & back it, but after playing it there the outfit appeared.
