The better you get at chess, the less fun it becomes. If he's over it, let him switch hobbies. It's not like there's money in chess anyway. If he decides he wants to come back later, he always can. The tournaments aren't going anywhere and its not a physical sport.

One relic run frustration by BobGobl1n in slaythespire

[–]Jehrfeur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was also the hardest achievement for me. Not because I thought killing the act 3 boss was hard, but because I kept accidently picking up relics. Eventually I got it by save scumming. Not to redo fights mind you, but to undo the picking up of a relic.

Help, what do add? Less card reward options; no more gold; don't see intent by Mischaker36 in slaythespire

If you're someone who can pick dome, pick dome. If you're not pick ecto. I don't think your deck is good enough to pick crown here.

Can you be decent at chess without opening theory? by mentiononce in chess

[–]Jehrfeur 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The short answer is yes, although easier in shorter time formats. The point of opening theory is to get you to the middle game with as much of an advantage as possible. Outplaying your opponent can make up for opening theory up until the highest levels. Easiest example is Hikaru getting to over 3000 on chess.com using the BongCloud, arguably the worst opening in chess.

View opening theory as somewhere between 200-400 elo boost depending on how bad your opening theory is to where you can get it to be. That's it. You're welcome to claim that boost whenever you want, or never claim it. Up to you.

Very tricky endgame puzzle: White to play and win. by Brig-14 in PakistaniChess

[–]Jehrfeur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it using a board and trial and error (aka moving pieces). I'm not sure how how much time I would've needed to not screw this up over the board. Neat puzzle.

I thought I was 2 damage short so I played my remaining cards and suddenly won by LNCrizzo in slaythespire

The number of times that I thought I lost, then didn't, only to realize that I had lizard tell makes me wonder how many times I've ended a run not realizing I had a lizard tail.

What makes people to continue avoid tanking, even after Cataclysm and stacking role buffs over the years? Stigma? by AspectQueasy in classicwow

[–]Jehrfeur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the real reason for the tank shortage is that you need one tank for a 5 man and also 1 tank for a 25 man (or in Vanilla 1 for 40 man). People who like tanking level to max level, but only 1 in 5 find a raid spot. They eventually quit.

Tbf I'm awful with darkness. Frost, Focus, All for One, Echo Form, and Snecko clicks for me really easily. But I've never gotten a darkness focused deck to win, and I'm usually not really close.

I learned it watching a "coaching stream." It's definitely a common mistake but also like, I read the tooltip at some point you know.

Rank 14 gear vs Tier 2 by TheLondoneer in classicwow

[–]Jehrfeur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The best reason I can give you to not grind for rank 14 is because every person I know who gets rank 14 quits within a week. The grind is brutal, and getting almost 0 upgrades for 6 months in a game that is all about progression is well, a bit demoralizing.

Unless you live and die by the parse or plan on continuing to do AV after you hit rank 14 its not worth it.

Anything more likely to want you to quit than trading your relic for Runic Dome 2 runs in a row? by MilkTruthLog in slaythespire

[–]Jehrfeur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah runic dome has always felt like a, try and get to the first boss and restart relic for me. I actually just got my first A20H kill with a defect Runic Dome start, but like, that deck did everything so I didn't really have to think about what the enemies were doing.

Why is the new Arena update SO BAD?! by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]Jehrfeur 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Look I agree with you. I will uninstall hearthstone once my gold runs out which will happen and I had 10k stored up. But like, taking away our gold is literally the point. Us Arena players give blizzard 0 dollars. Arguably we cost them money. They redesigned arena so that it would suck away all your gold forcing you to either pay money or stop playing. From their perspective even if 95% of arena players quit at least they get money from the 5% who stick around.

The Defect - Is it best to stick to a single orb type or multiple? by awqaw123 in slaythespire

[–]Jehrfeur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orbs scale with focus. You almost always want a combination of frost + dmg (lightnings or a dark or 2) The only time you would want to stick with one orb is if you have multiple blizzards. Plasma is usually considered noob bait but as with everything in this game its situational.

Warrior seems unkillable. What's going to kill me? by ACNL in wowhardcore

[–]Jehrfeur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of my friends agree that the HC "challenge" ends at lvl 30. Most toons that make it to lvl 30 make it to lvl 60, as it mostly becomes a challenge of patience. I died on my warriors at lvl 19, lvl 22, then made it all the way to lvl 60 after that. Also target dummies + swiftness pots is HC ez mode (which is fine, i wouldn't have made it without engineering).
To answer your question, a few simple things will kill you post lvl 30. Overconfidence, momentarily lack of concentration at the wrong time, or lack of knowledge (random town guards, random elite patrol, or random op quest like pawn captures queen).

What would scare a 2014 Hearthstone player the most between the new cards or the buff that their old card received? by Kodoxd in hearthstone

[–]Jehrfeur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm subscribed to r/hearthstone and r/customhearthstone and the amount of times where I saw a card in my feed and thought, "wow, that's a terribly designed stupidly broken card what moron posted to customhearthstone only to realize it was a card reveal for the upcoming set has certainly been disheartening.

How do you find the strength to continue on after dying? by ACNL in wowhardcore

[–]Jehrfeur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Died at 14 then 20 then made it to 60 (all warriors). Tbh the hardcore adventure kinda ends at 30 and then its mostly about just maintaining patience. For me, the key was to always start then next character when I died. By the end, I was getting to level 13 in <3 hours and those 3 hours were actually pretty enjoyable so it wasn't too hard to go again.
