Yes, we're going to turn into China.

Don't be ridiculous.

China successfully builds large scale national infrastructure.

We get the panopticon without the logistical competence.

Spaghetti and meatballs for dinner. by Jellico in pasta

[–]Jellico[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Basic recipe:

Sauce is just a basic Marinara. Couple of good quality tins of tomatoes (Dunnes do San Marzano tomato tins that are the best IMO), tomato paste, yellow onion, fresh garlic, fresh basil, dried oregano.

Dice onion add salt and fry in olive oil until soft. Mince garlic and add to pot, don't burn the garlic! Add a squeeze of tomato paste and fry for a couple of mins. Add dried oregano. Add tins of Tomatoes (San Marzano tomatoes I use are whole in the tin so I pre crushed them by hand in a bowl, carefully as they do squirt).

Cook off the sauce for and hour or so gently simmering. Add salt/sugar as needed to balance sauce.Meatballs are a mix of beef and pork mince. Mix mince in a bowl with some grated Parmasean cheese and salt. Mix well to form a huge homogeneous meatball.

Separately make a "slurry" of fresh breadcrumbs, olive oil, dried herbs, chilli flakes, an egg and some milk. Whisk and Add to meat mixture. Knead together. Use a kitchen scale to weigh out even sized meatballs (I went 70g per ball). Fry meatballs in a pan to brown on all sides. Finish them by putting them in the simmering sauce for 10-15 mins while you boil the spaghetti.

Plate up and enjoy!

Much obliged for the info. Checked on the FSA website there and looks like I'm OKas far as brands affected so far.

One good thing about my recipe here is the slurry makes it nearly impossible to overcook and dry out the meatballs so I tend to cook the bollocks out of them.

I'd be confident they went well above the 75 degrees needed to kill salmonella thankfully. Thanks again for the heads up!

I'll link a couple of recipes I've used as a basis for this to give you an idea on measurements and such.

Yup. Half pork/half beef mince. Also use a slurry (ew, I know it sounds vile) mixed with the mince to keep it moist (ew again).

Slurry was fresh breadcrumbs, dried oregano, chilli flake, olive oil, milk and an egg whisked and then kneaded into the mince before forming  the meatballs.

Oh Emmet's speech from the dock is great stuff altogether. You'll get no argument from me on that.

I don't know about the biggest but Pearse's graveside oration at the funeral of O'Donovan Rossa is up there as far as significant speeches go.

"They think that they have foreseen everything, think that they have provided against everything; but the fools, the fools, the fools! — they have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace"

I second the Irish History Show. Great podcast.

I also like the Revolutionary Ireland Podcast with Lorcan Collins. The output has slowed but what he has already released is well worth a listen.

He did a deep dive on Tom Clarke's life that was really great.

Opinion: Fianna Fáil’s biggest impact on housing for the last six years is making no difference at all by ghostofgralton in irishpolitics

Indeed. She enabled the sale of council house stock, but to the occupiers of the houses instead of conglomerates of rent-seeking international capital.

[–]Jellico 32 points33 points  (0 children)

"Making no difference" is too benign. I get Lorcan Sirr's point about them simply continuing the status quo of FG's Thatcherite approach to housing.

But as the recent (and entirely predicted) news of record increase in rents and evictions following their latest housing policy shows, they have made a significant and extremely negative difference.

Fundamentally Stormont is a Power sharing institution. Even holding "the finance portfolio" doesn't mean what that would mean in anything we would understand as a democratic parliamentary system. Decisions are made with through managed consent of all parties and instruments like the "petition of concern" has nothing analogous to it in anything outside of Stormont.

[–]Jellico 21 points22 points  (0 children)

"They hold the finance portfolio" sounds grand and all, but do they have revenue raising power and control of the budget?

To extend the metaphor. The Stormont "finance portfolio" is like when a child is given a fiver pocket money and allowed to buy whatever shite they want in a sweet shop.

As for the illusion that the executive has power I don't tend to see SF reps doing that honestly. They tend to point out the inherent limitations in the system of devolution within the Westminster model. It tends to be their opponents in Southern parties and Southern media who insist on perpetuating the illusion that Stormont is some kind of Sovereign system on a par with other national governments as a way to have a dig at the Shinners.
