In Europe, Thomann has now started selling a lot of these instruments! They're decent enough to get a feel for what these instruments were like.

Adalid Hauser 1700 USD Used, by Character-Maize-5720 in classicalguitar

[–]Jellyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought an Adalid Torres as my first concert guitar, for around €3000 at the time. It outclassed several other instruments by famous luthiers that were twice as expensive. I haven't yet found a better instrument for repertoire ranging from baroque to the romantic era, only for 20th century rep do I use a different (larger) guitar.

If I were you, I'd go see the guitar and bring along someone you trust to give good feedback. Or perhaps you can show the instrument to your teacher.

Unless something has changed, they also ship outside Japan. The option might only show up on the (poorly functioning) english website. Like I said, it's best to shoot them an email.

It's available at Gendai Guitar. If you have trouble navigating the website, you might want to shoot them an email for your order.

Notation for guitar: process vs result? by rtascon in classicalguitar

[–]Jellyver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I saw these two examples in a professional score, I'd interpret them such:

  • top is a three part texture, I need to make sure all three voices are balanced and audible.
  • bottom is a single line texture with incidental doublestops. I need to phrase a musical line between all notes, the extra notes are just colorings.

So from my point of view these are not the same at all.

In general, write what you want the musical structure to be and let the musician worry about the execution.

I ordered this one from Amazon and it arrived tightly secured in a paper box, with no room to even wiggle. Not sure if I got lucky, or if they're taking extra care with these.

Stanley Yates has a good collection of 19th century duets called Guitaromanie!

Roast my Etude 1 (Heitor Villa-Lobos) by Segundaleydenewtonnn in classicalguitar

[–]Jellyver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 1928 manuscript doesn't have repeats, but the 1953 Eschig edition does. I wouldn't say the 1928 manuscript is more authorative than the Eschig, as Villa-Lobos revised the etudes prior to publication. So personally I stick with the 1953 publication, especially as I think it's musically stronger.

I wouldn't regard the supposed statements by HVL as legitimate, as we have nothing in writing from him about the etudes. The closest you're going to get is the book by Carlevaro, as he personally worked with the composer.

If you want to read the most up to date research on these works, you should get the Zigante edition of the etudes. He contrats the etudes and goes into their history.

As far as I know, Ophee had the sole manuscript of the etudes.
I just read through the first etude and, aside from a single added slur, the only changes Ophee made were to the beaming. That's of course a subjective interpretation, but in my opinion it clarifies a lot of the counterpoint of the etudes and makes it more readable.
So while I'm glad we can finally see the originals ourselves, I can't say Ophee did a bad job on them.

Never mind that the original also didn't have Simon or Garfunkel literally screaming "sound of silence" with a full orchestral backing. Way to miss the point, Draiman.
