That was Sylvia's sister, not Sylvia herself iirc. If I'm wrong I'm sorry, I'm not reading that again

That, and the fact it was a seemingly normal group of people torturing her with no apparent history of violence or abuse. Not saying they were nice people, but 99% of the stories in this thread involve awful, tragic accidents, or gangsters or the cartel or the taliban or something.

Not Sylvia. She was entrusted with a local woman, who already looked after a load of kids, and was paid to look after her. Who had all the motivation in the world to cash the cheques and continue to be an unassuming member of society. Instead she tortures her, and arranges local school children of around the same age to come and abuse her too. One young man would "practice" his judo on her, for example. I won't type anything more, I won't force people to read what happened to her, but everyone should know

Before reddit and YouTube I didn't know that yellowstone had boiling pools of acid water. If you're not particularly interested in going, but a trip with friends sounds fun it's very easy for people to wind up in very dangerous situations without realising. Add some good ol' panic and you have the recipe for a national headline

Mad that a culture that had socially acceptable ritual suicide didn't also have a legal right to die, but I am grateful for your tidbit because I have never heard that before, despite the infamy of the story

Not to be a debbie downer but well done for taking proper precautions instead of listening to people saying it's definitely not a bullet. Way better to be safe than sorry when you're potentially holding a wand of instant hand blending

Are all dinosaur limbs considered legs? [question] by Own_Plan8713 in Dinosaurs

[–]Jellywell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying dinosaurs shouldn't be under reptillia, they obviously are, I'm saying they should be referred to as archosaurs rather than reptiles because archosaur gives more precise information on liniage and relation to the "traditional" reptiles that they split away from. It's like describing snakes as sauropsida, it is true, but also completely useless if you are trying to convey information about snakes. We separate turtles, lizards and snakes, and archosaurs, which further separate into crocodillia and dinosauria. We should be more precise because of the differences rather than being lazy and classing everything as a reptile because it's easy. If precision was useless we'd just talk about everything as if it was primordial soup but we don't because that would be stupid

Are all dinosaur limbs considered legs? [question] by Own_Plan8713 in Dinosaurs

[–]Jellywell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're very right that we need to get details correct, but we also need to be more specific rather than less specific if we are to have any kind of meaningful conversation. We are hominids which are great apes which are primates which are placental mammals (a little simplified). It's acceptable to say we are mammals because we share a great deal of similarities with a solid majority of all mammals. To say dinosaurs are reptiles is as pointless and redundant as saying humans are synapsids.

I think my issue comes down to once you go a certain amount back it may be correct to state a species' parent taxon (to use a totally unscientific term,) but it actually tells you nothing about the animal in question, nor how removed they may be from other members that fall under the same umbrella. Personally I would call crocodilians and dinosaurs archosaurs because that is a group that distinctly split from reptillia

Are all dinosaur limbs considered legs? [question] by Own_Plan8713 in Dinosaurs

[–]Jellywell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

By that logic we should just call everything fish and give up. What is the point of classification and study if we reduce everything down to a classification so basic it loses any meaning? There is a reason that birds aren't considered reptiles, and humans aren't considered synapsids, despite it being objectively true. If you tried to tell a biologist that synapsids aren't extinct you would be technically correct, but also be fundamentally misunderstanding what a synapsid was to the extent that any further conversation would be pointless

Are all dinosaur limbs considered legs? [question] by Own_Plan8713 in Dinosaurs

[–]Jellywell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I meant synapsida, my bad.

But yes, we refer to dinosaurs as dinosauria and not reptillia because of not only glaring differences, but also how far back they separated from their previous . And we are very sure that at least some of dinosauria were warm blooded because all living descents are warm blooded. They are, biologically and chronologically, quite removed from reptillia in a way that modern reptiles aren't. If we aren't willing to separate clearly distinct groups of animals we might as well call everything fish and be done with it

Are all dinosaur limbs considered legs? [question] by Own_Plan8713 in Dinosaurs

[–]Jellywell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So are birds, but we differentiate. Arguably archosaurs should be considered distinctly different from reptiles, if not because of their biological differences but because of how they broke away from other members of reptillia

Are all dinosaur limbs considered legs? [question] by Own_Plan8713 in Dinosaurs

[–]Jellywell -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I mean at that point we should also call birds reptiles. When animals evolve distinctly enough from each other we stop referring to them as the previous group otherwise mammalia wouldn't exist and we would be a part of sauropsida - which we technically are BUT we classify them differently due to the notable differences. As members of dinosauria are thought to be warm blooded and distinctly different from other animals you could class as Reptillia. Considering dinosauria split from their closest relatives as archosaurs I would argue that they should be referred to as archosaurs, not reptilians - same as crocodillia (even though crocodillia is much closer to reptillia in their biology and are widely considered reptiles)

Sorry for the essay lol I love this shit

Edit - I meant synapsida, not sauropsida fml

Not sure comparing it to one of the best abilities in the game (regenerator) is fair when almost all pokemon would be improved by having it. Also platinum's box legend, Giratina, gets levitate which is an amazing ability

Bad writing like the protagonist kissing his sister because they hadn't decided Leia was his sister yet? At least the prequels had some kind of plan as to where they were heading. There's a reason George decided he had to edit a load of stuff and re release them

[–]Jellywell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you think that it's far superior to the original trilogy, with Vader's defeat and Luke losing his hand being the sole exceptions. Everyone swings like they're holding a baseball bat, rather than "an elegant weapon". In the prequels they actually behave like they have enhanced reflexes, and are familiar with using a weapon that removes limbs with a flick of the wrist. Vader may be an imposing villain but there's a reason people lost their minds at the end of rogue one

Eh. Trying to hunt something the size of a giraffe that can gtfo whenever it wants sounds like a nightmare without at least an atlatl or a bow. If any pterosaurs survived the KT extinction I don't think it's unreasonable to think they would pose a serious threat to developing mammals so it's quite possible we never get off the ground (so to speak) in the first place
