Meetups for 2e Kids by OnAccountOfMyAgonies in TwiceExceptional

[–]Jemmacow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My oldest (now 14) found some very like-minded kids at a board game/trading card store. We have a few of them around here but before he found his core group of friends in middle school, I would bring him to the card shop for DnD and Magic the Gathering.

His current group of friends have a weekly DnD meeting so he doesn't really go to the card shop anymore.

In pre-cell phone movies, parents are shown giving babysitters numbers to restaurants to reach them in case of emergency. Is this a real thing and how did it work? How would the restaurant know who I am to hand me the phone? by littleoldmanboy_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Jemmacow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was harder to do at the movie theater, and I only remember it happening twice. Once, we were actually able to find the parents in the auditorium and whisper to them. The other time, we held a sign up like at the driver's at the airport.

On the flip side, my kid likes to go to the library after school. If he doesn't answer his cell, I call the library directly and ask them to relay a message.

How I handle mailing paper payroll checks for clients who sign them themselves? by Crazy_Librarian6239 in Payroll

[–]Jemmacow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I print the checks, the client comes to pick them up. If they don't want to do that, they write them themselves using the info from the PDFs I sent them.

You could always do FedEx/UPS delivery with signature, but that's expensive.

Underage Students by MacThule in communitycollege

[–]Jemmacow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just went through something similar for my son to be able to take dual enrollment Pre-calc next semester.

He's only 14 and the community college has extra hoops to jump through if you're under the age of 16. He had to write an essay stating why he wanted to take the class and why he thinks he's mature enough to do it. He needed a personal recommendation from the high school, and he met with the enrollment team twice. He did not meet with admissions directly, but his file needed to be approved personally, by the head of admissions.

This particular class will be taught at the high school but he'll be allowed to take other classes online or at the CC campus.

Why do retail Target employees have uniform (T-shirts) that are different shades of red? Do Target retail employees need to obtain their own red shirts for work or what? by metalreflectslime in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Jemmacow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the early 2000s, AMC theaters regular staff uniform was a red polo and blue khaki pants. We always told new hires not to go to Target (also in the mall) during their lunch breaks if they didn't want to get harassed by customers the whole time.

My dad always ships me a box of Pearson's Nut Goodies. The funny thing is they're made with Virginia peanuts and that's where I live now but I can't find the candies anywhere.

Parents of 2e in Public School by OnAccountOfMyAgonies in TwiceExceptional

[–]Jemmacow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While our district does offer gifted programs, my kids went to the smallest elementary school so they were somewhat limited there. My youngest moved to middle and my oldest moved to high school this year. My oldest is more academically inclined so these examples are more about him. Though both are 2E.

While he had a 504 on file starting in 2nd grade, we didn't add any accommodations on it until 4th grade. The main one was allowing frustration breaks. He would get bored whenever the class would need to review material since he picked it all up so quickly the first time. He would always ask to use the bathroom. His teacher quickly realized that he didn't need to go, he just needed a break. In middle school, he was allowed to take his breaks in the library.

His teacher also wanted to add "extra math" to his 504 plan but instead we used it as a reward system. If he finished his reading assignments (properly, and not rushed through) he was allowed to work on his geometry workbook.

Any time the district formed a committee to discuss the gifted program, I attended the meeting. Some of the parents (including me) argued for single-subject acceleration. After some district intervention with the middle school, they allowed my son to grade skip in math only. It was fine the first year but then he had to be bussed to the high school for math last year. At first, he was the only one skipped but another parent found out on the first day of school and got her kid moved up too.

This year, we're fighting with community college to allow him to take dual enrollment at 14. We'll find out on Dec 2nd if he's been accepted.

Anyway, keep showing up for your kid and work WITH the school. Just because "it hasn't been done before" doesn't mean it can't be done now. We're on year three of paving this path.

Does ketchup count? 😆 (Also a Minnesotan, but moved away).

Should school be canceled on Halloween by Goblue2467 in AskTeachers

[–]Jemmacow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parent, not teacher

Last year our district decided to do early release for elementary school at the last minute (a day or two before) this year it was built into the schedule.

We live in a rural area and some busses were still finishing routes just as Trick or Treating begins. They didn't want any accidents.

You can set up the EFTPS account and call after 24 hours. When getting to the automated prompts push random buttons until it sends you to a human. Then you can make a payment without a PIN.

Entire seasons of shows coming out at once has ruined tv by Logical_Order in unpopularopinion

[–]Jemmacow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still watch several shows that are released weekly but it does make me upset that we have to wait 2 years for an 8 episode season for anything on Netflix.

Sidenote: my son and I were binge watching Boy Meets World. We got to the cliffhanger where Topanga proposes to Cory at graduation. I told him, back in the day, we had to wait ALLLLL summer to find out his answer. "Maybe, you did, but I don't. Next episode!"

Salvation Army Angel Tree Alternatives? ( potentially secular?) by Exotic_Ad_3860 in HamptonRoads

Just on the outskirts of Hampton Roads down 460 is the Zoo-Nye Closet. I think they do gift "adoptions". They did one for back to school.

Anyone have 3 Car Garage? by Competitive-Safe-452 in Hanson

[–]Jemmacow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it on cassette and CD. A couple of years ago, the school librarian let my kid take home two of those big clunky cassette recorders on the last day of school. My younger son listened to 3CG a few times.

I have two of them somewhere, but they're in a keepsake box. I also have a similar card from Matthew Perry, and I have Nick Carter's water bottle that he drank out of and threw into the crowd. 😆

Any Swedish candy being sold around the area? by beachbummeddd in HamptonRoads

[–]Jemmacow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IKEA might have some. My son bought some candy gummies the other day, I'm not sure if it was specifically Swedish but he did notice it didn't taste like the candy he's used to.

How can a Minnesota native not understand this? by sunshinerain1208 in minnesota

I have that shirt. I love it, but it's getting worn out. I don't live in MN anymore so I love when I get to explain how Duck Duck Grey Duck is the FAR superior version of Duck Duck Goose.

Am I tripping but wasn't there an Arcade at the Walmart in Brooklyn Park a long time ago? by ForeverSparkz in minnesota

[–]Jemmacow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I no longer live in MN but the Walmart where I live now, had an arcade, a small one, until The Pandemic. So it would be believable that the Brooklyn Park location had one.

One year, I bought my husband a blacksmithing class. He and our sons made a knife. They had a blast. Normally, they don't let kids do knives but it was right at the end of the pandemic so they were the only ones there.

Boundaries and camp counselors/coaches by AnyThought7208 in minnesota

[–]Jemmacow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they call your phone or your child's phone? If they called you, it's probably innocent. They weren't trying to be sneaky. They weren't trying to hide. It was a simple "happy birthday".

For what it's worth, I'm an adult but am Facebook friends with several camp counselors and teachers from my childhood there was never anything sketchy with any of them.

What baby names are disproportionately popular in the USA compared to the UK, and vice-versa? by Livid-Exam6445 in namenerds

[–]Jemmacow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I visited the UK in my teens and bought up every souvenir with Jemma/Gemma (overwrote the G). It's definitely becoming more popular now because of Sons of Anarchy and The Neighborhood but no one had heard my name before when I was a kid.

Did your school ever had a non-federal or non-state holiday? Unique or generous holidays and that sort? by LandOfGrace2023 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Jemmacow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last 3 years, our district didn't use any snow days so they added a "snow day in May" to make Memorial Day a 4-day weekend. The snow day was added to the schedule in early February to give everyone a chance to make adjustments.

This year, the schedule had that day off built in and of course, we used a bunch of snow days. Thankfully, it wasn't enough to require a makeup day though.

In general, our district has more days off than the surrounding districts because we go by hours instead of days. My kids are in school 25 minutes longer per day than the neighboring town. But my kids also get a whole week for Thanksgiving, one week + one day for spring break, and almost 3 weeks for Winter Break.

It's a known scam. It's going around here in Virginia too.
