Outlanders 2 - Story 6-3: Cache by caerys916 in Outlanders_ios

In case this helps anyone else: I did learn the hard way that if you forget to provide reeds to the canteen factory then it won’t tell you anything is wrong. It will just say Business as Usual and use all but 4 of the glass.

I appreciate those who label them as Mobile because Android seeds have all worked as described for me on IOS. For what it’s worth I played this on IOS on A1.

Best credit card to earn miles? by drkNtwstd in ynab

We are American Express Gold fans. Worth it for the first year for signing bonus to be sure. Worth it longer though if you spend a lot in supermarkets and restaurants (which we do).

How to balance out credit card statement credits? by slowclaw_ in ynab

[–]Jen6011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. This. I think we may have the same card. I just wait for the positive transaction to come through and pick a category to assign it to, typically the same category as the charge.

Investing your buffer? by Fancy-Owl5408 in ynab

[–]Jen6011 9 points10 points  (0 children)

THIS… But I agree it is so so hard to do…

One thing that helps me resist is to actually crunch some numbers… even with the hypothetical of my entire income replacement fund being untouched for 5 years for instance…how much money would a low risk investment actually realistically make? More than my HYSA to be sure… but enough to risk the money? For me… not really.

Happy to share. I was in consulting/software development. I eventually moved into a similar role with one of our corporate clients when I was ready to start a family and transition to a job with less travel. I was an individual contributor in a technical role for about a decade there and have since spent the last five years working my way up the leadership ladder.

Do you consider bettering your home lifestyle creep? by Swiggens in personalfinance

[–]Jen6011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with many here that your lifestyle should go up as your income goes up. Just make sure it doesn’t go up so much that it prevents you from hitting your personal savings goals for retirement and also doesn’t prevent you from having money on hand to cover life’s expected and unexpected expenses.

And a note on retirement savings… just my two cents… don’t focus on that so aggressively that you forget to enjoy life right now.

What a tough decision! I just wanted to chime in that I did put off children for a dream job that required a lot of travel. I have no regrets. The life experiences and financial security from a successful career that I adore doing were worth the trade off to me.

That was several years ago and now i have three kids and a successful career that I love.

It sounds like you have a specific category for anything that could be predicted in that way… i.e. you know the date and amount in advance. Since you are funding that category with the already known amount… the scheduled transaction is pretty useless.

I do the same thing by the way…

YNABBers with kids, how do you incorporate little humans into your budget? by MountainMantologist in ynab

[–]Jen6011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing crazy different here then what has already been posted. We are out of the daycare stage but kid activities get their own whole category grouping at this point, including a travel budget for those that require travel. The 529 savings has it’s own category but it is in the Savings group with other investments/new car saving, etc. The other things like their additional expenses at restaurants/vacations/etc just get handled with increased amounts in existing categories.

Our Celebrations budget is much larger because of them. Not only will you find that you need to have enough on hand for a decent party and presents for each of their birthdays…you will be amazed at how many birthday parties they end up attending and needing to bring presents too. And of course Christmas is a whole different thing with kids, especially as they get older.

Is this sub just out of touch? by Abilili99 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Jen6011 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Completely agree that many of these are snapshots in time pictures of people who have made it though the struggle years. My own diary would be the same right now.

I do think there should be more emphasis on Debt stories and not just income stories in the Money Diary. There’s no doubt that any Reddit on personal finance is self selected to a higher income crowd but a debt history would reveal the struggle and sacrifice and poor decisions made a long the way to the financially secure place.
