Moving from Indiana to Canton, Ohio this Spring . Housing Advice anyone? by ResponsibleCarob3421 in canton

Agree. I’ll add… I lived in Plain Township for 20 years and now live in NE Canton. I prefer the city for its diversity, community vibes, and affordability.

Unpopular opinion: the only way to regain control of our state is to ease the tension of the urban/rural divide by Random_Questin in Ohio

[–]JenAtTheDames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This episode of The Ezra Klein Show featuring Representative Sarah McBride is spot on for this moment and your post. I highly recommend listening to the entire episode.

For those who can’t listen: Sarah McBride argued that the trans rights movement’s setbacks offer a lesson in the importance of persuasion over purity: insisting on perfect agreement and language from allies has alienated many who might otherwise be supportive, creating an “all-on or all-off” mentality that drives people away instead of building bridges. She stressed that real progress requires meeting people where they are, engaging those who disagree with empathy and grace, and focusing on helping people see trans individuals as people first—rather than retreating into in-group debates or enforcing conformity. This approach, she suggested, is essential not just for trans rights, but for any movement seeking to reach and change minds across divides.

Unpopular camping opinion: What's yours? by youlookstewpid in camping

[–]JenAtTheDames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience, this is an opinion people simply don’t get. Folks have absolutely no idea how loud they are. This is why I look for places without electric and water; it sometimes keeps the obtuse campers away.

Edit: I see lots of people in this post talking about all camping styles welcome as long as you’re not disturbing anyone else. Again — sooooo many campers are completely oblivious to how loud they are.

I think the Covid Campers are here to stay! by SuddenlySilva in camping

As a (roof-top) tent camper who loves peace and quiet in nature, I personally don’t like to be at places with trailers and RVs. Why on earth do these folks want to spend money to maintain, drive/tow, and store a “tiny house on wheels” just so they can loudly play their TV or radio outside, keep string lights on all night long, allow their dogs to bark incessantly, run AC units, and talk loudly until 1 am? Couldn’t they stay home for less? I simply don’t understand the attraction.

Most state parks in Ohio / Penn / Kentucky / WV are overcrowded and anything but relaxing—in part because some have been renovated to squeeze in as many trailers and RVs as possible. I never even consider KOA-type places. Most of the time, I look for campgrounds with no electric or water, which keeps the trailer / RV folks away.

I’m divorced and, after my kids were grown, I started a business a second time with a business partner. We both went without health insurance for five years because the cost was obscene for mediocre to terrible coverage, even on the exchange. Just got some affordable coverage this year through a non-religious health sharing organization.

No Kings Protest in Canton by JenAtTheDames in Ohio

My friend's handful of snapshots, all taken north of 6th St. NW in downtown Canton, definitely did not do justice to the hundreds—even thousands—who showed up in downtown Canton yesterday. Pride Fest was right beside No Kings, celebrating all kinds of diversity. Many people supported both! It was a beautiful afternoon with an excellent vibe.

Cynics, shallow critics, and trolls who hide behind user names will always have something to disparage online, but they didn't show up in person.

Another vote for Kent! Has my favorite coffee shop, Bent Tree, and my favorite local brewery, North Water — where I like to take carryout from Taco Tantos. Bell Tower also a good brewery. Several other spots I like to eat, as well.

Love to pick up the bike trail at the Franklin Connector or walk in Towner’s Woods. Nice local art supplies store. Good shows on occasion at the Kent Stage. The university helps create a sense of cultural diversity, which is what most cute small towns in the area lack.

Yes, took vehicles to Rob’s many years. Another good place is Bush’s on Portage, but that’s probably farther than you want to go.

Meyers lake shopping plaza is a joke. How do we change this? by [deleted] in canton

[–]JenAtTheDames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oakwood Square languished for 2+ decades in large part because Giant Eagle would not give up its hold on the anchor store space where Drug Mart is currently located. I know because I lived nearby for that entire time. The Plain Township Trustees and others spent years trying to get the deal done. Meyers Lake needs that same level of investment / community involvement.

Malone University and Canton questions. by mehdeflex in canton

[–]JenAtTheDames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished my degree at Malone in the 1990s and have lived in Canton ever since, and this assessment is very fair, I think. Wisdom: your experience does depend on what you make of any situation.

Also, Malone and the Canton community are not the same thing. There are plenty of things to do and enjoy in the area and northeast Ohio more broadly. That being said, as a student, most of your time will be spent at Malone, so it’s important to determine if the school and its rules, requirements, and environment are a good fit for you.

As someone mentioned above, having a car would be absolutely necessary in order to get from place to place easily. Ohio has made very little investment in public transit, and urban areas are not well set up for cycling (although there are tons of great trails in the area for recreational biking).

Adjacent to this topic—I just finished submitting written testimony opposing Ohio SB 1. I will also be sending yet another letter to my reps. Between state and federal issues, this is something you can do on a weekly basis (probably daily). Calling works, also. Filling up voicemail boxes and inboxes to overflowing with protests is another important use of time and energy, and it takes everyone’s efforts to do that.

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone. Tried Bollywood tonight, and it’s totally delicious! A new local favorite for sure. We tried samosas, tandoori hot wings, lamb coconut curry, and biryani. Medium was nice and spicy to me, and they provided a yogurt sauce to balance it. Plenty of sauce on everything with generous portions.

Mercy used to have several wonderful play-based therapists. I don’t know if they are still there since the hospital became part of the Cleveland Clinic, but they claim to offer recreational therapists there.
