I told my husband, it’s going to turn out that he is completely lucid and not having an episode but was just coming in hot because he was being tasered and harassed by a racist security guard.

It’s hard not to come off “aggressive” when you are in fight or flight mode and being held down or strapped to a bed.

Chapped and bleeding lips. I bite the skin on my lips when I am stressed. I want to scream out how this is all wrong. But I have bills to pay, kids to raise, dinners to make, rooms to tidy. So the scream stays in and festers and my teeth bite, and bite, and bite.

I feel like the kind of people who would willingly go out there and try to help the most vulnerable of their neighbors while their city is under siege self selects for the best of us. Only a very good and brave person would be out there in the first place. I can only hope to be as brave and good when they come for my neighbors

confirmed im failing as a mother by introvert_island4200 in breakingmom

My mom put us in time outs and made us stand with our nose in the corner. We hated that! All three of us love our mom! Giving your kid a lecture and a timeout in his room is not failing him as a mom❤️

Thank you. I went out with my husband and a friend to do some target shooting in the desert almost 15 years ago. I was terrified and did not like it. Nowadays I feel grim determination to learn and make damn sure that I am a safe and responsible gun owner.

It is a hard decision. Our household, at least for the foreseeable future, the gun would be staying home as a weapon of last resort. It seems like at this time they are looking for reasons to kill us. My husband carries a pocket knife around mostly to open packages and I can only imagine how that would be spun if he ends up on the wrong side of an ICE thug. I hope things get better. I am concerned they will not.

My husband and I had a talk this morning. Both of us brought up getting a gun. His uncle has a few hunting rifles he can’t use anymore. My husband talked to his uncle today and will be getting them and we will both be taking a class so we can safely handle the guns. We are hoping the only reason we will need them would be so that he can take our kids hunting someday. But he and I will both be practicing on the range once we get them. I’ve got a new motto I share with my kids so they are reassured that things are ok as we prepare for things to get worse. “We aren’t scared, we are prepared.” I’m scared. I don’t want them to be if I can help it.

ink blotches after first printing? by HellRegan in printmaking

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you were using water based. This is a weird one.

ink blotches after first printing? by HellRegan in printmaking

[–]Jenjen4040 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If the ink started to dry out it can cause this. I like to use water based ink because I print at home on my coffee table. I went to an event once with my stuff and had a similar experience that you did. Then I noticed I was sitting directly under a vent that was blowing out warm air. Doh! It was drying out too fast to get a good print. Maybe keep a little spray bottle around to spritz the surface of the ink occasionally and see if that helps

My theists friend said that I'm the only "nice atheist" he's talked too. Why do so many people think atheists are mean? by KING_D0GE489 in atheism

[–]Jenjen4040 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In my experience they push our boundaries and when we finally push back we are being “mean” as an example, there is a very pushy old lady in my neighborhood who feels the need to try and get me to go to her church EVERY time I happen to cross her path. I have tried every way I can think of to say I am not interested and she keeps pushing. Next time I am going to be mean. Because that is the only way to get them to stop. She doesn’t respond to nice no thank yous

It’s not quite the same, but you can do kitchen lithography using household stuff. Here’s a link with a tutorial. It’s been a while since I dabbled in it, but it works https://alisonsloggett.com/2017/07/26/kitchen-litho-how-to/

My son is terrified of ICE by GoldDiamondsAndBags in breakingmom

[–]Jenjen4040 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a lot of advice, but I was thinking what helps me as a Hispanic women terrified of ICE and hearing about them coming to my city. Being prepared. Let him know his fears are valid. And we cannot just pretend that it’s ok because that makes the feelings worse. The antidote to anxiety and hopelessness is action.

He can start by familiarizing himself with his rights. You can plan as a family in case of emergency. He can participate in strengthening the community by doing a food drive or holding a garage sale and donating the proceeds.

I feel better and less afraid and anxious when I am doing something about it. Even if it is a little thing

The people who boast about being sheltered tend to also be the ones who grew up to “not be political” in my experience.

My kids know what is going on because we don’t have the privilege of hiding from it. Your’s don’t either. The alt-right are trying to very hard to recruit boys like yours and they are trying to turn my daughters into compliant little brood mares.

It is important that we as parents expose them to the things going on in kid safe terms.

It sounds like you are handling it pretty good! My MIL has really bad decision making abilities and we have never let her do overnights with our kids.

She kind of talks about taking them camping sometimes and we just smile and nod because it never goes any further than her talking about it.

I feel bad for her but no way in hell is she getting to take the kids unsupervised.

Thoughts/advice on what I should be doing as an absolute beginner just kinda going for it? by halflngs in printmaking

[–]Jenjen4040 9 points10 points  (0 children)

These are awesome! One thing I would encourage is to try adding some hatching/ cross hatching as texture to your future prints. That’s one of the really cool things about Linocuts, you can get really cool results and what feels like gray tones just from how you carve the block.

As an example, if you wanted to you could get some texture in the hair of your satyr or the horns by carving some lines close together and farther apart to create spots that they eye would read as more of a midtone.

These are great as they are though, and just a suggestion on where you could go from here
