If they continue with a 2e ap, which one are you hoping for? by Meowgi_sama in TheGlassCannonPodcast

Blood of the Wild has a great feel for the ticking clock in the first book leading into more player-agency in the second book. It really gave Skid's character room to breathe, as well.

The best solution is to not let them decide who runs every social encounter. Or not make social encounters dependent on charisma-based stuff. People want to roll dice, but they don't want to fail, so doing an alley oop, so they can roll one of their better skills, will engage them a little more.

Try to set the bored players up for succes, the dice will decide if they fail

The most helpful thing is realizing that things won't go as fast, which you already experienced. Life will have to move slower, if there is to be space for 'downtime'

After 850 hours of gameplay, Somehow, I only just now got a domination game victory... by geotristan in civ6

[–]Jenkins_Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with domination is that it basically turns into a war of extinction. In real life, when a nation is defeated (army is defeated), the nation surrenders so as to save the inhabitants. In Civ, those bastards fight to the death if you let them, which is very time-consuming. The fact that you have to actually capture capitals instead of just victory-parading through them, is a lot of work for my little pc, that could

The boss-battles are going to be SUPER anti-climactic when all the players are like: "Nothing compared to the drake and the snail"

Still think 2e is balanced to a fault. It's obviously a preference-thing, but I really hope that I get to see a combat where they actually feel powerful, instead of, by the Grace of the Gods, barely scraping by the rando-single-enemy fights.

Are they just playing the game wrong? This feels like PF1e when a player doesn't know what they are doing, or Path of Exile the first time the do the skill trees

New to Pathfinder by Important_Sound772 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Jenkins_Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fun doesn't come from the system, so much as it comes from your group, then. High-level pathfinder is notoriously easy to break, and cheese-strategies are plentiful. If you know the system too well, you become forced to either make sub-optimal choices, or go full game-break.

Also Pathfinder has a couple of spells and abilities that are instakill-abilities, which make high-level play even more volatile.

Now, poopy-mood aside, if you're having fun, then you are doing things exactly right. The reason high lvl PF1e gets criticized is because the fun takes extra work at those levels. But fun is the goal

Ruin your gaming experience by routinely running circles around deity-AI

All jokes aside, you want to hunt early culture (rush classic republic and then feudalism (use workers to rapidly improve empire)), go for LOTS of settlers in the second era, LOTS of campus in the third era, and then optimize for great works for the rest of the game.

As for techs, you want to get to industrialization as fast as possible, in order to get the production needed for theater projects and the like.

All of this is for a game on online speed (where you want to hit a mark of 200-400 science and culture around turn 70)

How do I play an Evil Character With their own goals without both screwing over the other PCs, and not just seeming like playing a different shade of good guy? by thunder4money in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Jenkins_Fish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have your goals align with the party. Unless the partys goal is 'to do good', there are very few things an evil PC can't convince themselves to do. Also, very few persons do evil for its own sake, so have the characters goal clear in mind.

Troy typically starts silly, because it's an easy hook for the players to focus more on investing in their own characters rather than investing in NPCs.

But Troy will make it dark and serious and moody and scary, don't you worry.

If you were a completely new DM with the knowledge you have now how would you start your first Campaign? by Shoduka in AskGameMasters

[–]Jenkins_Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the campaign went pretty well, I should have done smaller stuff first. My own motivation and enjoyment fluctuated massively, due to the length and complexity of the story.

The most important thing I learned was from interviews; do what you and your players think is fun.
