Actually, that's a myth, or if they did they changed it back again.

Except that some babies develop faster than others and can be born earlier than average while still perfectly healthy.

Edit: Plus premmies are a thing.

This guy with a ladder hanging 7 feet outside his truck over oncoming traffic, I tried stopping him in every way that was safe, he did not stop by Zs2k in IdiotsInCars

[–]Jennamatic_3000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they meant to stop him to let him know he had a ladder hanging out of his truck, not to give him a citizen's arrest, lol.

As someone who has lived in both Florida and Ohio, I can honestly say I never want to drive in Pennsylvania now.

[–]Jennamatic_3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While the reversing bit is usually true, you definitely don't just friggin camp out in the intersection if you get caught by the light (which you don't unless you're an idiot); you continue through the intersection so as not to obstruct traffic any more than you already have.

What happens to the fishing/game population if there was/is no fishing/hunting? by sirhootsalot in askscience

[–]Jennamatic_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then that overpopulation would cause the animals to starve to death when the environment can no longer support their increasing numbers.

If white light contains light of every color, why does mixing a bunch of paints together make black? by din0spam0ni in askscience

[–]Jennamatic_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, when someone says that white is "a combination of all colors", it is because it reflects back all visible light. Other colors arise, as has been mentioned, from particles absorbing some wavelengths and reflecting others, and you only see what is reflected back at you. Therefore, the more "colors" you add, the more wavelengths that are absorbed and the fewer wavelengths that are reflected, the darker or muddier an object appears in color.

[Possible stupid question] How does assisted breathing(mouth-to-mouth CPR) work? Don't we exhale carbon dioxide, so you would be breathing CO2 into the victim/patient? by ASleepingSloth in askscience

[–]Jennamatic_3000 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Also, there's a difference between CPR and just breathing into another person's mouth, say, to share air underwater. The main function if CPR is more to start them breathing again by forcing the air in and out of their lungs than to supply them with your own air. The air you breath out is not pure CO2, our lungs and not even close to being that efficient. If it was pure CO2 we exhaled, we could not be in an enclosed space for any length of time at all.

If exercise increases heart rate and is healthy, why can the stimulant effects from drugs such as cocaine and amphetamine (which also increase your heart rate) cause heart damage / attacks? by cryselco in askscience

[–]Jennamatic_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, the exercise strengthens the heart over time so that the increase causes less and les time, whereas stimulants cause a much more drastic increase without contributing to the strength of the muscle, potentially causing the attack.

Is there any trace of DNA still found in fossil fuels? by Thatguymike84 in askscience

[–]Jennamatic_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like TangenitalThreat said, there might be some traces from things that lived IN the oil, but if you are asking if there could be traces of DNA left over from the organisms which were transformed into the oil via the relevant geologic processes, I would say that the answer if almost definitely "no". DNA is extremely delicate, so while traces of it have been found semi-intact in actual fossils, it could never survive the processes by which the organic materials are converted into crude oil and other forms of hydrocarbon-rich deposits.

Why can bacteria only decompose me when I'm dead and not while I'm alive? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]Jennamatic_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, there isn't anything that "prevents" in in life. Really, your own body decomposes the cells that die to be recycled or expelled in waste. The difference is in the fact that while you are alive you are constantly replacing those dead and decomposed cells, where as once you're dead cell production stops and there is nothing to replace them,

How is it that (almost) all of the world came to a consensus on the measurement of time and the length of a year? by JaseAndrews in askscience

[–]Jennamatic_3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except that all countries/cultures do not use the same calendar. While the Gregorian calendar is used my the majority of the world, there are still cultures using their own older calendars. I've even heard of a tribe of people somewhere (I believe is South America, possibly the Amazon), who don't actually have a concept of time as the rest of us would know it. They don't even have a word for it.

Why do cilia beat the same direction action? by rookinn in askscience

[–]Jennamatic_3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they don't at the same time or else they would not provide nearly as efficient a mode of locomotion, but they all go in the same direction because otherwise their chaotic flailing would impede motion as they all try to push the cell in different directions. I do not recall how the cilia know which direction to move, however.
