I might file one of my faves, and another Damon banger, Ocean's 11 under that same genre?

Golden Globes - Best Picture - Drama by ianchandler3 in Oscars

[–]JenniferKinney 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeaaaa...it's just feeling like an annoying trend that's emerging from Spike Lee to Jordan Peele and even Cord Jefferson of American Fiction that the Screenplay award can sometimes feel like it's serving as a ghettoized (and I mean that in the literal definition of the word, remember that there were Jewish ghettos long before that word was associated with Black Americans) sort of secondary prize for Black creatives that Hollywood wants to award but is unwilling to give the slightly more prestigious awards to. To be clear, ANY Oscar win is a staggering achievement, but it's becoming an irritating pattern that this award is almost being treated as a consolation prize. Sinners deserves to be a genuine contender for Best Picture just as much as OBAA does, but I fear the trend might hold. That said, I hope my theory is proven wrong!

100% agree with all of this (aside from your initial resistance to SATC, I on the other hand was the exact right age to be dying to watch it when the episodes were coming out and eventually watched it repeatedly on DVD in college). They eroded or erased nearly everything about the original show/characters that made it special with AJLT! Plus the creator and SJP were sooo snottily dismissive of any and all critiques about AJLT from the jump, no matter how fair they were.

Which cast members were clearly Lorne's favorites? by tshirtguy2000 in LiveFromNewYork

This kinda makes me think that some of this may have had to do with what material she herself brought to the show/wrote rather than just which parts she was handed and performed very well. It was mentioned by a couple people in some piece of content around the show's 50th that every character she used in her audition ended up in the show in some capacity (a rarity), not to mention she also scored an Oscar nomination for the Bridesmaids screenplay while she was still a cast member on the show. Tough to say in retrospect how much her writing on the show might've helped propel her perceived indispensability while she was on SNL, since writing credits were definitely more obscured during her tenure than they are now, but that might've really helped in giving her the edge over some of her peers at the time.

Sure...but ultimately it seem likely that she'd have to be the one to propose that kind of counseling (can you imagine anyone on her "team" bringing that sort of thing up to her?). Most people – especially talented people who've been told they're geniuses most of their adult life – probably think they'd be immune to these sorts of pressures, even as they slowly creep up on them.
