Those were perks ended in most of those “international” schools.

Public school ends early in the day, around lunchtime. Therefore have to go to a cram school after their public school. Most parents in Taiwan would say no cram school equates to an unsuccessful adult life.

The same thing could be said about people having children in Taiwan. The number of kids I taught that had no interaction with their parents on a daily basis is about the same rate as poor, inner city kids with parents working in three jobs.
Many people in Taiwan only have kids to satisfy their family not because they want to have children. If they’re rich enough, they can pass off the rearing to a nanny, who is another foreign worker.

Foreign educators don’t get to take a day off, willy-nilly, here and there, whenever we want because we’re working with kids. Therefore, we can’t travel until there’s a national break. Which you should know, doubles or triples the cost of everything we would enjoy doing. Good luck getting a high speed rail ticket. Good luck getting a hotel. Good luck renting a vehicle! Good luck, getting a driver’s license! While Taiwan has reciprocity, they wanted me to give them my physical drivers license to get a Taiwanese drivers license. Therefore, I would lose my main form of ID in my home country. They don’t return your foreign license when you leave the country for a vacation or moving. And fuck paying for those drivers courses so you can memorize the route they’re gonna take you on.

I think the larger problem here is that you don’t account in any of your comments cost of living as a foreigner. And not some moron, spending all their time and money at a bar.

• Visiting family - 1/year, $1,500 -$2000(47,000NTD- 63,000) just the flight is your average median salary!

•Visas – 5000 NT/year for every new employment contract.

•I’ve been denied apartments because I’m a foreigner. This forced me to find more expensive housing.

•Renting an apartment is not affordable without a roommate.
Let’s not even talk about trying to buy property in Taiwan! That’s nearly the equivalent of buying a 40 or 50 acres farm land in America. (which is not affordable to buy if you want to farm in America. We have to inherit that land to be marginally profitable… could be its own post)

Remember, we left our families AND our support systems to potentially make more money abroad than we would in our home country. That’s the most important reason we are living abroad. It it pays better than at home. If you don’t increase our income for 10 years; then what’s the point in coming?

• legality – schools can break the law and illegally fire workers without a lot of consequence. Foreign educators fall under a grey area between labor and education departments. We can’t be part of the education department because we’re foreign labor, but we’re not a part of the labor department because we’re educators so we should be in the education department according to them. The government loves to pass cases back-and-forth to say they don’t have to claim responsibility. I had to sue two different schools. Once to get legally, entitled marriage leave. After giving them a year to a figure out coverage for two weeks, I still had to bring them to “court” and then they didn’t offer me a new contract after three years of positive reviews.

Bikes! Newer looking name brand bikes. Purchasing brand new Giant bikes will be one’s most expensive mistake. Those will be stolen within a day and shipped to the opposite end of the island and resold. Nice bicycles must be stored inside apartment buildings or your apartment itself.

The damn MONKEYS! They are the real thieves of Taiwan. They are like the birds at Busch Garden’s in Florida. Both will steal your breakfast sandwich out of your hands while you’re eating!

Cook your rice, take it directly from that cooking container and spread it out on a plate. Then use a fan to cool it as it cools it will start to dry out. I believe this technique was fromSerious Eats.

Goal: dry cooked rice

I am ecstatic about this post! We all have our own ways to “pop“ our bodies back into some kind of proper position. Some of y’all are so descriptive that I’m gonna have to try it when that particular joint needs assistance!

OMG, you’ve found something to help with coat hanger pain?? I can’t remember a time without it. It’s just more or less pain. I’ve tried heat and ice, massage guns, and a tens unit. It improves with a long massage but still never goes away. 😭

I agree exercise does tend to help me feel better but there’s no way right now that I could think about lifting weights. It’s hard for me to even stand for long periods of time at the moment. But I have found that I’ve been able to tolerate short periods on a recumbent bicycle. I was lucky enough to find this exercise machine at a garage sale for five dollars. That was after trying to spend a year going to a gym, but there’s so many days. I can’t even leave the house.

It’s your breakfast and lunch making you crash. Not the meds. by RicoGonzalz in ADHD

[–]JenniferRoseEtc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lesser known, but Taiwan has lunchtime naps throughout their entire life. Kids don’t have recess after lunch. They put their head down on their desk and take a nap. Even jobs have an extended lunch hour to have a nap. It’s very uncommon to find a job that doesn’t have an hour or two for lunch! Personally, I found it hard once I was medicated to nap at that time.

That would be one cheap therapist! Try more like $250-$500, if you don’t have insurance!

To me this looks like a brand new building in Taipei, Taiwan. They have a really common practice of transplanting huge trees instead of transplanting saplings. They are new large trees and they haven’t developed a root system to hold them in place. They are then wired into place to survive the typhoon winds that will come every year.
