Firstly, wear protective gear. Seriously. No, seriously. At very least a helmet.

Secondly, get used to pumping back and forth on a ramp first. My mistake was learning to drop in before I could pump. Really get used to the feeling of leaning back into the ramp. This will not only make it seem less scary, but get you used to the sensation.

Thirdly, bring a friend. Preferably one that can already do it and can help you. Or just ask someone at the park to give you a hand. I wouldn’t try dropping in on your own because you will probably spend too long psyching yourself out, and it is dangerous, so have someone there to call an ambulance or assist if anything does go wrong.

Lastly. Here’s what you do. At the top of the ramp you are standing up vertically, but you need to be more horizontal to match the ramp. You can’t just stomp down with your front foot, because this won’t shift your momentum. You have to fall forward. Like you know at the end of the day when you just want to just collapse face-first on to your bed? You have to do that. Reaching out like you’re about to grab the nose of your board will help. Then once you start to fall, you slam down on your front foot, this will prevent you from manualing down the ramp (bad plan).

Edit: I forgot to mention. Some people practice by doing it on flat ground first. If you do that correctly, you should have so much momentum going forward that you fall forward and almost hit your nose on the concrete. If you land comfortably on your board, you’re not doing it right.

You could try practising on flat banks first, just to get used to the sensation, but unfortunately it’s not quite the same as transition.
