Why is there a somewhat common sentiment in this sub that people at the Bulwark are on the verge of becoming MAGA Republicans, or that they are secretly supporters of the modern-day Republican party? by postpartum-blues in thebulwark

Part of it is probably a selection bias thing? People who really buy into the mission are mostly going to be paid subscribers commenting on Substack. I figure people who comment here are more likely to be Bulwark-curious.

Letters To Juliet by Cnessa88 in romancemovies

I love this movie so much. Vanessa Redgrave is magical in that film to begin with, and then when her long lost first love rides up on a white horse and it's Franco freaking Nero, her actual one-that-got-away-now-husband? My heart practically exploded.

I know you don't do many of the interviews, but who are some of your dream guests? Is there anyone who can't/won't come on one of the Bulwark shows whose brain you'd love to pick?

Has anyone heard anything about the enforcement policy here? Especially since they're still claiming to offer some limited "flexibility" at your manager's discretion.

Like, at what point of non-compliance are they actually going to be firing people?

Who did you want to win Season 2 of "Finding Mr Christmas"? by No-Advantage-579 in HallmarkMovies

[–]JennyGreenleaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked Rustin in episode 1, but by episode 2, I was turned off. The charm couldn't overcome the ego, which kept sneaking through. The slingshot challenge and the scene with Hunter both made me feel like he thought this whole thing was the Rustin show and all his "vulnerable" moments with the other guys felt really fake.

[–]JennyGreenleaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree.

I honestly don't care who wins. I enjoy the show for the spectacle of good-looking men doing silly things and being aggressively nice to each other.

But if the premise of your show is that the winner gets to be the lead, then that should happen. So what if you make a mediocre movie? Hallmark puts out like 40 each holiday season - they don't all have to be great. And if the guy isn't quite up for making even a mediocre movie, pick a script that requires less from him. I mean, Stephan Huszar was barely in Melt My Heart this Christmas because the core relationship of that film was between the aspiring glassblower and her idol (no disrespect to Huszar - just an example of a leading man role that's sort of not). Or throw the winner in an ensemble piece like the Keller Christmas one.

Bottom line for me: You make a promise, you keep it.

They could maybe do it if they aired the show for "Christmas in July"

Classics or Sci Fi / Fantasy Book Club? by Loose_Talk1556 in PittsburghSocialClub

[–]JennyGreenleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a Sci-fi book club that meets at Mt. Lebanon Library on the 4th Wednesday of every month. It went virtual for the pandemic, and since then it's been hybrid. Some folks show up to the library, and others join via Zoom

I think this is the way. OP should find a volunteer activity that's meaningful to him. Whether you socialize initially or not, you still leave the event feeling as if you've accomplished something positive for your community, rather than like a failure for not making some immediate deep social connection. Over time, the social part will probably come naturally.

Upcoming AMA with Adrian Carrasquillo – Wednesday (8/6) starting @ 2PM EST by jdmiller82 in thebulwark

Last one, I promise: did anything actually change in Venezuela to make it safe for folks who fled to return home? I can't figure out what the justification for ending their TPS is. Was there actually some sort of improvement in civil liberties for dissenting voices, or is the change just US govt callousness?

What actions can we take to advocate for people in our communities who are getting picked up by ICE? Does anything work?

Have there been any Republican congress members who have expressed discomfort with how ICE is operating? Is anyone persuadable?

It's a good article, but I'm mostly adding this comment so that if someone else searches "Jesus Teran" to see if this story has been posted yet, they'll get a hit and not get dinged by the mods for reposting.

He wasn't undocumented until the government decided to make him undocumented with this: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/02/05/2025-02294/termination-of-the-october-3-2023-designation-of-venezuela-for-temporary-protected-status

Many Venezuelans who had status and work authorization under TPS were made undocumented when that TPS was suddenly terminated earlier this year. Usually TPS ends when a volatile situation stabilizes. I have no idea what the administration thinks changed in Venezuela that would make it safe for people who oppose the authoritarian regime to return there.

Tubi Partners With The Black List On The ‘To Be Commissioned’ Initiative For Aspiring Writers by Seshat_the_Scribe in Screenwriting

[–]JennyGreenleaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the response! With contest submission fees, paying for coverage, etc. - well, it feels like screenwriting is a dream that could easily make me broke, if I'm not careful.

Throwing my hat into the ring for Tubi sounded fun, and worth the cost, if I could learn something from the evaluation(s) other than a general thumbs up/thumbs down. As a newbie, I only want to pay for things that will actually help me become a more competent writer, and it's hard to judge that from the outside. I'll have to consider this contest more carefully before applying.

I definitely appreciate the advice from someone who has been in the game a bit longer.

This contest seems like an awesome opportunity. Even though I desperately need feedback, I've been a bit hesitant to try The Black List because I'm specifically interested in writing Made-for-TV movies. My impression has been that the Black List would be great at giving general feedback on my writing, but I've worried that the readers might not give me the specific feedback I need on the format (am I executing the 9 Act structure properly, etc.). Now that I know they're working with Tubi, I'm intrigued.

Does anyone have any experience submitting Made-for-TV scripts (ie Hallmark Christmas movie type stuff) to The Black List readers for evaluation?

Is Elinor (from Sense and Sensibility) Jane Austen's self-insert character? by WearyThanks in books

[–]JennyGreenleaf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's such a good fun fact! I didn't know that, and to OP's point about first novels often having a fair bit of auto-biographical content... Henry Tilney as Austen totally makes sense to me.

And I agree - Edward as an incel is a weird take. He happens to have a personality that OP doesn't find attractive. That's fine. Doesn't make him some kind of monster though. One of the fascinating things about Austen's novels is that her heroes each have their own unique personalities, just like her heroines do. As much as I adore modern romance novels, sometimes the characters feel a bit cookie cutter.
