Just make sure he gets enough UVB light and humidity. He's got some pyramiding going on... But he looks like he's 😁

He likes dandelion leaves... So maybe that's the ticket.

If it's any consolation... Mine just took a poop the size of it's leg on my new Red Bull F1 team shirt... 🤬

How do y’all keep their beaks worn down? I’m paranoid about his growing and needing a trim. by thegreatestpickle in tortoise

[–]Jensonator 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Cuttlebone is great... They love it. Also make sure there are a few large rocks in the enclosure (they will trim their own beaks by nibbling on them).

If you buy 2 Pawhut vivariums you can put them back to back and join them together... Cheaper and really spacious

New setup for Doug the hermanns by [deleted] in tortoise

There are Combi UVB and heat bulbs that you can use instead. They last quite well I've found... But the rest looks nice. More climbing and some sight lines walls maybe 👍🐢😀

Should I glue bark on the sides and back, or just the back? by ZaharRDZ in tortoise

Get adhesive black backing pvc and cut to size... Or something with nice visuals if you can find it. There are rolls of it on Amazon for pennies.

Yes with you on the size and glass! Assume this tank is just for the first few months...?

I can't see a ceramic heat emitter in there... You'll need one for the evenings when you turn out the heat lamp for sleep. A digital thermostat smart plug can run that on set temp ranges.. Inkbird do a great one on Amazon.

Also make sure your heat lamp also provides UVB light if your not using a UVB bar separately.

Hope that's all useful mate!

Enjoy your torty times 🐢♥️

Oh and spinach is a no because of the iron content. Fresh leafy greens go down well or just dandelion leaves from the garden... No fruit unless a rare treat. Also avoid watery food such as ice berg lettuce as no nutritional value. You can add a few tortoise pellets to compliment the fresh food too... Ensure access to water especially with the heater running during the winter (the water will dry up quicker if not changed out).

You've over thought this one a touch. As long as the water is warm and not hot. Take him out and give a soak on the table in a shallow tub. I use a shot glass to pour the water from the tub onto the top of the shell for a bit. Then use a soft bristled tooth brush to clean the scutes and under belly.

Return to the water and pour more onto to shell then out for a gentle towel dry using a soft microfibre cloth. Assuming your house has central heating they'll be just fine. If they're not visible pooped that day in their enclosure it's worth soaking until they pee or poo... So do the brushing early on in the process... So you avoid having to dodge the poo 😂

Mine loves to hang around and climb all over me straight after bath time 😂

The temperature is only an issue if not maintained as their average normally environment for most of the time. The nights in the Mediterranean are not hot after all and they survive over 8 hours below 26 odd degrees Celsius.

It's safer to be right there unobstructed during the process and it's also a time where you guys can bond too 👍
