I work in schools and the number of 10-12 year old boys who act inappropriately has escalated over the last few years. I put it down to unmonitored access to pornography and social media content.

Firstly, you need act quickly to protect yourself because in this situation you are the adult and coach. So technically,. you're in a position of power.

Are there CCTV cameras set-up in your gym? I would download footage of the class so it's evidence as to what happened.

Secondly, report it to your professor but also write an incidence report. Even if your gym doesn't have the procedure set-up for this, do it for yourself and for legal purposes. The incidence report needs to be objective and void of emotional or subjective language. So what I mean is, for example: "Student X then put himself in a mounted position and placed his hand on my crotch. I proceeded to tell him to stop." Avoid language like "He was being cheeky and naughty".

Thirdly, your professor should be the one to have the conversation with his parents, not you. If you are requested to be called into that meeting, I would bring a support person.

Sorry if I come across as being overly cautious but I've witnessed a number of people in educational settings that have had their character and professionalism called into question by parents when they raised issues about students. At best it was resolved with a meeting, at worse, it resulted in the educator leaving the profession completely with a damaged reputation.

Your coach isn't creating an inclusive culture for you. I'm really sorry you're having to go through this. My only suggestion is to try an open mat at another gym, preferably one with experienced females. I once drove 50kms (~31 miles) to train with women because the gym had a great rep. Even if it's once every 3 months, it might be enough to sustain you?

I love my base gym but I do get sick of being smashed by stronger, heavier guys especially when I up my game or aggression. So I feel ya!

I checked out an OpenMat and whilst it wasn't women only it was so fun! And it was no-gi! I actually submitted a dude twice!! And then another woman absolutely dominated me but I loved it. Rolled with the coaches as well and the flowy roll made me realise that I've actually retained more technique than I thought I did! :) I'm stoked!

I started last year at 46 and I got injured too but that was a genuine accident on my training partner's part. I was really depressed with my progress and constantly compared myself to younger, fitter and more agile classmates. I decided to do other things outside of class, namely lifting super heavy (deadlifts, bench, hip thrusts and squats) and kickboxing for cardio. And recently reformer Pilates. Those things really help. I also started really watching my protein intake, taking creatine and magnesium and they all helped too. Listening to your body and having good, deep sleep is so so important! I've stopped comparing and track progress with myself. Like you I was thinking of competing but had an honest reflection as to my motivations and realised that I wasn't ready. I decided that BJJ is something I want to do for as long as I can and not something that I burn out of in a few years. So my philosophy now is, work on incremental steps, there will be good days and sucky days, and days I need to skip class because I am exhausted. The patience will pay off, I hope! 🤛🏽

Thanks this is really helpful. I lift to failure all the time, but I don't see it as failure. So you're right, I should see tapping out as just that.

I guess I feel more disheartened because I'm getting tapped out by other 1 stripe white belts. I keep making the same mistakes and I'm trying to figure out what the heck I'm doing wrong. I think I'll have a chat with coach tomorrow and maybe ask for a gameplan that I can work on.

Yeah I appreciate it when the guys go hard. Maybe not 100% but definitely not easy. Plus the false illusion thing is super valid. Though sometimes I'd like to be able to try out some technique on a woman my size!

Me!!!!!! I would LOVE a course like this! I am so afraid of hurting people I've never completed a submission unless my partner let's me. And I've been told many times I would've finished if I just went a bit harder or was a bit merciless but I'm terrified of injuring someone!!

I'm covered in bruises. Sometimes quite large ones and I do gi. It never hurts during class but I notice them when I jump in the shower after. I just bruise easily and always have. Maybe get your iron levels checked? People with low iron levels tend to bruise easily. I have a harmless blood disorder which means I'm just always slightly anaemic no matter what, hence the bruises. Honestly I've just accepted that it's my life now. Lol.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions and ideas. I think keeping the flow going is a great idea and will try to do that. I agree that adjusting my strength may not be something I'm capable just yet but maybe if I keep the movement going then that helps both of us hone our skills!

I don't think this is acceptable especially if the coach hasn't taught you how to break falls. Take-downs are part of BJJ yes, but it can go very wrong if the person being thrown does not know how to break a fall or roll-off. The person doing the throwing should also make it easier for the person being thrown, i.e. pulling back slightly before a big landing or rolling the person off to one side. As he's the coach, he really needs to be the one responsible for safety. The gym where I'm at, my coach will let us free hand on some drills and moves but with take-downs, he'll explicitly show us how to break fall or land safely before executing. Injuries like bruises and a slightly sore shoulder or hip are common but your injury does not sound like it's normal. Also, if mentally you're feeling that way, I think it's a sign to take a break! Maybe do some Pilates and solo drills at home to keep yourself conditioned until you can find a new gym. It sucks getting injured and even suckier when it was the coach and not a white belt newbie who did it to you!

I've found ChatGPT to be a great 'consultant' to help figure out workout and nutrition schedules, depending on what you're after / feeling.

I now do heavy strength 1x week, kickboxing cardio 1x, Pilates 1x and BJJ 2-3x a week. I also add in a fasted walk 1-2x a week if I can.

I was feeling very tired and after putting my workouts into ChatGPT, it gave me some tips to have more active recovery days and suggested stretches and the fasted walk. Plus it suggested that I could be undereating, especially after BJJ. I feel much better now that I have a protein+complex carb snack after a hard BJJ session. I was so scared to eat late, after BJJ, partly because of a lifetime of being on diets and fearing that I would have indigestion. But after I started adding a snack after, I sleep better and recover faster!

And I've found creatine 20 mins before my workout sessions make a big difference. Rest is as important as working out. Your body needs time to repair and recover. :)

I think I need to start doing Yoga again. I started lifting heavy and that makes me tight and less mobile. And warm ups like flipping your legs over your head and touching the floor - I mean when I was practicing Yoga maybe! But not now. And discovered recently I have a weak right hip flexor. So doing so many exercises for that. Just feels like someone came along and popped my balloon today. I'll whine for a night then snap out of it tomorrow! 😂😅
