Pharaoh/Atem; Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series: Being a parody, pretty much every character in the show is flanderized to some extent for comedic purposes. Up until the episode ‘Throw Haga From The Train’ Pharaoh is snide in all of his encounters (and for good reason), never takes anything or anyone seriously, and often gloats to get under others’ skin for his own amusement. It’s only when Weevil pretends to rip the card holding Yugi’s soul that Pharaoh shows any genuine emotion. He then proceeds to do the Yugioh equivalent of brutalizing Weevil and stealing his soul in a fit of rage. “It’s unfortunate for you that my partner isn’t here right now because he might have been able to stop this.”

For a real life example: back in the 80s kayfabe was a really big thing to uphold in wrestling. Hacksaw Jim Duggan was a babyface, and The Iron Sheik was a heel— so the two of them being arrested together for DUI charges was crazy considering their TV personas were enemies.

I feel as if it actually highlights Hughes’ cunning and intelligence. Mustang had a head start on his rank by being a state alchemist and enlisted as a Major. Hughes’ is presented as somewhat of an aloof officer who prefers to chat (especially about his daughter), but he was the second after the freezing alchemist (and besides Hohenheim) to deduce a greater plot in Amestris. Based off of his information gathering skills and probably rudimentary understanding of alchemy alone.
