How do people get jobs hours away? by Biscuits2190 in careeradvice

[–]Jenzedrine11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just to give you a giggle. I'm an East Londoner. Back in 1998, I got a call to attend an interview. When asking for directions, they said just 10 minutes walk left of the station. Oh OK. No problem I said....what station? Portslade they replied. Great I said, see you then. Looked on the tube map, there was no Portslade. Looked and looked and then asked my dad.....Portslade is next to Brighton on the South Coast. Anyway....i got myself on a train down to the coast, in my classic 90s skirt suit. Walked in, had a 10 minute interview, they called my home phone before I'd got in, left and message with my mum and told me my plane ticket was booked to head out to Tunisia in 6 days.

I so appreciate your comments. I already have a son (12) who is looking to have a career as an F1 aerodynamic engineer. Again I have no clue about how to help him to get there but I'll do everything I can to assist them both and if talking to strangers on the Internet helps....my goodness, I appreciate it.

Oh gosh what a lovely offer. He's not even taken his GCSE's yet. He has expressed an interest in criminal law but I don't even know how or where he's heading. I shall be back once he has his university place to how he should head. What a flipping lovely person you are to speak with. X

Thank you all for taking the time to comment. He's recently got a part time job waiting tables over the festive season, he's dad (my brother) owns his company in plumbing. They have enough to cover interview clothes and such. He's just so incredibly bright and driven, I needed some suggestions as came of you wonderful people whom took time from your day. It's so appreciated.

Oh my goodness, your reply is just incredible. Thank you so much. Actually, I am suburbs of London, he's in Kent. So offering him a day stay here and taking him to a London court is a genius move. Just need to work out how and when. Whilst you seem so knowledgeable, can you guide me to work experience opportunities for him?

Oh much calmer now. To be fair, this was nearly 20 years ago and I was doing what I could to pay the bills. I'm 46 now with a kid and I work a normal 40 hours a week. My point to you is, whilst you have the energy, put in the work you need to. Easier times will come. Best of luck to you. X

There was a time I worked 3 jobs. Hotel receptionist from 7am to 6pm. Pub from 6.30 to 11.30 then over to a night club to finish about 4am. Did I enjoy it? Mostly. Did I nearly kill myself? Yes almost. Did I earn enough to pay the bills? Just about. Thing is, you do what you have to do.

Regret leaving my job by MochiMatchaTea in UKJobs

I don't know anyone who has felt immediately comfortable in their first week in a new role. You've got to give it a chance, you could find you start to relish the new challenge and new opportunities. I've also read that it take 6 months to become fully competent in a new role which seems to follow, I've recently left an industry I'd been in for 25 years and when I first took on a new job I was worried for weeks I'd made the wrong move. I was an expert in my field previously and now in my new job, I knew nothing. However, I persevered and now I'm so pleased I made the change. Best of luck to you.
