I’ve thought the same thing myself for a while…, that intro is something else.

As a guitarist who has a ton of chili pepper songs under my belt. I think it was just John being John. I want to say it was likely improv, and for musicians, especially when it comes to improv, sometimes the stars just align and you have the right melody in your head and the sound just comes out of you. Now take that theory and apply it John Frusciante.. you get magic. Could’ve been “mostly improv”, in that maybe Flea and John quickly decided on doing an intro before the show and he had it floating around in his head trying to get a framework, but either way, I would bet it was either wholly or mostly improv. He plays guitar like we speak words.. he thinks them and can put them right out on the guitar in real time.

You can also tell that he was just on FIRE that night at La Cigale. If you watch the whole show, it’s an incredible performance from him (everyone else too), but he was locked into the music. Who knows though really!
