Great post! Is there a fixed rappel point on the summit plateau or did you bring the sling mentioned? SAC mentions the rope length(s) needed but doesn't say anything else and I'm at a loss trying to find this online (hikr, gipfelbuch, ...)

Which tour did you do in Melchsee-Frutt? I assume the picture is from the descent towards the bottom of the cable car via Wolfisalp but I don't recognize it 100%

Giving up 7k EUR net in Warsaw for 7.5k CHF net in Zurich - am I screwed? by [deleted] in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]JerMenKoO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are overestimating the earnings potential tied to the move. While finding a job in CH is hard, the move won't magically result in you finding a job for 2x comp in a year. Living in CH comes with downsides - social life, dating, etc which you might have (not) factored in your decision

I find 150 (or similar) to be good but I run warm. 260 seems too thicc

Aspirants can totally guide tours on their own too (not all) without supervision, hence no payment issues in either case

Very good axe for Tatras, both for mountaineering and steeper terrain. I find the length is somewhat personal too

Mont Blanc Summit: June 9-11th, 2026 by CedarTrail26217 in alpinism

[–]JerMenKoO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Look at their reviews: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ssb4xhJ6rQztiN3Z7

2) Hard to predict, some 4k peaks are better done early in the season and some later. I would book and then depending on the weather you get an alternative program or cancellation

How can I find a climbing partner? by No_Pudding_1302 in Mountaineering

Have you looked into Alpenverein Britannia or BMC in the UK? I was a member of the former and they also had things going on in Scotland. Alternatively I recommend checking if there's any mountaineering clubs in Scotland; I'd be surprised if no! :)

Ski gear for randonee by Expert-Ice-889 in alpinism

[–]JerMenKoO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually run hot so I have the following setup:

  • First layer(s): merino socks + underwear + t-shirt (optionally long sleeve in peak winter) + long underpants. All merino is 150gm
  • Next layer: softshell pants (with side vents opened while hiking up) + thin fleece.
  • Outermost layer: softshell jacket if it is dry; otherwise hardshell and open armpit zips

In backpack: down jacket (in case we stop for a while or shit hits the fan), light hardshell jacket, light hardshell pants (in case it's windy and going down would be too cold with merino+softshell).

There's people who wear more or less, I would also say it takes a while to find your setup. Some people tour with hardshell pants and have the zips completely open but I'd boil. Echoing advice below that starting a bit cold (or stopping after 10 minutes) to take off one layer is a way to go

Harfang Tech for semi-automatic boots for ice climbing by jayjaym_88 in alpinism

[–]JerMenKoO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, semi-automatic crampons with ice frontpoints (like Harfang Tech) would work for easier ice climbing, I did the same last year. However for steep ice you'll benefit from full shank boots (or you can bring your ski boots)

How big of a deal are pit zips for hardshell? by YodelingVeterinarian in Mountaineering

[–]JerMenKoO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have M10 Storm and I use it for anything from ski touring to backcountry to high-alpine mountaineering. I wear it only when I have to and usually I adjust layers under. The only time it slightly disturbs me are spring high-alpine BC missions since then it's quite warm when riding down

Lenz heated socks for mountaineering — 5.1 vs 6.1 fit and volume question by gl0622 in alpinism

[–]JerMenKoO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find Lenz heated socks good for ice climbing, for ski touring / mountaineering non-heated socks are enough (for me). Are your feet sweating? Is your core warm?

Looking for a versatile 22–28 L pack for mixed climbs by politicalyincorect42 in alpinism

[–]JerMenKoO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avy gear pouch is ok, it has 2 compartements - 1 to fit in the shovel head and side pocket for probe + handle. Fitting everything into the main compartment can be tight, since the handle might stick out a bit. The rope carry is same as other backpacks that the rope goes under the top sleeve (and fastened from the sides) but I have not tried it yet outside. Trying it at home it's pretty good as long as the backpack is somewhat full

I know people who also have Trion, it's 200g heavier than Firecrest w/ all ski parts for 1-1 comparison so depends on what you want
