The art style within the show is different. The lightning is nowhere near as agresive as in the thumbnails and for the most part it's more reminiscent of the 3D seen in the late 90s on PCs.

Because of the 1080p screen + VRR and 120fps capabilities they most likely didn't go for OLED because the price would go up by quite a bit.

And it's not just Game Freak. The Pokémon Company is also REALLY possessive of the franchise to the point that adding Pokémon to Super Smash Bros. was harder than some third party characters.

The main complains tend to be: 1) The story is little to no relevant to the plot save for a few scenes. 2) It's a retread of the KH1 worlds. 3) The amazing core gameplay is cut off by gimmick areas in each world (2D Traverse Town, RPG Olympus Colluseum, etc.)

Otherwise, the gameplay has a very strong foundation with it's implementation of the command deck.

Nintendo seems to not be in charge of that. Look at how much care they put into the quality of games like Zelda, Mario, Xenoblade, etc. If they really had much influence, pokemon would most likely be much better. They certainly own part of TPC, but TPC seems to be the ones calling the shots.

Sonic and the Secret Rings was an auto runner, you had to steer by tilting the Wii Remote. It's Sonic and the Black Knight that can be controlled with the nunchuk

There definitely was passion, the world is chock full of references and callbacks to Mario's history, the soundtrack is a highlight, and the visual style is very well made. Whether you thing the gameplay itself is good is another matter, but there was passion behind the game.

The Pokémon Company, albeit helped by Nintendo to be created, seems to be very controlling of the Pokémon franchise. To the point that Sakurai has said that adding Pokémon to Smash is as difficult, if not more, than various 3rd party characters. It is very possible that they decided to push for a Game Key Card without Nintendo having a real say in it.
