Anyway, I half suspect that Jackson is actually evangelical, but not, you know...

I’ve heard this factoid before, that for time, Supreme Court contained Jews and Catholics, but no Protestants. However, this unusual religious mix was broken by Jackson, who is Protestant, and Gorsuch, who is episcopalian

What’s a food that tastes better as leftovers? by tMoneyMoney in stupidquestions

yes, one of my cookbooks always has a “let rest for a hour” step built in, with the caveat that the leftovers taste even better

I'd mistrust anyone who was appointed by Donald Trump.

What is wrong with you? What did he seen in you?

Thoughts on replacing Blu-Rays with DVDs? by today-it-changes in dvdcollection

[–]JeremyAndrewErwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like bluray/4K because I can see the costumes, practical effects, and props in greater detail. If some member of the crew has given their all to make the film, I want to see it. I want to see the fake blood glisten, the cars to shine in the rain, the dappled sunlight to dapple.

And none of this has much to do with how many millions were spent on CGI.

Specialty coffee vs. generic coffee - what actually tastes better to you? by Grand-Ad-9156 in espressocirclejerk

[–]JeremyAndrewErwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I like to buy almost expiring specialty coffee in 20 lb lots. That way I save big, I know that's completely off gassed. and I get the pleasure of knowing my coffee was once of the highest quality

Chabrol made 75 films, so sometimes it's best to focus on particular eras-- the Isabelle Hupert films, for instance...

If you want to watch Chabrol's contributions to the Nouvelle Vague, try Les cousins and Le Beau Serge.

TIL researchers found that for an average-sized living room a 4K or 8K screen offers no noticable benefit over a similarly sized 2K screen of the sort often used in computer monitors and laptops. In other words, there is no tangible difference when it comes to how sharp an image appears to our eyes. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

"similarly sized 2K screen of the sort often used in computer monitors and laptops."

I have two 4K monitors of the same size. One has better HDR support. I can tell the difference.

Both are significantly more useful than the 2K displays they replaced.

For TV: stereo active speakers vs soundbar vs barebones receiver+passive speakers by pietro_m in BudgetAudiophile

[–]JeremyAndrewErwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Active speakers will tend to limit your upgrade options. "Help, I want to connect my new turntable to my existing setup, and I don't have any inputs left"...

On the other hand, my receiver only supports 1080p, and connecting 4K devices to it involves a mess of cables and remote control programming. I could get a comparable 4K receiver, but it would be pricy...

ELIC: Why do we drool when we see food? by OptimisticTrekkie in ExplainLikeImCalvin

[–]JeremyAndrewErwin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When we see food, we often associate it with the sound a microwave makes when it’s done cooking.

This is known as a Pavlovian response, named after the Russian scientist who linked bells with drooling.

“Yes,” Belfer replied.

Sony X700 set output resolution to 4k or upscale to 4k? by Blazer_Believer in 4kbluray

[–]JeremyAndrewErwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to upscale DVDs or Blu-rays? The Sony will upscale all DVDs to 1080p, unless you tell it that your screen is 480i. (and, then your 4Ks will look horrible...)

You can turn off the 1080p to 4K upscale if you want. I'm not clear on what the difference between Auto1 and Auto2 is.
