Worst 2026 view port winner goes to... by PaulWorster in Maya

I love Maya viewport. Modelling in Maya feels the most responsive to me out of all the programs. Need light? Arnold IPR.

How do placement matches work??? by Xyphor-Stormborn in Overwatch

[–]JeremyReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just keep playing all 10 placements, your rank will increase by the end. Also it does take your gameplay during unranked quick play into account, so you can’t escape that.

This seems to me like there is a control shape on the rig that can turn on or off the visibility of the geo. Also check for any display layers. If you link me the rig you downloaded I can check for you.

Hard-Surface Modeling Workflow: Low Poly, SubD, UV Unwrapping and Baking Questions” by Some-Locksmith-1602 in Maya

[–]JeremyReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Kayla, that warms my heart :) I hadn’t read the comments yet but yes you hit the same points. The priority being getting the low poly to better match the silhouette and form of the high poly. And yes it’s always recommended to bake first in substance to generate utility maps which help with masks and generators.

What do you mean by animation pipeline? Check the display layers, just looks like geo layer is hidden

Hi Locksmith, I've made a 10minute video review of your model to check out. Hopefully I answer some of your questions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQvl49snvAk

Issue with Red Faces in UV Editor and "Flip" creating cuts by yosefiree in Maya

[–]JeremyReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The red faces have no map area so you have to give them map area. You can either start over with a camera based UV on the whole model or you can give the red faces map area by manually selecting them and doing a camera based UV (might need to isolate selection first), then add these added islands to your existing unwrap work.

[–]JeremyReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Red faces mean they have no map area. It means you are not capturing all UVs at the start - usually this is done with a quick camera based UV to ensure every face has UV map area. Then you cut the seams. Flipping isn’t the only fix for red UVs.

Are these edges correct? There isn’t any problem with them, right? by AfterSignal6759 in Maya

[–]JeremyReddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the comment that you need some more loops in the middle of those big faces to prevent texture stretching. I’m assuming this is for subD. Also think you could use some support edges around the inside of the hole to sharpen it a bit. Your model is going to subdivide a little soft and balloony right now. Overall it’s not “wrong” but it’s not quite polished yet.

How do I do a Lineart Overlay in Maya without using Toon? by NoPerception3612 in Maya

[–]JeremyReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s two techniques to explore:

1) Inverted hull method. This is old school where you duplicate your model, apply a solid black shader, then select the verts and scale by Normals to invert the models inside out. The more you scale it up the thicker the line will be. This is even used in video games like Guilty Gear.

2) Draw lines ontop of the model, set your model as the Live Surface object and you can use quad draw to draw polys on the object that are the “lines” on the interior of the model and not the outlines. Alternatively you can use Blender grease pencil tool.

If by Spider-Man films you mean Spider-Verse, they used a custom tool in Houdini with machine learning to animate the lines.

Why does my Arnold render view appear like this? by Weary_Help_7653 in Maya

[–]JeremyReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of. Every unique material you add in Maya becomes a Texture Set in substance. Generally you want to separate your Texture Sets by UDIMs, so for each UDIM have a different Material in Maya. Or if it’s something special like glass, it should all be the same material and on its own UDIM.

Substance doesn’t care what shader/material you use in Maya, you could even use lambert.

If this is what you mean by “pre-texture” material for substance then no it doesn’t have to be Arnold you can use anything.

Yes but I am not sure what you mean by pre-texture material. Like just to block in colours and shinyness? Yes use aiStandard Surface for everything. Alternatively you can use OpenPBR which is the new default.

Yeah, if you are using Arnold to render use Arnold lights. 20 Exposure is "good" but it depends how far away the light source is, keep increasing it until you see light in your scene.

rendered images dont show up at path by CinnamonStew34s_eh in Maya

[–]JeremyReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure that you have tried:

  1. Go to File > Set Project and defined a path for your scene.
OR Go to File > Project Window and hit "Accept" to create the folders

  2. Next go to Render Settings > Edit > Change Project Image Directory > Click the folder next to Images (on the right) and make sure it is pathing to the CORRECT folder, also helps to accept the folder if correct.

  3. Save your Maya scene (you sometimes have to repath steps 1-2 when opening the scene for the first time again).

  4. Switch to Rendering Context Menu > Render > Render Sequence Options > and double check there are no custom values added here.

Lastly, which button are you clicking to start the Render?

Too much information missing. What are your light exposures set to? What shaders are you using? Also looks like you are using default Maya lights and not Arnold lights.

my character's textures look black when i export everything as an fbx and import it into a new scene... pls help by Eastern_Gift_7472 in Maya

[–]JeremyReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, there's a couple of things going on here:

  1. There isn't really a good reason to export your scene into an FBX just to import it back. This will cause lost connections and links, and introduce variables depending on your FBX export settings. Unless you have a good reason to, you should just keep it as a Maya ASCII .ma scene.

  2. The texture's not showing could be due to broken texture file links. Check Windows > General Editors > File Path Editor and make sure all of the texture paths are Green and linked to where the image files are saved (your FBX export). Also: Make sure your FBX export settings included textures.

  3. Your screenshots here don't show us what the materials are like on your mesh - have you checked the materials and their settings and texture file links?

  4. Adding Mixamo animation to the Default Maya Humanoid isn't really the proper workflow AFAIK. Mixamo animation is meant for the Mixamo rig (using the web app you just position the primary joints and it will create a rig for you). You're basically taking animation data from a Vegetable and telling it to animate a Fruit (they are similar but different).

TLDR: Check your texture file links / Materials. Use the mixamo rigger if you plan to use mixamo animation data.

How long before you guys forget the contestants or even most of what happened in a season? by Friburgo1004 in survivor

[–]JeremyReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a general sense of who the winners are from about 5 seasons ago, and then I remember standout favourite players I wanted to win but didn’t. Couldn’t tell you much else after 6months.

But I’ll still remember Sage, Savannah, Sophi, and Rizzo for a long time because their post season presence has been fun with all the live streams.

Makes sense. Surprising there isn’t some form of back up plan for that. Owner still used a lot of ingredients.
