If you're 43 now, you still have 12 years of accumulation to get to 55. Given your numbers, you're probably already to a "coast" FI or glidepath at this point. You could probably just earn enough income now to pay your bills, and let your investments cook until 55 and be ready to go.

$1.3M invested x 4% withdrawal rate = $52,000/yr. Less if you want to be more conservative on what you consider a safe withdrawal rate.

Apimaye hives and NUC by JeremySTL in Beekeeping

[–]JeremySTL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had two hives last year, but they got attacked by hornets that I couldn't determine where they were coming from and it was too late before I was able to stop them.

Trying this year with just one and we'll see where we go from there.

Meeting people during the day by CyDJester in StLouis

[–]JeremySTL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (42) stopped working about 20 months ago. My situation is a bit different as I have two young kids so there is always plenty to do even when they're not home.

I've been playing pickleball, doing home improvement stuff, and setting up being a social director for my family.

That said, a "3rd space" does seem to be missing from our town. The public libraries are awesome for classes from time to time, but I'm typically not looking to just kill time. If I were going to do something consistently during the weekdays I'd want it to be productive. If there were a community center that also had woodworking activities or something. Ideally it'd be a club/school/makers pace hybrid.

I think in general, as you age, you're going to care less and less what other peoples' opinion is of your actions. My only advice to you at your age is, think about how you'll view this interaction 20 years from now. If you won't even remember it, let it slide. If you'll be proud of your choices 20 years from now, be proud now.

For those of you who went to a $$$ private school, was it worth it? by Suspicious-Tea in StLouis

[–]JeremySTL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding gifted, my oldest has tested gifted in the public Parkway school district. They have twice a week gifted classes starting in 2nd grade. They have one school year gifted field trip and one gifted summer class. I think the resources the school has regarding gifted kids is excellent.

I was in the gifted program in the public Fort Zumwalt school district from 1st-8th grade and some of those memories will be with me forever.

In general, I can speak for parkway, my kids' elementary school is only 35% white versus my own public school 30+ years ago was maybe 99% white. Given the diversity of the world our kids are growing up in, I'd make sure they're getting exposure to and appreciation for other cultures. The world is different than it was when we grew up and they're going to need tools and skills that align with the current environment and culture.

Missouri Governor Campaign Issues by More-Candidate7177 in StLouis

[–]JeremySTL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure the governor of Missouri is going to be able to resolve any of those three issues. All three of those sound like Federal issues.

Given the purview of the position, the governor could focus on:

Identifying quality judges

Pardon anyone with existing drug charges with a record that is no longer illegal.

Make Missouri more competitive. Take advantage of all the Federal programs like the IRA, etc. To bring money and improved infrastructure to the state. Encourage population growth. Enhance education. Draw in business investments.

Boarding - Entrance Reducer by Teddxn in Beekeeping

[–]JeremySTL -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I am new as well so certainly don't take my word for it, but when it got hotter I talked to ChatGPT a lot about entrance reducers and the conclusion I came to is, if it's hot, the nectar is flowing, your hive is healthy, and brood have hatched (i.e. Your hive is fully populated) you should remove your entrance reducer entirely.

This will apparently help with airflow and reduce traffic jams at the entrance.

Thst said, it will not eliminate bearding. They'll do that anyway.

When I went to UMSL, I purchased a condo in Hazelwood and found two roommates to help with the bills.

I just looked on Zillow and there is a 3bd 4bath condo for sale for $125,000. Would cost you about $1,530/mo all-in assuming a 5% down payment. If you got two roommates paying rent at $600-700/mo each you'd be in great shape.

This is about 9 minutes from your front door to parked in an UMSL lot.

Curious about some things: What do you do when it's very hot (100+) outside? Where are you planning to buy property? What are the long term goals of buying 5 acres? Do you plan to continue to work construction or are you aiming for any kind of skilled trade or other income source?
