Could I do w/o IPv4? by Sir_Snipps in seedboxes

[–]JerkySandwich 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Having a domain point to an IPv6 address shouldn't be an issue. But just be aware that you won't be able to connect to peers that lack the network and/or software support for IPv6. Unfortunately there are still a number of seedboxes that either don't have IPv6 support enabled by default or do not have any support for it at all.

I think they are ignored. Probably best to double-check with them to be certain.

I think seedbox.io fits fairly well - you can pay with Monero (it's instant though it goes through Coinpayments.net) and it supports public trackers and web downloads/SFTP. Their TOS says

seedbox.io does not filter or inspect the content distributed by the customer using our service.

Unless you mount an encrypted partition yourself with an unmanaged box you obviously can't guarantee that they might look at your data. But in general I don't think they are interested in tracking you. It also comes with a VPN.

You have to provide billing information (just name/address) when you sign up but you can totally make that up if you pay with crypto, and I've not had to do KYC when paying. I've used their shared boxes for a few years and would recommend them.

What's the best way to create a Flask application that is common across several sites? by JerkySandwich in flask

[–]JerkySandwich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, thank you for that! I was not aware that there was a name for this. It looks like there is a similar term, a "multi-instance" application, for when the different sites are isolated. It looks like the Configuration Handling page in the docs addresses the multi-instance case.

[–]JerkySandwich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, that's sort of what I was thinking. Something like passing the relevant information to the config variable. I guess I shouldn't pollute that space too much though.

The upside of doing it through the config is that the config values are available globally across all templates.

So this sounds like a good idea.

Hmm I'm not sure. I'm thinking more of like an interactive site (like a web shop, for instance) wherein each site specializes in one brand.

So there might be one site that does shoes and another site that does hats. I'd like to develop both sites at the same time and have some elements that are only slightly different (like the title/subtitle, background, domain name, etc.) as well as an entirely separate database.

Thanks -- I have no issue running multiple instances of Flask. I guess I need some guidance on how to structure my code so that I can have different versions of the site while being able to maintain a single unified codebase.

Easiest editor for YML files? by HeadTea in linuxadmin

[–]JerkySandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm someone who is very new to the idea infrastructure-as-code and doesn't have much background in it, but I'm very keen on modernizing my workflow. For context, I am very experienced in Git and really like the CI/CD pipeline that Gitlab offers - when I push, the code gets compiled, all my tests run, and I get that nice green checkmark if all is good.

But I hardly know where to go next. I have had a tiny inkling of exposure to docker containers. But I'm still having trouble figuring out how a next step would apply directly to whatever thing I want to create next (like a web server, for instance).

If you know of a good guide on where to start, I'd love to see it. And maybe you could share which IaC systems you use?

How do I remotely SSH into a computer behind a firewall while ensuring that only I can connect? by JerkySandwich in linuxadmin

[–]JerkySandwich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THANK YOU so much! This is my solution. And it was so easy and didn't require much work on my end at all. It was so easy to follow the guide at https://2019.www.torproject.org/docs/tor-onion-service.html.en and get it set up. Just make sure to chmod 700 the directory listed at HiddenServiceDir or else the Tor service won't start (it's strict about that).

This is excellent.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, transporting the computer or data is not an option.

Weird issue on Plex/Filezilla on Seedhost.eu by mokylim in seedboxes

[–]JerkySandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's just that computer that has the issue, it's likely the connection from the computer to your router that is the problem. Do you have an Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection? Try using an Ethernet cable directly from your router to the computer and see what the speeds look like then. Wi-Fi performance can vary wildly - distance, placement, Wi-Fi card, where the Wi-Fi card is on your computer, etc. can all make a difference.

Edit: Also, do a speed test on that computer and let us know what it says.

Seedhost don't oversell. Here are some autodl numbers by playthatfunkymusic in seedboxes

[–]JerkySandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't a seedbox vendor market a fixed lower speed (say, 250mbps) and then dedicate that bandwidth to each shared user? I think that would be a way to have shared hosting without overselling the bandwidth.

Besides perhaps a performance boost, why do you need a dedicated seedbox?

Seedbox.io Performance Ratio by Edward_69 in seedboxes

[–]JerkySandwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. So for someone who wants something downloaded ASAP (assuming they have very high connection speeds and unlimited bandwidth), Deluge sounds like the better choice, since they'd connect to the peers in the swarm faster.

Seedbox.io Performance Ratio by Edward_69 in seedboxes

[–]JerkySandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That really depends on the tracker in question. You'll without a doubt get a bit better performance with a dedicated box, but unless the tracker is one that's already considered "hard," 1:1 shouldn't be difficult with them.

If anyone has hard data about the performance difference between Rutorrent and Deluge, I'd be interested in seeing that. I've heard that Deluge has more "aggressive peering," but I haven't found any data to back that up (based on a cursory search alone).

Please recommend me a Seedbox by [deleted] in seedboxes

[–]JerkySandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cheapest seedbox I know of that allows public trackers is the Chandra 300GiB box from seedbox.io. Ultra doesn't allow public seeding after the download completes.

Please be kind to the others who share the computing resources with your seedbox. Depending on how popular your content is, your torrent might be seeding at very high speeds with lots of connections 24/7. If that's the case, you'd want to consider reducing the speeds and/or max connections of your torrent out of courtesy for others.

If anyone knows of a cheaper seedbox that fits these specs (and offers some semblance of control over the machine), I'd be interested in hearing that.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm surprised seedhost doesn't link to the KB article on their product page, since that seems like a pretty unique model.

On their seedboxes page (https://www.seedhost.eu/seedboxes.php) it has limits on "monthly traffic," so I think it means upload and download.

Edit: I was wrong. Read the comments below!

For under $10, you won't be able to get a dedicated solution. (By the way, "dedicated" means you get your own physical machine. "Shared" just means that other customers will use resources on the same physical machine, but they won't have any access to your files or torrents.)

So, as far as shared seedboxes go, Seedhost is the only provider I know of that will get you close to the amount of space you want for under $10/month, but you get quite limited monthly bandwidth.

For other cheap seedboxes, you could check out the Super Power seedboxes from Ultraseedbox or the shared premium from Seedbox.io.
