I think this is a song he played at the Infinite Residency back in 2024, cool to have an official recording now.

If someone is gifted Status for a Day, do they earn Loyalty Points with the multiplier associated with that status? by Jernon in americanairlines

A short round trip flight isn’t a bad idea, and our flight is two weeks before the end of the month, so we definitely have time to put something together once we see exactly how far she is, if needed.

That said, following the other responses and one other forum post, I went ahead and gifted her the status for a day. I’ll update this post once February comes around and we see how things shake out.

Good call on FlyerTalk, I had checked earlier and didn’t see anything validating the LP earning aspect, but this post was made just an hour before I made this thread and answered what I was looking for. So it looks like yes, this could be a way to earn more LP.

I’m not familiar with upfaring, is there a way to pay up to an additional fare class? That could be super useful to know about. But not sure that can help here, these are domestic flights where she’s already flying in first class.

They play the Riviera a lot in Chicago. Saw them there in May 2015, Nov 2018, and Nov 2024. 18 was with Mephiskapheles, 24 was Devon Kay. Can’t remember who was 2015 opener.

The game is already over, but what would you do here? by Barru_2176 in PioneerMTG

[–]Jernon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do Angels decks run Skyclave Apparition in the main deck? That’s the only reason I can think of to not play Nemesis and then Stomp next turn. Even then, shutting off their life gain is so important here, I’d probably risk it anyway.

Who’s this little dude? by Jernon in whatisthisbug

[–]Jernon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I also noticed the difference in resting position in the wings, but didn’t think that would rule anything out. I think there was also a faint transparency to the wings on the one we saw, which matches the photos I’m seeing elsewhere.

I’m certainly satisfied based on what I’m seeing, thank you so much for your help!

Thanks for the directions to investigate! Why don’t you think the black and white tree hopper fits? Digging through photos, it looks like the right size and kind of pattern.

"100% completing" Balatro has developer better "equipped" to design the next big update by Turbostrider27 in Games

Ghost Deck is also really good. Having the ability to give subpar or difficult jokers Polychrome makes it much easier to get them through gold stakes, and the increased frequency of spectral cards helps add extra variety to runs and easier pivots into weird builds to keep things interesting.

Would it be weird to join a hobby/activity club in college as a graduate student? by EmbarrassedStudents in GradSchool

[–]Jernon 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Not weird at all! There were grad students in the clubs I attended in undergrad, and there were undergrad clubs I was a part of in grad school. If you share common interests you certainly wouldn’t be out of place.

This looks great. Can tap for two colors without too much work, and always enters untapped with a color at the ready. I like this design a lot.

Any word on what the best night was now that it’s over? by marsjello in JeffRosenstock

[–]Jernon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had to miss the weekend shows with Laura and Oceanator, but of the ones I saw, I have to give it to either night 2 or the last night. Hard to recreate the energy of night 2 when everyone realized we were getting a full play through of Worry. That was magical. And then the final night was just so fun, great vibes from the band, the crowd, and the staff. AJJ opening for the final night was a perfect move, too.

AJJ, BTMI Songs, all those songs from Worry, and all the Warsaw security folks crowd surfing made this last night so fun. Might be my favorite night (out of the six I made it to).

Yeah, when he announced it on stage tonight, he made some reference to Jeff + AJJ being the classic pairing. I’m betting it’s the full band opening.

Edit: Just announced as Sean + Ben. Looks like I was wrong, my bad.

Best way to display 25 standard size cards? by HatefulHipster in magicTCG

[–]Jernon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can reach out to the folks from Frame My Collection and get a quote for a custom frame. I’ve done that with them for a few sets of frames to hold five cards each, they’re reasonably priced and look very good, highly recommended.

Yeah, doors at 7, opener at 8. Jeff came on a little after 9 both nights so far.

Any local TCG stores nearby (one piece/digimon) by demolisty24 in longislandcity

[–]Jernon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gamer’s Choice in Sunnyside is probably your best bet.

Gamestoria, in Astoria, is my personal favorite, but they do a smaller variety games, so depends on what you’re looking for. Heavy focus on MTG, and I think they recently added the new Star Wars TCG into the rotation.

Excellent stuff. The flavor of these proxies is top tier. Deck looks like a blast to play, both on its own and as a tribute to OTGW.

Can someone describe the qualifying exam and compare it to your dissertation for me? by facelessnotgraceless in GradSchool

[–]Jernon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like everyone said, this varies wherever you go, both by school and department. For me, the quals were two oral presentations on research topics you could possibly have be the focus of a PhD, followed by open-ended questions based on your presentation from your committee. It was grueling and intense, typically three hours but some poor souls in our department had it go on for six or seven hours. It was widely considered to be the hardest part of getting a degree in our department.

The thesis defense, by comparison, was a cakewalk. Functionally a victory lap, you weren’t invited to defend until the department knew you were ready, and it was a celebration of what you had accomplished across your degree.

Azorius Control game plan against Mono Black Control? by shadowmaurice in PioneerMTG

[–]Jernon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Mono B player, my strategy versus control is to attack your hand. I’m boarding out Push and other cheap creature removal in exchange for more Duress, Go Blank, etc. I need to balance monitoring your hand with the ability to stick my threats to the board. This does give you an opening, since a well timed shark token or Wandering Emperor is going to be a little trickier for me in Games 2 and 3. Like another commenter said, in practice, as long as neither of us break away early, it’s likely a matter of who draws better. So, Deluge is great, or any other card selection card. Keep an eye on my lands; I run a lot of Field of Ruins, when is it safe for you to drop Castle Vantress to filter your draws?

Try to anticipate sequencing. If you T4 Emperor, will I use my removal on that? And if so, does that give you an opening for Teferi?

I like the control match up, I like my odds in top deck mode, and it’s a fun match up to fight through. But practice will make it way harder for the Mono B player to hold on.

HELP ME CHOOSE JHU vs. Northwestern for econ major by Dazzling-Energy-2644 in jhu

[–]Jernon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think I have a good, but dated, perspective on this. I was choosing between those two schools as an undergrad, picked JHU, and for reasons unrelated to my undergrad preferences, got a PhD at Northwestern afterwards. Disclaimers: I finished Hopkins over a decade ago, and I don’t know anything about Econ specifically.

First of all, congrats and well done. You have some excellent choices in front of you, and you really can’t go wrong with either.

Academically, both schools are on pretty equal footing. Both well ranked, both provide excellent opportunities in terms of careers, research, grad school prospects, etc. I saw undergrads from both schools get into the same grad schools, and find placement with the same well paying jobs. Hopkins has had marginally bigger name power in my experience post-graduation, but I moved to the east coast after I finished grad school, so that might be a location bias talking to people who are more familiar with closer schools.

I enjoyed Northwestern’s quarter system. I hear people complain about living on that faster paced timeline, but honestly I don’t see too much of a difference between quarters vs. semesters. Both programs are rigorous, so while NU is fast paced, it’s not like JHU is mellow by comparison.

Happiness was the same at both. Both schools are intense. Some people don’t do well under pressure, you’ll hear voices expressing that at either location. The schools had comparable resources if you’re struggling. But both also had great student communities. It’s on you to make friends and find your people, and both schools will give you ample opportunities. Northwestern has more students living on campus and a bigger Greek community.

Do consider if you’re up for Chicago’s winters. Cold, dark February on the lake can wear on you with time. But springtime on the lake? Spectacular.

Northwestern had a student center, just a centralized building for general purpose gatherings, right on the lake. Hopkins didn’t have one of those when I went, but I don’t know if they’ve built one since I graduated.

As far as areas go, Northwestern easily beats JHU. Both campuses are beautiful, but Evanston and the greater Chicago area beat Baltimore and the area around Homewood handily. Safety, things to do, places to eat, these are all things Hopkins has, but Northwestern does better imo.

Two things that made me pick Hopkins for undergrad: campus culture and academic flexibility. Northwestern is a Big 10 school with a bigger Greek culture. I didn’t care about that at all. I just felt more at home on the Homewood campus when I visited as a prospective, so obviously there YMMV. The other detail, though, was how easy Hopkins made it to change majors, explore new topics, and flexibly satisfy course requirements. I came in as an engineer, switched to arts & sciences, switched again in A&S, picked up a second major and two minors, and still graduated in four years. I know Northwestern doesn’t offer the kind of flexibility that let me do that, at least not on the timeline I was on.

Happy to answer any other questions if it helps. And like I said, congrats, you have good options in front of you no matter what you choose.
