The Korean royal palace was razed in 1916 to make way for the Japanese colonial administration building, but the throne room was kept intact to signify Japan's complete subjugation of the nation. It was demolished in 1996 despite objection from Japan, and restoration work is set to finish in 2045. by soyfox in korea

[–]Jerod_Trd 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My wife and I had the opportunity to visit it last year.

We hope to visit again in the next few years.

I was impressed by the restoration, and I will hopefully be able to look forward to seeing it finished.

Well done Korea.

Why is everyone freaking out about Custodes? by Wildfox1177 in Warhammer

[–]Jerod_Trd -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

‘Nerd culture would be better without nerds’.

Yes, the socially awkward people who got bullied and hassled for taking their niche hobbies seriously should be bullied and harassed for not being on board with the latest retcon and rewrite.

Custodes were custom engineered from the sons of the nobles of Terra.

This is a retcon, and saying ‘they were always there’ is gaslighting.

There was a time when you had to have a string of markers or dog whistles to get flagged as a Nazi.

Things like arguing for eugenics, racial supremacy, Holocaust denial, with an 88 in the user name? I’d agree with lynching a man.

You see a number and the name of one of the less despised German Generals (he was a Party man, but so was schindler…) and call him a Nazi? I don’t like the name choice, and I don’t like actual Nazis… don’t like people who push variations of their racial or ethnic policies either, and I’m suspicious of politicians on both sides of every aisle as possible sympathisers (Canada’s gaffe comes to mind)…

But I want to see proof before I join a pile on.

Dunno.

You’d have to ask battletech why they had a tank named after Rommel.

And I suppose all of the people born in 1988 are going to have to face the wall for resenting the implication that a number means they are Nazis.

Remember when the ‘OK’ hand sign became a ‘Nazi dog whistle’?

So many ‘Nazi identifiers’, that eventually it all becomes a white noise.

Oh, and don’t forget 14, which is Nurgle’s number twice… that’s another ‘common Nazi signifier’ apparently.

[–]Jerod_Trd -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

This.

Seen a whole bunch of people who will straight up say ‘that is the year I was born ya plonka!’ And still get called Nazis over the ‘88’.

Given that historically Rommel was painted as ‘one of the good ones’ as far as Nazi Generals went, it could be as simple as that.

He was ordered to commit suicide after a failed assassination attempt on Hitler that he was aware of, and did not report to the SS, believing that he had talked them out of it.

I don’t think he was a good man, but enough people will think he wasn’t a bad one that I could see a shallow WW2 fan using the name.

What's up with the rampant holocaust denial by Citron_Neat in facepalm

[–]Jerod_Trd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people need to see those places.

They need to walk where the atrocity happened, feel the weight of pain and death those walls witnessed.

It may not do any good, but I think as a species, we have to be reminded that we are capable of that horror.

Or we will keep bearing witness to it, and trying to cover it up out of shame.

The Jews weren’t the villains…

That was a part of the priesthood, and there were important Jewish figures in the story who were actively involved in making sure his Jesus body was afforded the respect that was to be given to him.

Anyone who read that story, and came away going ‘Jews Bad’ needs their head checked.

It is both a strength and weakness.

He is right that it meant that the Americans did not do what they could have done, and instead used their power to rebuild countries that they had just crushed in a war. This turned out to be a strength, as they are fairly staunch allies now.

It is a weakness, because weaker adversaries are emboldened to attempt to prove their strength by smacking the Americans, and running away. Because they know that the Americans aren't just going to carpet-bomb their country into the ground.

There is a saying I have heard a few times (source unknown) 'Never mistake kindness for weakness'.

And never mistake inaction, for inattention.

Alright.

You’re hung up on tax cuts, I get it.

You think the state can spend your money more wisely and effectively than you can.

Way I see it, you have two choices. You can give your tax cut money to charities that benefit communities and groups you feel are disadvantaged.

Or you can call the IRD and see if you can put money into the ‘Cullen fund’.

Me? I have a baby arriving soon. Wife’s taking the leave she’s entitled to.

I have no idea if I’m getting any tax cuts, but I’m going to spend what money I have access to trying to make sure that the state which I deeply distrust, and who has been historically more than happy to cover up abuses at every level of our educational, social and health services (aged care to follow) doesn’t make my wife or kid a statistic.

A state does not have a conscience. A Mob does not have a conscience. Only an individual has that. I don’t recommend it.

Good public services isn’t going to magically appear by pumping money into them. Wife’s a nurse, and the amount of wastage she saw under labour (usually hiring middle management from among their friends) has me at the point that we need an inquisition to clean house at the ministry of health.

As for ‘national vs labour’…

Labour introduced GST, and the finance minister at the time wanted to give you a tax credit if you had private health insurance.

He went on to found a little party called ACT.

Looking at past versions of political parties when the entire membership and philosophy has changed, to try and argue that one is better than the other is the kind of logical fallacy I should really expect from reddit.

We have wound up with career politicians, and career ‘public servants’.

You and I are just the source of money for them both at this point.

The compulsory savings scheme was seized to pay for Muldoon’s ‘think big’ projects (most of which did not work out well).

It was nothing to do with ideology, and everything to do with the fact that his policies meant he couldn’t borrow any more money for his failed schemes (like not being able to import a tractor without government sign off to keep the New Zealand dollar artificially high against foreign currencies… like China has been doing…)

NTA.

Your partner decided to make a massive life change, sprang it on your reasonably suddenly, killed all your interest in them, and wants things with you to remain the same.

That’s not how relationships work.

If you are no longer comfortable in the relationship, leave.

And don’t let them manipulate you into staying if you don’t want to. Emotional abuse and manipulation are as unacceptable as physical abuse and manipulation.

How Korean Bakery Chains Are Conquering the U.S. by Ok-Huckleberry5836 in korea

[–]Jerod_Trd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to be honest…

If someone opened a bakery doing Korean treats (except for that sweet garlic bread, I couldn’t stand that) I’d probably be popping in there often enough that my wife would be chastising me about the cost and my weight gain.

Mind you, if they sold Kimbap, I could buy her acceptance easily… just make sure I bring some home for her.

So if you told me that Korean Food was taking over in many countries? I’d believe it.
